T3H 0K2 Phone: 403-500-2107 Fax: 403-500-2307 http://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/stjoanofarc January Newsletter 2017 Message From Administration Welcome back! We hope the holidays provided an opportunity to rest, relax and create lasting memories with your family. The month of December was filled with beautiful opportunities to gather in celebration as a school community. The December Christmas concerts marked the beginning of the season and we continued with a beautiful Advent liturgy hosted by our grade 8 classes in celebration of our faith. Thank you to all of the incredible parent volunteers who decorated the school and planned and organized a fantastic Not So Silent Night Family Dance. We are ready to begin the second half of our school year together and we look forward to new learning, exciting activities, and new friendships. Our youngest and our oldest students will embark upon great change in the coming months. The grade 9 students have begun the process of transition into Senior High with numerous Open House opportunities and presentations from various schools. Our kindergarten students will also be embarking upon their transition into full day school and grade 1. Please watch for information on a grade 1 orientation occurring in the spring to answer any questions and help prepare for this transition. This month all classes will also have an opportunity to participate in a school wide dance residency. Dance classes will run from January 9-24 for all grades during physical education classes. As well in the month of January, we will have a second Alberta Foundation for the Arts display entitled Mountain Man. This will be on display beginning Jan 25. All families are welcomed and encouraged to join us for our Epiphany Liturgy on Wednesday, January 12 at 1:30pm in the school gym. This liturgical celebration will be led by our grade 6 classes. Thank you to all those who attended and participated in the Senior Basketball Classic Tournament in December. Great job by both the girls and boys teams and your coaches. A special thank you to all of the student and parent volunteers who assisted in numerous roles over the three days to help make this event such a great success. See inside this issue information on our upcoming School Council meeting and the important role you can play in creating an Administrators Profile for the school. As well, an invitation to join other parents from our school community for an evening session on Online Social Networking Safety with Paul Davies. If interested in attending please contact the school by calling 403-500-2107. May 2017 bring love, laughter and good health to you and your home. Professional Development Day, Teachers Convention and Family Day Parents are reminded that Friday January 27 is a Professional Development day there will be no classes. As well Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17 is Teachers Convention and there will be no classes for all students. Monday, February 20 is Family Day and there will be no classes for all students. Calendars for 2017-2018 School Year The District Calendars for 2017-2018 are now finalized. The following calendar documents can be found at the district s Internet site at: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/calendars/pages/default.aspx Canteen News An updated Canteen menu can be found on our school website at: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/stjoanofarc/students/canteen/pages/default.aspx School Zone Traffic Safety The Safety of the children attending St. JOA is being seriously compromised because traffic laws are not being followed. Community members and staff at St. JOA are very concerned. We ask that you please consider your actions while driving within the school zone, the consequences of an accident could be devastating. Children learn what they see, please consider what they are learning and be sure to teach well: Do you always use the cross walks? It is not safe to stop in the middle of the street and allow your child to jump out into traffic. Passing in a school or playground zone is against the law. Bus zones are reserved for busses during school hours, even temporary or short term parking in these areas must be avoided. U-Turns in a school zone are not only illegal, but in a busy area like ours, they are very dangerous. Cross walks need to be kept clear so they can be utilized when necessary. Vehicles are to be parked 5m from the crosswalk. We realize parking is very limited at St. JOA and traffic before and after school is very congested, it s frustrating. However, the safety of the children is always our first priority. Please drive safely! Learning Commons News Our Usborne Book Fair was a fun event with total sales of just over $2000.00. St Joan of Arc s free book value amounts to $500.00, the new books will be in the library in January. Once again thank you for your support. I would also like to thank all the wonderful parents who stepped in and ran the Scholastic Book Fair in September. It was another huge success! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All! Birthe McLean Librarian

St Joan of Arc School A Catholic Community of Caring Be Merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Scarves for Advent/Crochet Club Students in grade 8 have been spending the past several weeks knitting and crocheting scarves for the WINGS Women s Shelter. This was a great opportunity for these students to really give back to the community. Thanks for all your hard work! Thank you to everyone who contributed yarn for this project. Christmas Hampers St. Joan of Arc School had the wonderful opportunity to support the Christmas Hamper Program at St. Michael s Church. Thank you to all our families for your generous contributions and to all of our parents that helped take all the food to the church. Sandwich Friday Our next Sandwich Friday will be Thursday, January 26, 2017. Junior High is still collecting donations as they would like to provide a dinner rather than a breakfast for clients at the Drop-In Centre. We will also be having a spirit day that day - Crazy Sock Day. Thank you to the St. Joan of Arc Families who so kindly supported our Christmas collection for St. Peter s School. Together we raised $653.00! Our donation will help St. Peter s School provide students with opportunities and programs that would not be available without our financial support.

On behalf of the St Joan of Arc School Council, we would like to thank all parents and members of the school community who help to work together with our administration and the Cavaliers Foundation to enhance the learning of every child at St Joan of Arc. Through your support, and the support of our community, we work so that that each child may achieve success and reach their potential through a Catholic education. We would like to wish all families a safe, healthy and joyous Christmas break. We look forward to your continued support in 2017! CAVALIERS FOUNDATION Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
