Recognising Achievement at Malton School House Points and Congratulatory Referrals These are awarded for good work throughout the year. Commendations On three occasions during the school year teachers are asked to nominate one student in each of their teaching groups who has performed well in respect of the level of attainment they reach, the effort they apply, or the improvement they have made. A commendation letter signed by the Head and Deputy is then presented personally to each student. Privilege Cards Students are invited to apply for privilege cards. Awards are made on the quality of their application. Attendance, effort, house points, commendations, service to school, responsibility, and participation in school life are all taken into consideration. Examinations Success Grades in all subjects taken are aggregated and students are ranked in order of their performance. The top ten students in each year group receive a letter of congratulations on their achievement (the top five in the Sixth Form). Annual Awards To qualify for an award, students either gained three or more commendations, or they finished in the top ten in their year group (top five in Year 12 and 13). A special limited edition of enamel badges is commissioned for the awards, based on the school shield. Even more limited is a badge for students who have received awards in three years. These students also receive a book prize. We welcome 12 other new members of staff: To the teaching staff we welcome Mr Green and Mr Hillier, who join the PE department, Miss Sharman in French, Mrs Wattrus in Art. Mr Marshall joins Science and Mrs Thorpe RE, covering maternity leave for Miss Taylor and Mrs Vincent respectively. Mrs Briggs continues to cover Miss Kay s maternity leave. To the clerical, technical and support staff we welcome Mr Goodyear (ICT), Mrs Howard (English), Ms Lally (Learning Supervisor), Ms Moore and Mrs Parrott (Learning Support). The school population continues to grow, with Year 7 intake once again over subscribed and student numbers reaching 685. October On 6 th October we hold a non-uniform day to raise money and awareness for the charity Jeans for Genes. Everybody wears denim and pays a minimum donation of 1. The day is a great success and we raise 608.52! Celebrity TV chef James Martin returns to his former school to spend two days filming with staff and students for his new series. At the end of filming he organises a cake sale and raises 175 for school funds by auctioning off his cakes. The series is to be screened in spring. Sixth form students spend three days in Blencathra in the Lake District, carrying out Geography coursework. We welcome three new staff: Mrs Hamer - Behaviour Manager, Ms Glass Learning Manager and Mr Wallen Exams Officer. The School Council takes part in a debate with local councillors as part of Local Government week.
November Our first Parents Forum gives parents an opportunity to hear a presentation on the Positive Discipline Policy, followed by a question and answer session and general discussion. The annual Celebration Evening takes place. The school hall is packed with over 400 students, staff and guests including the mayors of Malton and Norton, Cynthia Welbourn - the Director of Education for North Yorkshire, and former staff and students. They watch an evening of news reports, musical interludes, gymnastics display and a comic dance routine, interspersed with awards to all seven year groups in the school (Year 7 to 6 th form), as well as the award of special prizes for sport, music, maths, and science. The following night (Friday) the hall is packed again for the World Premiere of a film called Heather and Maple a documentary about the emigration of families from Ryedale to Canada in the 19 th century. The whole project is masterminded by Mick Benson of the Ryedale Folk Museum and our Head of History, Mrs Dore, and financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund. At the beginning of Enterprise Week each member of Year 9 is given 1 and the challenge of using their enterprise skills to make a profit using their own initiative. Cake and biscuit selling, sweets stalls, nail painting, car washing and dog walking are just some of the activities undertaken. The results were amazing and far exceeded the expectations of the Maths department. 760 was raised by students and donated to Children in Need. The whole of Year 11 are involved in a National Challenge to develop and promote a product that would be fun and earn a ton! The members of the winning team are The Squeeze Team for their presentation on the innovative idea of putting butter in a tube. Un group de 36 élèves et 4 professeurs sont allés en Bretagne en France. On est allé à Paris le 16 octobre et on a voyagé en bateau et en car. Pendant le séjour on a visité Dinard, Bayeux (où on a vu la tapisserie), Arromanches, Le Mont St Michel et St Malo. Year 8 students visit Malton Police Station. They watch a student colleague being arrested at Woolworths (a mock arrest!) They use speed cameras, watch the Police dogs and try on some of the protective clothing worn by the Police. Year 7 boys and girls compete in the annual house swimming gala. Water come first, followed by Fire, Earth and Air. Former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko dies in London Hospital after being poisoned with a radioactive substance. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes tie the knot in an Italian castle. December The last Wednesday of term sees our annual Christmas Show take place. With 130 students involved, and all tickets sold out, extra chairs have to be brought in to accommodate a number of guests who arrived to pay at the door. The Sixth Form finish off the evening with a mini-pantomime, The Wizard of Oz. The Lower School enjoy a Christmas disco, and look forward to a repeat next year. The House trophy goes to Water for the first time since it was created in 2000. The final results for 2006 are: 1st Water, with 8341 points, 2nd Air with 7478 points, 3rd Fire with 7248 points and finally Earth with 7193 points. The school installs a CCTV system primarily to protect the school buildings against a spate of vandalism in the evenings. Chile's former dictator Augusto Pinochet dies, aged 91. Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is executed. January 2007 Year 9 students sit mock exams in preparation for their SATs later in the year. A successful 6 th form open evening sees attendance far exceed expectations, and suggests a significant increase in 6 th form numbers this year. Shilpa Shetty wins a controversial Celebrity Big Brother. Other contestants are accused of racism.
