Title of Position: Director of Students Type of Appointment: Permanent At the end of this year, Mr Brendan Delaney will finish his role as Director of Students and Head of Middle College Students at the College. Mr Delaney has given great service to the Pacific Lutheran College community through his roles as Head of House, Head of Middle College Students and then nine years in the combined role as Director of Students and Head of Middle College Students. He has had a significant role in the shaping of the College culture through his strong leadership of the restorative processes and the incorporation of positive psychology into the College. We invite educators to apply for this key leadership position that facilitates the provision of a strong culture of pastoral care with a focus on enhancing staff and student wellbeing. 1. CONTEXT AND CONDITIONS Established in 2001 in a picturesque setting in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Pacific Lutheran College is a leading K-12 learning community that is innovative, dynamic and progressive. Firmly underpinned by the values and traditions of excellence of Lutheran Education in Australia, students have achieved outstanding success in the academic, sporting and cultural dimensions of their lives. Enrichment programs in all three areas have enabled students to explore their potential. Pacific has established a strong academic culture, which promotes thinking, deep understandings and creativity based on the Harvard Teaching for Understanding framework. When combined with unique experiences provided through the College s excellent outdoor education, pastoral care and personal development programs, the opportunities provided through academic, sporting and cultural learning, support an enriching whole of life education. Active involvement in local and international community service projects broaden young people s world view and sense of efficacy. Our staff take advantage of flexibility in physical and virtual spaces to support an increasingly personalised approach to learning for our young people. Pacific has a seamless curriculum across Kindergarten to Year 12 with teams of teachers working across the four subgroups of the College. Staff are expected to learn collaboratively to contribute to a whole school approach as they lead learning in the Foundation College (Kindergarten-Year 2), Junior College (Years 3-5), Middle College (Years 6-9) and Senior College (Years 10-12). Salary and related conditions are as per the Teachers (Non-Government Schools) Award in conjunction with the current Lutheran Schools Enterprise Agreement. The Director of Students will have a negotiated teaching load of between 0.3 and 0.5 FTE and be paid at a loading that is a negotiated multiple of B3S4. The contract is for a five-year period. In the fourth year of the contract the incumbent will undergo a 360 appraisal. 2. ROLE DESCRIPTION The Director of Students is the key leader of student wellbeing across the College. Together with the Heads of Students, Senior College and Junior College and other pastoral leaders in the College, the Director of Students has responsibility for the professional development of teachers and the development of a cohesive vision for the enhancement of student wellbeing across K-12. The Director of Students has oversight of the design and enactment of a contemporary wellbeing curriculum that

provides opportunity for a diversity of learner to develop their God given talents to enrich and thrive in a rapidly changing world. The Director of Students in conjunction with the Director of Staff, Director of Teaching and Learning and the Principal form the academic leadership team of Pacific Lutheran College. Together with the Heads of Teaching and Learning, Heads of Staff and Students, the Business Manager and College Pastor these members form the Administration and Learning Executive (ALE). Any one of the three Directors may fulfil the role of Deputy Principal as designated by the Principal. As leaders of a Lutheran school all ALE members, other than the Business Manager, will be expected to work towards or possess leadership accreditation status within Lutheran schools. It is expected that all ALE members foster a whole of school approach to learning consistent with the College s Four Pillars of Learning to Be, Learning Together, Learning to Learn, and Learning to Know and Do. The Director of Students is directly responsible to the Principal. As the College continues to grow the roles and responsibilities of the members of the leadership team may be redefined through negotiation. 2.1 Strengthen Lutheran Identity As a leader within a Christian school the Director of Students is expected to strengthen Lutheran Identity through: 2.1.1 Supporting and contributing to the growth of a strong Christian faith community through personal example and professional leadership. This includes participation in chapels, staff devotions and retreats. 2.1.2 Working in close collaboration with the College Pastor and other key staff to support the College s worship and devotion program with a particular focus on the quality of class and care group devotions. 2.1.3 Supporting the Lutheran ethos of the College. 2.2 Enhance Excellence in Teaching and Learning As a leader in the development of students, the Director of Students is expected to enhance excellence in teaching and learning through: 2.2.1 Enhancing a positive school culture of challenge and care that promotes student wellbeing and thereby improved student learning outcomes through an integrated understanding of research and Lutheran theology. This includes the education of staff and students on personal and collective well-being and the design and implementation of effective pastoral care programs that enhance the spiritual, social and emotional learning, the connectedness of students and the support of individual growth including the academic. 2.2.2 Leading the pedagogical development of staff in conjunction with the Heads of Staff and Students and other pastoral leaders across the College as it pertains to pastoral care and student wellbeing. 2.2.3 Enhancing student learning outcomes through the maintenance/ongoing development of a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages caring relationships between staff and students, and utilises positive evidence informed behaviour management strategies. 2.2.4 Fostering encouraging and challenging learning environments that focus on the development of the whole person across the College s Four Pillars of Learning. 2.2.5 Ensuring students have access to appropriate levels of social and emotional support through networking with personnel both within and outside of the school and using internally and externally developed resources.

