California Migrant Education Portal Quick Start Guide Creating and Using Your Account Step 1: Sign up for a free account at www.calmigranted.org Click the Get an Account Link Complete the information as appropriate. Click Continue to proceed. After completing the steps above, you will use your Login ID and Password to login. You ll also receive a confirmation e-mail Message. Step 2: Login to the California Migrant Education Portal Enter your Login ID and Password and click Log In If needed, you may click the Forgot Password link to reset your password. Step 3: Review Your Homeroom & Resources After Logging in, you will see your personal Homeroom which contains featured modules as well as quick links to announcements, events, webliography, discussions, lesson plans, and more. Here s where you can edit your profile and upload a photo of yourself. After reviewing your Homeroom, click edit to edit your profile and add information about yourself. 1

Step 4: Edit Your Profile Access Your Profile: Click on the edit link from the Homeroom to modify your profile. You can Change Your Personal Information such as your address, organization, job title, biography, grades, subjects, and photo. Your profile is your online identity in the Migrant Education Portal community it provides a way for others to learn more about you and connect if they share similar interests. To upload a picture, go to the bottom of the Edit Profile page and locate your image by selecting the Browse button. You can select any saved image accessible to you from your computer. Remember to select Save Changes at the bottom of the page to save any changes made to the page. Step 5: Resource Modules Professional development content Modules appear on the Homeroom and provide video examples of researchbased, effective instructional effective strategies in K-12 classrooms, algebra readiness, and includes English and Spanish videos for parents and preschool educators. Click on a module to access the available resources 2

Step 5: Module Overview Each module begins with an Overview page that provides a brief description of the module, prerequisites, objectives, description of how to take the module and an estimate of the module duration. (Also notice how the Module tab is highlighted as an additional way to access the modules.) After reviewing the overview, select the Begin the Module button to view the first page. Page indicators identify the pages of the module and provides access to individual pages throughout the module. Step 6: Module Navigation Navigating the pages of each module is easy with information available on each page to help you know where you are and where you may want to go. Printing allows you to print individual or multiple pages for review or distribution. Next and Previous links on each page provide access to the next page or the previous page of the module. Unit Map provides access to individual pages throughout the module. Click on a link or a folder to show more pages of the module. 3

Step 7: Viewing Video Clips Each of the grade level (K-1, 2-3, etc.) and Algebra Readiness modules have video clips highlighting specific teaching strategies or examples for supporting language development or language literacy. Click on the small image thumbnail to view the video clips. A new window will open to display the video clip. On the left side of the video is a transcript in English. Below the video you can move the playhead to access a specific part of video. In the Pre-K and Parents modules, the video plays on each page of the module. The video will automatically load onto the page for viewing. 4

Step 8: Tools Overview Tools on the Migrant Education Portal allow you to create and share resources with individuals and groups. Tools include: Lesson Plan Builder helps you design and publish standardsaligned lessons aligned to California's content standards and English Language Development standards. Webliography is a database of Web sites submitted by California Migrant Education Portal educators. You can also keep your own bookmarks of websites for easy access. Document Sharing provides shared files, images, Powerpoint presentations, etc. Change Password allows you to change your password. Calendar provides access to the events listings. Step 9: Lesson Plan Builder Create lessons that can be saved for you alone or shared with individuals, groups or all of the California Migrant Education Portal community. Lesson plans that have been shared with you and/or your group. To create a lesson plan, select the Lesson Plan Builder button. Lesson plans that have been shared with all of the California Migrant Education Portal community appear in subject area and grade level categories. 5

Step 10: Webliography Favorite websites can be saved for you alone or shared with individuals, groups or all of the California Migrant Education Portal community. Websites that have been shared with you and/or your group. To add a website, select the add new entry button. Step 11: Document Sharing Files can be saved for you alone or shared with individuals, groups or all of the California Migrant Education Portal community. Files that have been shared with you and/or your group. To upload a file, select the add new entry button. Step 12: Communication Tools Communication tools provide opportunities for dialogue and communication with others in the California Migrant Education Portal community. These include: Discussion Forums to share ideas and collaborate with others, Email to send messages to individuals users or users in a group, Contact Info to find other users in the community, Who s Online to see who is currently on the California Migrant Education Portal, Contact Us to provide feedback to the operators of the California Migrant Education Portal, Announcements to receive information about important events or resources. Step 13: Discussion Forums Discussion Forums connect you with colleagues in conversations on topics to support your professional practice. Create a New Topic in a Discussion Forum by selecting the New Topic button. The list of available Forums appears on the Discussion Forums page. You can post new topics in any of the Forums available to you. 7
