JOINT CSIR-UGC NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST (NET) FOR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AND ELIGIBILITY FOR LECTURESHIP (SCIENCE) The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research holds the CSIR-UGC (NET) normally twice every year, in June and in December. This Examination is held to determine the eligibility of Indian National candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and for appointment of Lecturers in Science subjects (LS) in Indian Universities and Colleges. A candidate may apply either for both JRF and Lectureship or for Lectureship (LS) only. All details about the test and the actual dates are published in the Employment News and in the CSIR website http://www.csirhrdg.res.in usually in February and August. Candidates intending to appear should, therefore, watch out for these announcements. STATE LEVEL ELIGIBILITY TESTS (SLET) Various States accredited by the UGC also periodically conduct State Level Eligibility Tests (SLET). The examination pattern and the syllabi of NET and SLET examinations are reported to be the same. Although our course material is primarily designed for the CSIR/UGC/NET, it will provide adequate support for the SLETs as well. Value of Fellowship Candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (NET) will be eligible to receive fellowships either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignments or from the Schemes with which they may find association. The value of the fellowship at present is Rs.12,000/- and Rs. 14,000/- per month for JRF & SRF respectively. It will be governed by the terms and conditions of CSIR, UGC or the Research Schemes as applicable. SC/ST applicants will be given such special consideration as may be decided by the Co-ordination Committee as per policy guidelines. 1

Eligibility (i) (ii) Candidates who have scored at least 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST) in the Master s Degree Examination in the following or related subjects are eligible to appear in the joint CSIR-UGC Test (NET). Name Chemical Sciences 1 Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences 2 Life Sciences 3 Mathematical Sciences 4 Physical Sciences 5 Subject Code A candidate who will appear or has appeared in the final year of M.Sc./Equivalent Examination can also apply for the Test under RAC (Result Awaited) Category. Such candidates will be considered eligible for JRF/LS only if they are able to produce the proof of having passed the Master's Degree Examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame. Age Limit The age limits for admission to the Test are: (a) For Junior Research Fellowship (NET) - minimum 19 years and maximum 28 years as on 1st July/1st January for the December/ June Examination respectively of the year of Examination, relaxable by upto 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, physically handicapped, visually handicapped and female applicants. (b) For Lectureship (NET) - Minimum 19 years as on 1st July/ 1st January for the December/June Examination respectively of the year of examination and no upper age limit. 2

SCHEME OF TEST From June 2011 the CSIR-UGC NET exam will consist of a single paper of three hours' duration, carrying a maximum of 200 marks. The Question Paper will be divided into three parts, comprising only of multiple choice questions. Part A: Shall be common to all subjects. This part shall be a test containing a maximum of 20 questions of General Science and Research Aptitude with emphasis on logical reasoning, graphical analysis, analytical and numerical ability, quantitative comparison, series formation, puzzles etc., The candidates shall be required to answer any 15 questions, of two marks each. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 30 out of 200. Part B: Shall contain subject related multiple choice questions (MCQs), with total marks of 70 or 75 out of 200. The maximum number of questions contained and to be attempted shall be in the range of 25 35, as listed below: 1. Chemical Sciences: Total of 50 MCQs of 2 marks each. To be attempted: any 35. Total Marks 70. 2. Life Sciences: Total of 50 MCQs of 2 marks each. To be attempted: any 35. Total Marks 70. 3. Mathematical Sciences: Total of 40 MCQs of 3 marks each. To be attempted: any 25. Total Marks 75. 4. Physical Sciences: Total of 25 MCQs of 3.5 marks each. To be attempted: any 20. Total Marks 70. Part C: This Part shall contain a number of questions that are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of scientific concepts. The questions shall be of an analytical nature where 3

Physical Sciences** 30 20 5 100 a candidate is expected to apply scientific knowledge to arrive at the solution to the given scientific problem. * Mathematical Sciences: The questions in this Part shall have multiple correct options. Credit to a question will be given only on identification of ALL the correct options. No Credit will be given if any incorrect option is marked as a correct answer. No Partial Credit is allowed. ** Physical Sciences: This Part shall contain 25 Questions from Part B (advanced) of the syllabus. There will be 10 compulsory questions. Out of the remaining 15 questions, a candidate will be required to answer any 10. The question paper will appear in English, with the Hindi version also available.the actual number of questions in each part and section to be asked and attempted may vary from exam to exam. The detailed syllabi are usually published in the Information Bulletin and Application Form published by CSIR as well as on the CSIR website, about 3 to 4 months in advance of the Test. 4

