(B) SWOT Analysis related to the learning and teaching of English: Strengths Curriculum 1. Collaborative lesson planning is conducted in some grade s. This increases teachers involvement in the choice and design of teaching content and activities. 2. Teachers adopt a task-based approach and interactive classroom teaching with a wider range of activities. 3. The school runs Weekly English Speaking Days and an annual English Fun Week. Our English Team 1. The English Department is made up of a team of 16 enthusiastic and experienced teachers who are very supportive and cooperative. Opportunities 1. The implementation of small class teaching in some s in our school enables students to enjoy learning by enhancing their effectiveness in communication and developing their creativity and sense of commitment. 2. The PEEGS offers grant for the development of school-based English enhancement measures to further promote effective English language learning. 2. All teachers are friendly and approachable. They are always ready to implement new ideas to boost the English proficiency of students. 3. All teachers are willing to share their teaching experience with team members via peer observation of lessons and co-planning meetings. 4. The NET plays a key role in the panel, in relation to conducting interactive teaching and providing quality input in collaborative lesson planning and modeling of good practices, especially in P.1 to P.3. Weaknesses 1. Our students are very passive English learners. Students families do not provide a language-rich English environment to communicate in English. 2. It is quite common for students to use Cantonese among themselves in English learning activities. 3. Most of the students do not have confidence in expressing themselves in English, particularly in speaking. Threats 1. Most of our new students come from mainland China and they have not learnt English before. They seldom use English to communicate with teachers and other students, so extra practice and opportunities to speak in English are needed. School Name: Sha Tin Wai Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School P. 2
