About the Workshop Incoming Chief and Senior Residents in all specialties throughout Southeast, Central, and West Michigan are invited to attend this popular one-day workshop. This workshop provides residents the opportunity to enhance their management, communication, and leadership skills through comprehensive discussions about leadership style, constructive feedback, and problem resolution. Residents will become familiar with their own personal behavior style, explore behavior styles of others, and learn effective methods of behavior management. In addition, there will be a panel comprised of acting Chief Residents to answer questions, provide insight, and discuss present day work life issues. This highly interactive workshop is led by nationally renowned speaker Hershey Bell, MD, MS (Medical Education), FAAFP. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will walk away with practical applications and strategies necessary to fulfill their new roles as Chief and Senior Medical Residents. Faculty ALFRED E. BAYLOR, III, MD Dr. Alfred Eugene Baylor, III, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Wayne State University. He is also a general surgeon and attending staff physician for the Detroit Medical Center with special interest in trauma and critical care. Additionally, he is the Director of the Hyperbaric unit. Dr. Baylor received his baccalaureate from Hampton University in 1991. He subsequently received his medical doctor (MD) degree from Georgetown University in 1998. Dr. Baylor completed his internship and residency at Wayne State University. He was also an NIH trauma research fellow. Dr. Baylor successfully completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program in June 2015. He is a member of several local and national medical associations/societies, and has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed publications in medical journals. Dr. Baylor has participated in many community outreach programs for youth and men/women s health and has been actively involved with the U.S. Army National Guard/Reserve as a Major since 1988. HERSHEY S. BELL, MD, MS, FAAFP Dr. Hershey Bell is an internationally recognized speaker, an esteemed educator, and published author of medical literature. Dr. Bell has been involved with medical education for over three decades. Dr. Bell completed family medicine residency education at the University of Toronto and Duke University and achieved board certification in family medicine in Canada and the United States. Following residency, he served as a Duke University National Faculty Development Fellow. Dr. Bell has earned the distinction of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a recipient of the John and Silvia Ferretti Distinguished Teaching Award at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), and of the Miller Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Osteopathic Medical Profession. Throughout his career, Dr. Bell has served in many positions, including Family Practice Residency Director at Hunterdon Medical Center in New Jersey, Division Chief and Vice-Chair of Family Medicine at Duke University, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, and Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Evaluation at the College of Medicine at LECOM in Erie, PA. Currently, Dr. Bell is Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor of Family Medicine and Professor of Pharmacy Practice at LECOM. In addition to his career achievements, Dr. Bell has made contributions to medical literature including articles on competency-based education, doctor-patient relationship issues and general considerations surrounding medical education, as well as serving as part of the team that developed the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Outcome Competencies. Most recently, Dr. Bell has developed a new workshop entitled, The Power of Empathy: Maximizing Our Healing Influence with Patients. He is working on a book tentatively titled, When Life Is On the Line: Facts, Wisdom and Stories for New and Experienced Health Professions Educators.
Faculty HEIDI KROMREI, PHD Dr. Heidi Kromrei is the Associate Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Director of Medical Education for Osteopathic Programs, and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). Dr. Kromrei, along with the DMC DIO, is responsible for monitoring and oversight of the accreditation and educational activities of the DMC s more than 100 residency and fellowship programs as well as the oversight of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Medical Student Education at the DMC. Dr. Kromrei received her doctorate in philosophy from Wayne State University in the Department of Education, division of Administration and Organizational Development. Dr. Kromrei holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Master of Arts in Education from the University of Michigan Dearborn. Dr. Kromrei is an adjunct faculty member at Oakland University and Wayne State University where she teaches courses in Program Evaluation. Prior to entering the field of medical education, Dr. Kromrei spent 14 years working in health and behavior research at the University of Illinois in Chicago, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. STACY PAYNE, MA Stacy, Personal Development Director, is returning by popular demand for her sixth year as a faculty member of the workshop. Stacy is a training professional with more than 15 years of experience in analysis, design, development, project management and facilitation. Stacy s vision, energy, and creativity have contributed to her success in developing client relationships and leading teams. Her facilitation skills enable her to influence, motivate, and promote the importance of personal development and change. Stacy has been certified to administer and interpret several psychological assessments and has experience facilitating courses on many topics including the following: career development, change management, coaching, communications, conflict management, curing negativity, customer service, delegation, diversity, emotional intelligence, empowerment, ethics, facilitation skills, goal setting, influence and persuasion, interviewing, leadership, managing generational differences, mentoring, negotiations, relationship building, situational leadership, strategic thinking, stress management, team development, and work/life balance. Stacy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and earned a Master of Arts degree in guidance and counseling specializing in career and employee development.
