With a view to focus public attention on the activities of these altruistic persons and encourage others to emulate them and take up community and social services, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation has instituted the Mahaveer Awards which is given every year. The awards are given for excellence in human endeavour in the fields of Non-Violence & Vegetarianism, nd Education, Medicine and Community & Social Service. From this year onwards, that is, from 22 Mahaveer Awards, a new category of Award, called Women Social Entrepreneur/Achiever with Indian values is introduced. Nominations are received every year from almost all the States in the country. The awardees are decided by an eminent Selection Jury headed by Justice Shri M. N. Venkatachaliah, Former Chief Justice of India. There are a number of altruists ceaselessly serving the weak and the voiceless in our society without seeking recognition and unmindful of any rewards. The Foundation has identified such entities and honoured them in formal functions. Eminent personalities of our country like the President of India, the Vice President of India, Governors, Chief Minister and Ministers have given away the awards. st Till the 21 Mahaveer Awards, 67 awardees from 19 States and 1 Union Territory have been honoured in recognition of their very high standard of selfless service for the welfare of the underprivileged. The Foundation invites nominations for the Twenty Second Mahaveer Awards for Excellence in Human Endeavour in the following spheres of activities: - Non-Violence & Vegetarianism Education Medicine Community & Social Service Women Social Entrepreneur/Achiever with Indian values Each award consists of a cash component of Rs.10 Lakhs (Rupees Ten Lakhs), a Citation and a Memento. Only individuals who are Indian Nationals and institutions based in India and doing work of very high standard in India are eligible for these awards. Work carried out during recent times would merit consideration. One major criterion for the award would relate to the benefits reaching the economically and the socially backward sections of the community e.g. SC/STs, women and children. The format for the nomination is enclosed, which can also be downloaded from our website. 1. Self-nominations are accepted. 2. The nominees and the sponsors should send factual information about the overall work done on the basis of the stated criteria. 3. A brief note on the nature of activities and the area of services provided by the nominee over the years should be furnished along with your recommendation. 4. Please specify the period since when the nominee has been rendering service, the geographical area and the number of persons benefitted. The nominee must have been rendering service for a minimum of 10 years. 5. If the individual has contributed through an institution, kindly indicate the extent of contribution of the individual and the impact of the work done. Please give qualitative and quantitative details wherever possible. 6. Please avoid expensive enclosures. Only one Photo copy of the enclosure shoud be sent. Originals should not be sent. Please note that it will not be possible for us to return the material sent to us in support of the nomination. 7. Please specify the sphere of activity for which the nominee is sponsored. 8. DESIRED SCOPE OF ACTIVITIES AWARD FOR NON-VIOLENCE AND VEGETARIANISM The award is given to inspire people to follow the principles of Bhagwan Mahaveer who preached Ahimsa and Non violence 2600 years ago. The award is for excellence in human endeavour in the field of Community and Social Service. The activities of the nominee may include the following: a. Supply of pure drinking water, initiation and improvement in sanitary facilities, low cost balanced diet. b. Improvement in village roads, transport and communication systems c. Rehabilitation of vulnerable children, work in slums. d. Free or low cost legal aid to women in distress, creating general awareness among women about their rights and the laws pertaining thereto, reforms for enhancing the social status of women. e. Care, education and rehabilitation of the mentally retarded and the physically challenged (including spastics, slow learners) and dyslexic children and so on. f. Adult Education g. Rehabilitation of children working in slums. d. Free or low cost legal aid to women, creating general awareness among women about their rights and the laws pertaining thereto. e. Bringing reforms for enhancing the social status of women. f. Care, education and rehabilitation of the mentally and physically challenged children. g. Working for the upliftment of mentally and physically abused, neglected, deserted, exploited women and widows, especially from rural and tribal areas. h. Working for the uncared, discarded, destitute and exploited children, including orphans, especially from rural areas. I.
