PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION The City of Sydney Library Network of nine branches is a key front line service in the community for local residents, students, visitors, tourists and workers. The primary purpose of this role is to deliver innovative and creative life-long learning programs for diverse communities that support the Library s vision and goals. This role researches, develops, implements and evaluates best practice library learning programs. The role also supports team leaders and library staff to develop library learning programs in line with library strategies. POSITION OBJECTIVES The major objectives to be achieved by the Coordinator are within the following areas: Research and continuous development Research and stay current with local and international developments in library and cultural programming, literacy learning, relevant technology, and community interests. Commit to professional development in programming and life-long learning in education, culture, technology and community engagement. Program development and delivery Develop, deliver and promote innovative learning programs, resources, events and outcomes in collaboration with Library teams, City of Sydney units and communities. Identify community needs and design public programs that provide enriching opportunities to engage with Library collections, spaces, technology and services. Publically present and/or supervise the professional presentation of library learning programs Continuously evaluate and improve library learning programs Customer and community engagement Deliver library learning programs that support community engagement and membership development. Promote, market and communicate library learning programs. Teamwork Coach and mentor library staff to develop branch programming Provide advice to assist with the smooth running of branch programming. Provide support and share responsibilities across a range of programming areas including: o Technology, o Reference and readers advisory, o Learning Program development and delivery, o Children s and youth services, o Adult and seniors services, o Outreach and community engagement, o Multicultural services, o Special interests and needs services, Title: Library Learning Programs Coordinator Date: 20 September 2017 Page 2

o Collections and digital resources, o Corporate services, o Learning and development. Policies and procedures Ensure compliance with legislative, industrial and City of Sydney policies and procedures, including the NSW Library Act and amendments. To adhere to Library policy and procedures within the network. To be held accountable for working conditions under the control of the position and for detecting any unsafe or unhealthy conditions or behaviour and to take immediate steps to investigate and rectify any risks to health, safety and welfare arising from any activity. 5. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES Library Learning Program Coordinators may be required to work in different locations and work flexibly to support programs. Library Learning Program Coordinators will be accountable for the following: Research and continuous development Evaluate and benchmark library learning programs based on global best practice in other libraries and cultural institutions Represent and promote the City of Sydney Library in regular professional development, through networking and outreach capacities amongst other libraries, associations and external organisations Program development and delivery Deliver programs that meet the Library s goals through knowledge of the Library's collections, technology, services, and spaces. Develop strong relationships with City units and build partnerships with local communities and businesses. Implement programs based on evaluation, research and consultation using quantitative and qualitative data. Demonstrate flexibility in producing outstanding programs through professional presentation and event management skills. Understand, plan, adapt and be accountable for effective stakeholder management, resourcing, budgeting, procurement, scheduling and reporting. Customer and community engagement Provide programming opportunities for various learning styles and preferences including self-directed, entry level and lifelong learning Implement Library learning programs that develop direct library membership and enhance Library membership experience. Teamwork Support and create a positive and supportive work environment through role modelling, encouraging teamwork, sharing knowledge, and supporting staff with program development and delivery Support the team by actively delivering on efficient program administration Coach team and branch staff in the development of skills and understanding in best practice programming Policies and procedures Ensure programs are aligned to the business unit and branch plans, support the City's procurement policies and procedures and are wellconsidered activities that enhance the City's reputation. Ensure programs adhere to responsible use of resources, budgets, staffing and opportunity costs for the programs and branches. Accept responsibility and authority for all related tasks as set out in Library procedures, guidelines and Quality Standards and associated authorised documentation. 6. WORK, HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES Library staff have an active role to play in the Safety Management System (SMS). Library staff have the following responsibility, authority and accountability: Working safely so as not to put yourself or others at risk Stopping work in circumstances that are deemed an immediate risk to health and safety until a satisfactory solution is agreed/implemented Cooperating and complying with safe work method statements, policies and procedures and participating in their development Reporting all accident, incidents and hazards to your supervisor immediately and participating in accident/incident investigation and risk management activities Attending WHS training Complying with the requirements of the City s Return to Work program A full list of WHS responsibilities and accountabilities are available within the Title: Library Learning Programs Coordinator Date: 20 September 2017 Page 4

AUTHORITY TO ACT Library Learning Coordinators have the authority to make decisions in collaboration with the Team Leader Library Programs to ensure the efficient management and day to day running of the Library Learning programs. The Library Learning Coordinator has the authority to take any reasonable steps to ensure that the smooth flow of operations is maintained providing the actions are consistent with the responsibilities of the position and subject to any limitations, corporate policies, procedures or safe work method statements. All employees have the power to stop work in circumstances that are deemed an immediate risk to health and safety until a satisfactory resolution is agreed / implemented. Such circumstances may include life threatening situations or those that could result in loss of limb or other significant lost time injury. 8. ESSENTIAL AND DESIRABLE CRITERIA Essential Criteria Best practice experience and skills in developing and implementing cultural public programs, delivering learning programs and event and project management. High-level communication skills, both written, verbal and in public speaking and presentation, and an ability to deliver high level customer service to a diverse range of people and in a range of circumstances. Demonstrated capacity to contribute successfully to a team working environment to a high level. Demonstrated understanding of the role, development and direction of contemporary public library learning programs including knowledge of current industry standards. Demonstrated capacity to develop professional networks in corporate, cultural and community arenas. Demonstrated excellence in customer service and a knowledge of equity in access principles. Ability to promote Library services, spaces and collections and a willingness to learn Library customer service skills and operations. An ability to develop programs that are sustainable, evidence based and community driven and contribute to the development of the library culture of learning following governance and procurement procedures. Demonstrated ability to learn new material quickly and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Tertiary qualifications in GLAM sector (gallery, library, archives and museum) or related cultural or educational field. Ability to obtain a clear Working with Children Check and Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. Demonstrate a commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity, Work, Health and Safety and Cultural Diversity principles. Desirable Criteria Good PC/Mac skills, advanced Office software skills and/or design/music/video software skills; knowledge of audio-visual technologies, and/or emerging technologies and social media. Be willing to work evenings and weekends (with remuneration). Knowledge of public library systems, operations and/or services. Existing professional network links to Sydney-based cultural and community organisations. Proficiency in another language other than English. Class 1C drivers licence.
