SUMMERFUEL SCHOLARS PROGRAM 2018 Summerfuel Scholars Program: Summerfuel is committed to providing exciting and engaging summer opportunities to a diverse group of high school students each year. We have established the Summerfuel Scholars program, which awards competitive partial scholarships to motivated and accomplished students from across the United States to attend Summerfuel. These scholarship awards are based on merit components such as a student s personal statement, letters of recommendation, extracurricular involvements and grades. The actual award amount will be determined by financial need. Please note that Summerfuel Scholars does not award more than 50% of the program fee in scholarship funds. Eligibility: Summerfuel welcomes any student currently enrolled in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade to apply for this competitive scholarship program. Successful applicants will be independently motivated to apply, have a desire to learn, demonstrated leadership experience in their high school community and beyond, and be in good academic standing (minimum GPA: 3.0). Statements of financial status e.g. school financial aid award letter, recent tax information, other scholarships awarded, special financial circumstances Freuently Asked Questions: What are my chances of being awarded a scholarship? Summerfuel Scholars awards are competitive and, unfortunately, we are not able to award scholarships to all of our applicants. While we encourage you to apply, we ask that you manage expectations. If I am applying for Summerfuel Scholars, should I also apply to Summerfuel online and submit a deposit? Program deposits become non-refundable on April 1st, but we do not mail scholarship awards until April 7th. If you will only be able to attend if you receive a financial award, please do not submit a deposit, as we will not be able to return your deposit after April 1st. If you would still be able to attend without a scholarship award, you should submit a deposit to guarantee a space in the program and desired courses. Please note that you may not receive a scholarship to which you have already applied. Which Summerfuel programs should I apply to? Am I more likely to get an award for certain programs? We know that a Summerfuel summer is a valuable experience for our students regardless of location. Because we have limited scholarship funds available for each program, you may not be awarded funds for your first choice program, even if you are selected as a Scholar. We ask that all students that apply to Summerfuel Scholars rank their top three program choices to help us make Summerfuel a possibility for more applicants. Please only rank programs that you would definitely attend should your financial need be met. Will there still be room in Summerfuel programs in April? While we reserve spaces in our programs for scholarship recipients, we cannot guarantee that there will be room for non-scholarship applicants in April. How much will my scholarship award be? Summerfuel Scholars awards only partial scholarships, generally up to 50% of the program fee. Scholarships and award amounts are determined based on demonstrated merit, financial need and total program fees. Families will be responsible for the remainder of the program fees, less the scholarship award. What costs does this scholarship include? Scholarship awards are applied to the total program fee (including room and board). The refundable security deposit ($300) will be included in the family contribution. All other expenses including travel, travel insurance, optional extras and spending money are not included in the award calculation and are the responsibility of your family. Please consider these additional costs when calculating your family contribution.

By execution of the application and this Agreement, I confirm my awareness and acknowledge the risks of injury, which may be associated with travel, particularly in foreign countries. My child/ward is enthusiastic and prepared, and I believe he/she is capable of handling both the emotional and physical aspects of the program as well as any risks involved. Furthermore, I agree that, should my child/ward s conduct, at the sole discretion of Summerfuel, be deemed to be in violation of Summerfuel rules or otherwise detrimental to the maintenance of standards or to the successful operation of Summerfuel s program, ASA Summerfuel, in its sole discretion, may dismiss him/her from the program. I further agree that Summerfuel shall have no further responsibility for my child/ward upon his/her dismissal from the program, and I understand that such dismissal may occur at a location far from the child/ward s home. I affirm that Summerfuel shall have the exclusive authority to determine the manner and means of transporting my child/ward home without supervision, and that all additional expenses (including but not limited to the entire costs of the transportation) shall be borne completely by me, and that Summerfuel shall have no obligation to provide any refund of the tuition fee with respect to any dismissed student. Notwithstanding the foregoing, in the event Summerfuel elects to send my child/ward home with a supervising Summerfuel representative, all expenses of such Summerfuel representative (including but not limited to the entire costs of the transportation) shall be borne completely by me. Prior to the commencement of the program, I shall sign a credit card authorization to be held by Summerfuel authorizing the payment from my credit card of any such expenses of my child/ward and the Summerfuel representative in the event of the dismissal of my child/ward. Any violation of the rules, terms or conditions, as well as behavior incompatible with the programs, could result in dismissal of a student at parent s/guardian s expense as stated above. I authorize ASA Summerfuel, at its sole discretion, to place my child/ward at my own expense and without any further consent or advance notice in a hospital for medical services and treatment or, if no hospital is readily available, to place my child/ward in the care of a licensed medical doctor for treatment. I hereby grant ASA Summerfuel full authority to take whatever actions it may reasonably consider to be warranted under the circumstances. I have read the payment policy and refund schedule in the How to Apply section of Summerfuel s website and agree to the terms cited.