2.2.6 Modelling as classroom teacher, high levels of pedagogical expertise, collaboration and teamwork in the enhancement of student outcomes and actively supporting the teaching and learning initiatives of the College. 2.2.7 Setting high standards of student behaviour and attendance, encouraging active engagement and a strong student voice. 2.2.8 Actively support the co-curricular program of the College. 2.3 Engage in Ongoing Improvement and Innovation As the key leader of student well-being in the College the Director of Students is expected to engage in ongoing improvement and innovation through: 2.3.1 Engaging in ongoing learning and development in the well-being, spiritual and academic dimensions in line with the College s goals and priorities. Engaging with latest research associated with student well-being. 2.3.2 Leading the pastoral leaders in the College to enhance an effective culture of professional learning in the area of student well-being that is in alignment with College s well-being framework and goals. This would include the provision of professional development and coaching of pastoral leaders and the support of teacher engagement in reflection, collaborative planning, monitoring and review to support pastoral care staff to achieve high standards and develop their leadership capacity. 2.3.2 Leading Heads of Staff and Students, pastoral leaders, students and parents to produce and implement clear, evidence-based improvement plans and policies for the enhancement of the pastoral care and well-being of students. 2.3.3 Ensuring the vision and strategic plan for pastoral care has a focus on the improvement of student learning outcomes and well-being and that its goals and intentions are aligned with whole school goals. Support reflection and action to refine and achieve improved outcomes. 2.4 Enhance Community Building As a leader of student connection, the Director of Students will be expected to: 2.4.1 Develop and maintain positive partnerships and collaboration with College Council, Lutheran Education Australia and Queensland, Independent Schools Queensland, students, parents, carers and the wider community. This would include links and partnerships with other learning and service agencies including TAFE, universities, professional education networks and service agencies. 2.4.2 Provide leadership and support for the Heads of Staff and Students, Head of Houses and Pastoral Care teachers across the Middle and Senior College and through the Heads of Staff and Students, class teachers that enhances connection and cohesion. 2.4.3 Embrace inclusion and help build a culture of high expectation that takes account of the richness and diversity of the wider school community and education systems and sectors. Oversee the College s Student Exchange program. 2.4.4 Professionally enhance, encourage and support the leadership of other members of Administration and Learning Executive, staff, students and parents to enhance student well-being and learning outcomes. 2.5 Lead Effective Organisation and Management As the leader of student wellbeing of the College, the Director of Students is expected to: 2.5.1 Model effective leadership and be committed to their own ongoing professional development and personal health and well-being in order to manage the complexity of the role and the range of learning capabilities and actions required of the role. 2.5.2 Develop well-being related policies, monitor implementation and ensure compliance with LEA and LEQ policies and procedures and government legislation including those related to child

protection. Ensure that well-being related statements in staff, student and parent handbooks and on the website are reviewed and updated annually. 2.5.3 Lead the College s Pastoral Care team and oversee pastoral care activities ensuring that pastoral care leaders and teachers are meeting the College s requirements of their role to enhance student well-being and learning outcomes. This includes the coordination of section and house pastoral care reviews and development plans. 2.5.4 Oversee the development of student leadership in the school in collaboration with other staff. 2.5.5 Oversee administrative functions in relation to students including planning of assemblies, student orientation days, activities associated with the Foundation Council Cup, grounds, litter, lockers, bike racks and ensure that student presentation in public and within the College meets Sun Safety standards and reflects well on the Pacific community. 2.5.6 Liaise with the Head of Outdoor Education to oversee the College s Outdoor Education program with a particular focus on Years 6-12. 2.5.7 Oversee the production of the yearly Student Handbooks and daily student notices in consultation with other staff. 2.5.8 Oversee fundraising and special events such as the Commencement Service, Year 12 Graduation and Formal and End of Year Service. 2.5.9 Contribute to the strategic planning activities including budgeting and master planning as they pertain to pastoral care. This includes the annual review and development of the student wellbeing development plan in collaboration with other pastoral leaders. 3. WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY Specific duties include: 3.1 Setting the example for all employees to follow and implement the concepts of workplace health and safety. 3.2 Discussing the safety aspects of all operations with their employees and ensuring that employees understand that health and safety is important to themselves and to the College. 3.3 Ensuring that managers under their delegation are aware of their workplace health and safety responsibilities and follow procedures that are established for health and safety e.g. excursion procedures. 3.4 Responding to all employee safety suggestions and taking appropriate action to correct any substandard conditions, or reporting to the Principal items beyond their authority to remedy. 3.5 Ensuring the highest possible standard of housekeeping is maintained throughout their area of control. 3.6 Encourage students to keep eating and play areas clean. 4. SELECTION CRITERIA As a senior leadership role, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate or have the demonstrated capacity to develop the capabilities described below. The successful applicant will demonstrate that they: SC.1 Have the capacity to enhance the Lutheran identity of the College through supporting and contributing to the growth of a strong Christian faith community through personal example and professional leadership. The successful applicant will need to possess or be willing to work towards the attainment of leadership status within the Lutheran Education accreditation process.

The ability to support students and staff to build and contribute to a culture of care, dignity and respect that enables students to optimise their learning will be a key part of the role. Have demonstrated skills of leading the professional development of staff through formal and informal strategies. This includes an understanding of the AITSL standards and having the capacity to engage in effective coaching conversations. A high level of pedagogical expertise in the classroom context will be expected. An understanding of adult learning will be an advantage. Have demonstrated skills to plan and implement evidence-based improvement strategies including the ongoing shaping and reviewing of the vision for pastoral care and student wellbeing within the College. Have highly developed interpersonal capacities that enable effective leadership including the ability to collaborate with other leaders within the College to plan and implement a P-12 approach to pastoral care and support the formation and implementation of other P-12 goals and priorities. Personal capacities to effectively lead staff including the ability to effectively use change management strategies, and engage in collaborative reflection, learning and action. Demonstrated qualities of confidence, flexibility, teamwork, resilience, innovation and perseverance to grow the capacity of an effective learning community will also be expected. This will include a personal commitment to lifelong learning and growth. Have demonstrated skills to support the co-curricular program of the College. 5.
