Grange Primary School School Uniform Policy We believe that the wearing of a school uniform enables children to identify with their school, gives a sense of belonging, is practical and smart, reinforces a positive work ethos and reduces expenditure for parents/carers. Aims: All children wear the correct uniform to school which is practical and smart Children feel proud to belong to the school and have a sense of community Parents/carers share the expectations of the school and send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. All children are equal in their appearance. Guidelines: It is expected every child from Nursery upwards will wear the school uniform each day, with the appropriate footwear. Most items of uniform can be purchased from the school office. Second-hand items are occasionally available via the school office at prices to be agreed. If a child does not wear the correct uniform, a verbal or written reminder of our expectations will be communicated to the parents/carers (see Appendix 1). If a child arrives at school wearing inappropriate clothing which causes concern (eg unsuitable for the weather, too revealing, offensive/unsuitable slogans, etc) then the school will provide uniform for the child to wear for the day. PE kit should be kept in school all week and only taken home at weekends for washing. If a child does not have their PE kit in school, a letter is sent home to the parents/carers. Parents are asked to clearly label every item of school clothing with their child s full name. The children are responsible for taking care of their own items of uniform. There are baskets for lost property located in each building. Any items left unclaimed are periodically disposed of. If there is any reason why a child cannot wear our uniform or requires special dispensation (eg health or religious grounds) then the governors will consider sympathetically any such request from a parent/carer. Jewellery On Health and Safety grounds, we do not allow children to wear jewellery to school. The exceptions to this are one small, smooth stud in each ear and a plain, appropriately sized, proper watch. Earrings must be removed during PE or swimming and because of this we ask parents to only have ears pierced at the start of the six week holiday. This is to prevent them from causing

injury. Adults in school are not permitted to remove earrings and this is the responsibility of the child or parent. Any jewellery worn in school is the direct responsibility of the parent and child. Haircuts The school does not permit children to have haircuts that could serve as a distraction to other children. For example, mohicans or shaved patterns. For health and safety and hygiene reasons all children, girls and boys, must have their hair tied up where it is long enough to do so especially for PE. Makeup, nail varnish and tattoo transfers must not be worn in school. Pupils will be asked to remove make up and nail varnish immediately. Brightly coloured trainers are not part of the school uniform and should not be worn. Open-toed sandals, shoes with raised heels, clogs or mules should also not be worn. These are not suitable for school especially at play times. Nursery For health and safety reasons all children must have a pair of plimsolls to change into when entering the Nursery unit. Children must also have a sensible pair of shoes or boots with buckles, laces or velcro for outdoor use. Slip on shoes must not be worn.
