TCDSB Schools that succeed in bringing issues related to cultural and linguistic diversity from the periphery to the center of their mission are much more likely to prepare pupils to thrive in the interdependent global society within which they will live. These schools will communicate to pupils and communities that their access to more than one culture and language is a resource that can enrich the entire school. J. TCDSB s International Languages Program (Elementary) In an increasingly interdependent and global world, bilingual or multilingual individuals are in demand and their skills can greatly benefit society. International Languages Elementary(ILE) Program, Ministry of Education, 2012 The Toronto Catholic District School Board takes pride in providing students with valuable opportunities to develop literacy and fluency in a third language. Currently it offers International Languages (IL) at the elementary level in two delivery models: Extended Day International Languages Program and After-Hours International Languages Program. IL TCDSB Site: https://www.tcdsb.org/programsservices/schoolprogramsk12/internationallanguages/pages/default.aspx Extended Day International Languages Program (Elementary) International Languages Program (Elementary) is provided during the school day when at least 67 percent of the parents of a school request a language program to be established during the school day. The school day is then lengthened to accommodate the International Language instruction. Parents do not need to register for this program, as all children attending an Extended Day IL School, will take the third language offered. After-Hours International Languages Program (Elementary) After-Hours International Languages Program (Elementary) is offered outside of regular school hours, mainly on Saturday mornings, with some programs existing on Sunday mornings and Tuesdays after school. The program is offered for 2.5 hours every week, within the first and last class of the program. To establish a language class in an existing center, the regulation requires an enrolment of at least 23 students. This delivery model provides students with the opportunity to develop their first language and allows the heritage language to flourish. This can help students deepen their cultural awareness, facilitate communication with family and community, and strengthen their self-esteem and selfimage. The program also provides parents and the community of the target language, greater opportunities to be more engaged in cultural activities. Students with well-developed skills in their first language have been shown to acquire an additional language more easily and fully and that, in turn, has a positive impact on academic achievement. F. Genesse, K. Lindholm-Leary, W. Saunders and D. Christian

2018-2019 IL(Elementary) Program Information Registration Information Extended Day IL Programs: If you wish for your child to have the opportunity to take an international language, please register at a school that offers the target language. After-Hours IL Programs: There are 2 ways to register your child for the IL After-Hours Program: 1. Online registration beginning the week of May 12 th, 2018, at: https://www.tcdsb.org/programsservices/schoolprogramsk12/internationallanguages/pages/after HoursPrograms.aspx; 2. On site, at the school/center that the language is offered, during the program hours as listed on this brochure. Registration Student Information Needed: Ontario Enrolment Number OEN (OEN # is located on the student s report card); Address, parent information and phone numbers; Information related to health, such as an allergy; $10.00 registration materials fee upon registration. Frequent Asked Questions: 1. Can a new language be added to an existing center? Yes, if there are 23 students registered for the requested language. 2. Are TCDSB s IL After-Hours Programs exclusive for TCDSB students? No, students from Public Boards or Private Schools may attend a TCDSB IL program. 3. Is there continuous registration? Students may continue to register after classes have started, provided there is space available. After the online registration closes in January, parents may register at the school/center. 4. What happens if a class is cancelled? TCDSB staff will make every effort to notify parents/guardians via the Board s website (https://www.tcdsb.org/pages/default.aspx ), Twitter (@TCDSB) or telephone trees, in the event that a class is cancelled. We ask that parents listen to the news, especially during ice and snow storms.