Examination Centres The Test is normally held at the following 26 Centres in the country: Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guwahati, Guntur, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Pilani, Pune, Raipur, Roorkee, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi. If a sufficient number of candidates do not opt for a particular Centre, that Centre will be deleted from the list and the concerned candidates will be allotted another Centre nearest to their place of residence, at the discretion of the CSIR. Information Bulletion, Application Form and Examination Fee. The Information Bulletion and Application Form (inclusive of the fee payable) can be obtained through the motified leraches of Indian Bank on payment of cash as follows: 1. General Category - Rs. 400/- 2. Other Backward Classes (OBC) - Rs. 200/- 3. SC/ST/Physically or Visually Handicapped - Rs. 100/- They can also be obtained through post from the Indian Bank, 3/1, west patel Nagar, New Delhi 110 008 (Ph:011-2588 8257) by sending a crossed Demand Draft for Rs.475/-; Rs.275/- or Rs.175/- as applicable (Inclusive of Rs.75/- as postal of handling charges). For this purpose, the candidate should send a request to the Bank with two address slips clearly mentioning the address to which he/she desires the bulletion and the form to be sent. 5

The candidate is advised i) to post the Application Form, by ordinary post, well in advance of the last date ii) to retain a photo copy of the filled in Application Form, and photographs iii) to check the website of UGC for the list of candidates, about one month in advance of the examination iv) to take appropriate action to obtain a valid Admission Certificate, in case of non-receipt of the Application Form Acknowledgment Card with requisite postage stamp affixed. Course Material Our study materials for the CSIR-UGC (NET) Examination follow in detail the latest syllabi announced by CSIR for the UGC-NET. If there is a change in syllabus thereafter, our material will be suitably supplemented as far as practicable. The material is divided into 8 sets: SET 1 SETS 2 to 8 General Science and Research Aptitude for PART A OF THE QUESTION PAPER Subject Material for PARTS B & C OF THE QUESTION PAPER The materials have been prepared by experts in their respective fields and contain theory, illustrative examples, worked out problems and questions to the extent needed. MODEL TEST PAPERS A Few Model Test Papers with answers, patterned on the actual Test Papers, will be sent during the course. In addition, The Model Question Paper published by CSIR-UGC will be provided with answers/solutions. 7

Students should answer these Test Papers on their own, strictly under examination conditions, without referring to the answers given or to books or study materials. This will give them valuable practice for facing the final Test with confidence. Doubt Letter Scheme Our professors services are readily available to clear doubts that students may have while studying our course material and problems. Students are welcome to send us, their doubts, in writing, up to two months before the exam. Problems must be restricted to 5 per letter and be within the examination syllabus. The Source from which the problems have been taken MUST BE SPECIFIED and student s working sheets enclosed with the problems being referred to us. Doubt Letters which do not meet these specific conditions will not be attended to Note: In order to facilitate and speed up processing, please write ATTN: DOUBT LETTER: CSIR UGC clearly on the cover of the Doubt Letter. The student s name and the Enrolment Number must also be given. Please DO NOT combine Doubt Letters with other types of correspondence. Medium of Instruction The course material is in the English medium and only students who can follow our lessons in the English medium should apply for enrolment. Despatch of Study Material Despatch will begin in February 2015/August 2015 for the June 2015/ December 2015 exams respectively. Subsequent sets will be sent in approximate monthly intervals. Material is normally sent by post or private courier services Late Enrolment For those who enrol late, all the study materials already despatched will be sent in one lot and the remaining sets on a monthly basis. 8

Enrolment Students are advised to enrol early so that they have adequate time for study and revision of the course material. Our material and services will be available only for the particular exam for which the student is enrolled with us. Fees The fee for this Course is Rs.11,070/- + Service Tax Rs.1549.80/-. Total Rs.12,619.80/-, payable in full upon enrolment. Fees once paid will not be refunded or adjusted under any circumstances Procedure for Enrolment The Student should send us: 1. The completed Enrolment Form with a passport size photograph affixed to the Enrolment Form in the allotted space. 2. Two additional signed copies of the photograph. 3. Payment can be made by: a. All communication for the course will be sent to our students by email. REQUESTS FOR CHANGE OF ADDRESS ETC. Normally we do not accept any advice for stoppage of despatch of study material. Change of address, or, in exceptional cases, stoppage or resumption of despatch etc. will be implemented only if requested by a letter signed by the student. A photocopy of the Admit Card (with the photograph visible) must be enclosed with the letter. Telephone requests will not be honoured unless confirmed in writing. This policy is designed to prevent fraud and to safeguard the interests of our genuine students. Please allow 15 days from the date of receipt, for implementation of the change. All matters are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in Chennai only.