Microsoft announce a new operating system,windows Vista, to replace Windows 2003 and Windows XP A tanker, the MSC Napoli, runs aground at Branscombe in Devon. Scenes of looting are shown on TV. Heavy rain and strong winds cause damage in many northern towns, particularly Durham February March Always a quiet month for news reports, parents evenings, exams all take place in this short month made even shorter by the half-term break. Helen Mirren takes the trophy as best actress in the Oscars, for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in The Queen. Malton School students once again pick up the Rotary Club Youth Speaks Award with their talk entitled Do we have as good an education as we did fifty years ago? On Monday, 26 March, students from all years and abilities turn out to run or walk a mile, some even wearing fancy dress in the theme of Ancient to Modern Olympics, all with the aim of raising funds for the proposed Sports Hall and School Minibus. An excellent turnout with more than 300 students taking part raise in excess of 300. Students join in the fun on Red Nose Day, with a non-uniform day the Sixth Form students by dressing up in their pyjamas. We welcome Mr Youngs, Mr Wakeham, Mrs Thompson and Miss England as Learning Managers. In a debate regarding the proposed development of a Sports Centre for Ryedale based at Malton School, after nearly 3 hours Ryedale District Council decided to support this development moving forward by 23 votes to 1 with 2 abstentions. This is very good news because it means that the ball is still in play, but falls short of the hoped for Yes that we had anticipated. The annual ski trip departs for Italy. Students and staff celebrate the end of term with two evening performances of music, song, art, dance and comedy. Easter shows at Malton School all have a connection with colour - either through their title, their lyrics or the performers that made the music famous. So for example, the orchestra play Whiter Shade of Pale, the choirs sing music from Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat and the Pink Panther, the Jazz Band play Green Onions, the dancers put on their Blue Suede shoes. You get the picture! The new Wembley Stadium opens after the old stadium s closure in 2000 and failure to meet the target opening date in 2005. England do not fare well in the Cricket World Cup, staged in the West Indies. Australia eventually win the tournament, beating Sri Lanka in a rain-affected final. 15 British sailors are taken captive by Iranians. Controversy follows when some sell their stories to the press. April Four students participate in the Salters Festival of Chemistry at York University, winning the afternoon challenge. The third Annual Science lecture took place at the end of April. It was given by actor, author, raconteur, TV personality and writer of the Murderous Maths books, Kjartan Poskitt, who entertains an audience of around 150 people of all ages, for over an hour with mathematical oddities and items of interest. At the end of April the PTA host a murder mystery Who Killed the Headmaster? Mr Williams faces an early demise as guests try to solve the clues. May OFSTED send an inspector to check on our progress. We receive a very good report on all aspects of school life, with some outstanding features noted. The inspector feels we are a good and improving school, with good achievements from students at all levels. The Sixth Form was judged as good with outstanding features. We have sustained our strong position and are well placed for further improvement.
