VIRGINIA COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS September 2011 To: Financial Aid Officers From: Joy Whitenack, Scholarship Committee Chair Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) Re: VCTM 2012-2013 Scholarship Program In March 2012 the VCTM will award one or two $2,000 scholarships to prospective mathematics teachers. Candidates must be Virginia residents who are full time students at a Virginia College or University, graduating in Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 or Summer 2013 and enrolled in a degree-seeking program with a concentration in mathematics or a major in mathematics and planning to teach mathematics in a Virginia school. All applicants who plan to teach at elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels are eligible. The success of this scholarship program depends on support and publicity from college and university personnel. We solicit your support and encouragement in urging qualified students to apply. Enclosed I have included materials describing the application process: A flyer for posting on department bulletin boards and in classrooms or common areas A description of the scholarship program A copy of an application form A copy of a faculty recommendation form (applicants need two faculty recommendations) A copy of the applicant information sheet You are encouraged to duplicate materials as needed and distribute them to interested students. Presidents of appropriate student organizations (Student Education Associations, Honor Societies, interest groups, financial aid counselors, etc.) and other appropriate staff personnel also should be given copies of the flyer. Note that materials are also available at the VCTM Web-site at www.vctm.org. Students who apply will be asked to submit recommendations from two faculty members as part of the application process. These recommendations will help ensure recognition for candidates of merit. Applications are due January 1, 2012; transcripts, including Fall 2011 grades, are due January 15, 2012. VIRGINIA COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS 2012 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) encourages those persons interested in becoming teachers of mathematics by offering up to two (2) scholarships of $2,000 annually. VCTM s objective in establishing this program is to unite the efforts of its members who seek to improve the teaching of mathematics. This year, the VCTM Board of Directors has again authorized that two scholarships may be awarded if qualified applicants are judged deserving by the current members of the Scholarship Committee. DESCRIPTION Students applying for this year's scholarships must be full-time students attending a four-year Virginia College or University, Virginia residents, currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program with a concentration in mathematics or major in mathematics and plan to graduate in Fall 2012, Spring 2013 or Summer 2013, and plan to teach mathematics in a Virginia school. All applicants planning to teach at elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels are eligible. Completed application materials must be returned postmarked no later than January 1, 2012. Applicants must also submit an official transcript showing grades through the Fall 2011 term, postmarked no later than January 15, 2012. The scholarship winner(s) will be announced at VCTM s 33 rd Annual Conference March 9-10, 2012 at the Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia. All applicants will be notified in writing of the Committee s decision. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION Selection will be based on the applicant's potential for a successful career teaching mathematics, as indicated by scholastic records, recommendations of two faculty members, and the applicant s narrative statement. All applications will be reviewed and will be selected by VCTM s Scholarship Committee, with approval of VCTM s Executive Board.
