UBT89X Design visualisation Unit reference number: Y/507/5516 Level: 3 Guided Learning (GL) hours: 25 Overview This unit will enable Learners to understand how to plan design and evaluate design plans for make-up projects. Learners will know where to research themes for ideas and create an action plan and mood board detailing all their ideas for the total look. Learners will have an understanding of why creating a design plan is important to developing the final look and how it is effective in evaluation. Learning outcomes On completion of this unit, learners will: LO1 Understand how to plan for a make-up project LO2 Understand how to develop a design plan for a make-up project LO3 Understand how to evaluate the design plan for a make-up project Version 6 1

Assessment requirements Learners must complete the assessment requirements related to this unit. Learners must produce a portfolio of evidence which contains assessed evidence covering all the assessment criteria in this unit. 2

Unit content LO1 Understand how to plan for a make-up project Identify the research techniques involved when creating a design plan for a visual make-up project: Event an understanding of the types of events that require design planning and the differences and individual requirements of each photographic, character, performance, completion work, show or catwalk Ideas and design displayed on a mood board to show design processes and development of final design Drawings use of face drawings and sketches to support the design process and create total look for the photographic make-up Research tools magazines, internet, specialist trade magazines, specialist trade events and exhibitions, museums, music videos, television shows, films, art galleries, historical research, theatre, musicals, fashion Describe the purpose of a mood board: Mood board a vivid description or representation of an overall look. A mood board is described as a visual communication method for a target audience. It helps set the scene and share the concept. A good visual aid used to share thoughts, influences and concepts for a project. A pictorial point of reference during the creation of your total look, for continuity and consistency State how to develop a mood board: Mood board is an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to provide an overall feel or flow to illustrate your thinking about your theme and document your research and influences Create a mood board displaying your ideas including: theme, images, text describing the reasons for your choice and your inspiration, material swatches, make-up ideas and accessories Tools pictures, magazines, photographs, books, board, glue, scissors, drawing pencils, internet, material swatches Describe the purpose of action planning: Ensure you keep to a timed schedule and do not miss any vital parts out of your planned image. It helps plan the order you wish to work in to create your image in an organised manner Choose a theme for the design, e.g. plants, fantasy animals, seasonal events, avantgarde wedding or national holidays Identify the types of information captured on an action plan: Key points to an action plan - What actions will take place - Who will carry out the actions yourself or your model - When it will take place, and for how long - What resources are needed - Communication who should know what 3

Identify budget constraints when design planning for a make-up project: Resources required for creating total look Flexibility and creativity used to decrease costs Additional props and accessories to support the total look Adaptable approach when changes are required to meet demands Importance of setting and working to a given budget 4

LO2 Understand how to develop a design plan for a make-up project State the importance of developing design plans: Ensure you keep to a timed schedule and that you do not miss out any vital parts of your planned image. It helps to plan the order you wish to work in to create your image in an organised manner. How a design plan will help track and illustrate - Changes made to design upon feedback from employer, client, photographer and stylists - Changes made to suit location of work on set, studios, out on location - Changes made to suit client needs skin type, tone and condition, sensitivity test results Describe the impact of lighting on design plans: Lighting - Used by photographers to enhance overall look for final prints - Used for filming - Used for stage and catwalk shows Black and white pick neutral colours for eyes and bold for lips so contrast shows Contouring may need to be applied (up to 4 shades darker) so it is visible in pictures Flash avoid too much light reflecting concealers around the eyes, if using bold colours be generous as flash can wash out colours; too high a shine on nail enamel can throw back a flash Concealing and correcting take more care to cover under eye circles and any redness as this is more visible in pictures. Uneven skin surface should be built up with layers of concealer to ensure smooth surface is visible in pictures Time of day morning light (softer tones as make-up will appear darker) afternoon light (best light for make-up, tones will appear more golden) evening light (allows for more dramatic colour choices) Studio lighting various different studio lights: soft focus, white light, fluorescent etc will all have an impact on the requirements of the products applied. In some cases the lighting can produce more heat in the environment; therefore touch-ups may be more frequent Products with too much reflection or shimmer are unsuitable for photographic work due to their light-reflecting qualities 5

LO3 Understand how to evaluate the design plan for a make-up project Describe how to evaluate design plans: Personal reflection strengths and weaknesses of the whole process for photographic make-up service, create personal action plan and identify areas of improvement, SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) Responding to feedback comments from all team involved with photographic make-up photographer, make-up designer, hair designer, clients, stylists, nail technicians Use of test shot to help assess levels of lighting, make-up depth and colour Explain the methods of presenting design plans to a range of audiences: Methods mood boards, design sketches, ICT programmes and software, portfolios Audiences potential employers, designers, photographers 6

Assessment criteria In order to pass this unit, learners must achieve all pass criteria. The pass criteria relate to the proficient demonstration of skills and knowledge. Learning outcome The learner must: Pass The learner can: LO1 Understand how to plan for a make-up project P1 Identify the research techniques involved when creating a design plan for a visual make-up project P2 Describe the purpose of a mood board P3 State how to develop a mood board P4 Describe the purpose of action planning P5 Identify the types of information captured on an action plan P6 Identify budget constraints when design planning for a make-up project LO2 Understand how to develop a design plan for a make-up project LO3 Understand how to evaluate the design plan for a make-up project P7 State the importance of developing design plans P8 Describe the impact of lighting on design plans P9 Describe how to evaluate design plans P10 Explain the methods of presenting design plans to a range of audiences 7

Resources The special resources required for this unit are access to a real or realistic working environment which supports the provision of photographic, theatrical and media make-up applications. The learner will need full access to tools and equipment to produce mood boards in a variety of formats. Delivery guidance Teachers are encouraged to use innovative, practical and engaging delivery methods to enhance the learning experience. Learners may benefit from: Work experience within a commercial photographer s or in a studio so they can practise to hone their skills in a real environment Using interactive information and technology, systems and hardware so they can learn about concepts and theories, research current trends, research product knowledge and produce visual aids including virtual mood boards Links with other units This unit is closely linked with the following units: UBT126M Media make-up The media make-up unit will provide learners with access to subject matter where they will be able practically to apply the theories and skills covered within the design visualisation unit.