June Sixth Form students organise a leavers dinner and dance at the Downe Arms, Wykeham, to celebrate the end of their time at school. An excellent turnout, including over half the teaching staff. A week later Year 11 celebrate their end of lessons with a prom in the school hall. They dress to impress, with the now customary arrivals in chauffeur driven limousine, superb dresses and suits, and impeccable behaviour from all. A brilliant evening. The following day a special programme includes an extended assembly, a reception at morning break, then a souvenir photo session at lunchtime followed by a free lunch provided by the school. The afternoon is given over to musical performances, presentations, photo shows, and an emotional farewell to all. Jamie Green, a Year 8 student, is elected as chairman of Whizz-Kidz, a national children s disability charity. A level Maths students at Malton School are successful in a share dealing competition organised by the financial organisation Rensburg Sheppard. They win 1000 for school, plus gift tokens for themselves. An election is held to find the new Head Boy and Girl. Chelsea win the FA Cup Final 1-0 against Manchester United, at the newly opened Wembley Stadium. 4-year old Madeline McCann goes missing while on holiday with her parents in Portugal. She is not found; media and public interest in the story runs for many months following. Nikolas Sarkozy is elected 23 rd president of France. Our Annual Art Exhibition is extremely well attended by a most enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Three special guests were John and Vicky Howard and their daughter Amy, who presented the Emma Howard Memorial Prize to Elis Bucher. In recognition of some exceptionally high standards this year, awards also went to Sally Fothergill, Harriet Bean and Jamie Mills. Year 7 students go camping over in the Lake District, with thanks to local Youth Leader Adrian Wilford for his organisation, time and expertise. The Year 7 Rounders team wins the District Championship, beating Ryedale in the final 9-7½. Two Y10 students, Fiona Marsden and Alice Brook, win the North Area Inter-District Tennis Championships. Fiona Marsden beats Alice Brook in the school tennis tournament, whilst in the Boys Final, Alex Carrie beats James Kellett. Fiona Marsden and Ryan Cuthbertson regain their title beating Alice Brook and Tom Thorpe. Eight students and two staff members take a train down to London to see the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Heavy rain floods the tracks, and they finally arrive in London 4 hours behind schedule, so miss the tennis. On return the York-Malton train is cancelled, and the group has to get the bus back. Roger Federa beats Rafael Nadal to take the mens championship for the fifth year in a row. Venus Williams beats Marion Bartoli to take the ladies champion for the fourth time. A system of referrals of line decisions to a video judge using Hawk-eye technology is trialled for the first time. The England cricket team take the test series against West Indies 3-0. Former Malton Sixth Form student Georgia Horsley wins the Miss England competition for 2007. Wembley Stadium re-opens as a concert venue, with George Michael headlining at the inaugural event. The country remember the Falklands War 25 years ago. Lewis Hamilton wins his first Grand Prix. Floods cause havoc around the country. Serious problems occur in Glastonbury and Upton, and Hull.
July Tony Blair tenders his resignation to the Queen. Gordon Brown takes over as Prime Minister without a leadership election. The annual Sports day is as enjoyable as ever. The final point scores had Earth a clear winner: 1 st Earth, 954, 2 nd Water, 926, 3 rd Air, 877, 4 th Fire, 872. We say farewell to a number of staff: John Horsman retired after 32 years in the Science department, Della Hayward after 19 years in the Maths Department, and Veronica Hartley after 11 years in the Art department. Ed Sturmheit, Head of English, moved to a Sixth Form College in Pontefract; PE teacher Lyle Hillier to Ryedale School and Claudia Brettle retired as a Support Assistant. The last day of term sees the school s annual talent show take place. James Poole triumphed playing the piano. Gavin Redshaw took equal 2 nd place playing Delta Blues on his guitar, with Liam White who sang Eye of The Tiger. A special mention for the audience favourite, Holly Robinson, singing the theme from Titanic beautifully, despite technical problems with the backing track. On 1 July smoking in public is banned in the UK. Smoking shelters and bins appear around the country outside public houses, but the ban appears to be accepted by all. BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston is freed, almost four months after he was seized by the Army of Islam group in the Gaza Strip. The Beckhams move to America amidst the usual media hype. More torrential rain sweeps the country, described by some as the midsummer monsoon. The final book of the Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is released. 11 million copies are reported to have been sold in the first 24 hours. August Live Earth concerts are staged around the world to raise awareness of carbon footprints and climate change. A concert is staged by the Princes William and Harry, in memory of the 10 th anniversary of Diana s death. The Sixth Form common room is refurbished, including the addition of a café servery facility. A level results are once again our best ever, with more than half the results at A or B grade 53% in fact. The star individual performance is undoubtedly Russell Goddard with six Grade A s we believe this a first at Malton School. Jack Davies also achieves highly with five grade A s and a Merit in an Advanced Extension Physics paper. Bobby Goodwill and Will Henderson each achieve 5 grade A s, Robin Goforth 4 grade A s, and Megan McColgan grade A in each of her three main subjects. At GCSE level, 70% of entries result in a pass at grades A*- C, which is our best ever, beating the previous best of 66% last year. The percentage of 16 year old students gaining 5 or more grades at A*-C is 68%, 6% up on last year and our best ever. Five students gained all grade A or A* results. The best individual performance came from Helen Carrie with a staggering 11 A* results that is the top grade in every GCSE subject she entered. Another best ever performance (equalling Emma Marsden last year). Amy Burnett scored 8 A* and 3 A s, James Baker 7 A* and 4 A s, Will Smith 6 A* and 5 A s, Simon Gaskell 7 A* and 4 A s, Daniel Pratt 5 A* and 7 A s. Foot and mouth breaks out at a farm in Devon. Restrictions are put in place and the disease appears to be contained. Later in the month it is followed by reports of blue tongue disease.
