English for Academic Purposes Sessions Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer Schedule Monday to Friday, 9 am 1 pm, or 1 pm 5 pm, depending on the results of your placement test (20 hours per week) Levels & Duration: Beginner, Low-Intermediate, Intermediate, High-Intermediate and Advanced Each level usually takes 10-1 to complete. Skills Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing Placement Test On the first day of class: 9 am Conversation Partners September to May, Monday to Friday, 1 pm 2 pm, or 5 pm 6 pm (5 hours per week) Summer Conversation Partners Afternoon activities & conversation partners will be available three days a week during the summer. This program will allow plenty of opportunity to practice and make new friends. Age Requirements Students must be at least 16 years old at the start of the program. Students who are 16 and 17 years old must have a legal guardian in Montreal and notarized guardianship forms must be submitted. Application Deadline Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents: Apply at least 2 weeks before the start of classes. International students and visitors to Canada: Apply at least 3 months in advance so that you can obtain the documents necessary to enter and study in Canada. Program Description This intensive non-credit program is designed for people who wish to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. There will be a placement test on the first day of class. Students follow textbooks from the North Star series, depending on their level. There is regular testing of the material, and students are expected to complete homework assignments, write book reports, and prepare for weekly oral presentations. Each level usually takes 10 to 1 to complete. A Certificate of Completion is awarded at the end of each level. Vanier College is located in the community of Saint-Laurent in Montreal, Quebec. CAQ and Study Permit International applicants who will remain in Canada for less than 6 months are not required to obtain a Quebec Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ) or a Study Permit. However, citizens of certain countries require a Temporary Resident Visa (visitor s visa) for Canada. International applicants who will remain in Canada for 25 weeks or more (6 months or more) for studies must apply for a CAQ after they receive their official Letter of Acceptance from the Vanier College Language School. The student can apply for their Study Permit after the CAQ has been obtained. International students who are planning to study English at the Vanier College Language School and then switch to an Academic Program at Vanier College will have to extend and change the conditions on their CAQ and Study Permit after they have been admitted to an Academic Program. The Vanier College Language School cannot provide Letters of Acceptance for Academic Programs. To obtain more information about Immigration, please visit www.cic.gc.ca. Medical Insurance All students must have medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada. GuardMe(www.guard.me/vc) offers insurance to international students at a cost of $1.70 CDN per day ($119 CDN for 10 weeks). Accommodation Vanier College does not have a student residence but we do offer homestay and independent living accommodation options. The Language School offers a full service of accommodation options. Students have the option to choose homestay or independent living in homestay. March 1st is the deadline to apply for the Autumn semester. November 1st is the deadline to apply for the Winter semester. Please note that applications for the Winter semester will only be accepted from international students who already possess a Study Permit that is valid until June of the same academic year. Classes begin at the end of January. Applicants who do not pass the English Admission Test (or do not have the minimum TOEFL / IELTS requirement) will not be accepted into Academic Programs at Vanier College. After you receive your CAQ, apply for a Study Permit at the Canadian Embassy or Consulate You must have valid medical insurance for the duration of your stay in Canada. You may begin your studies at the Vanier College Language School when you have a valid CAQ and Study Permit.
