To access the library, log into the mycsu Student Portal, and click on CSU Online Library. You can also access the CSU Online Library from the My Library button on the course menu for each course in Blackboard. The CSU Online Library offers several reference services. E-mail (library@columbiasouthern.edu) and telephone (1.877.268.8046) assistance is available Monday Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm and Friday from 8 am to 3 pm. The library s chat reference service, Ask a Librarian, is available 24/7; look for the chat box on the online library page. Librarians can help you develop your research plan or assist you in finding relevant, appropriate, and timely information. Reference requests can include customized keyword search strategies, links to articles, database help, and other services. Unit Assignments Unit I Research Paper Topic Within Units I, IV, and VII, you will be creating a research paper on one of the contingency theories of leadership. In the Unit I Research Paper Topic, you will be creating an outline for your paper. In Unit IV, you will be collecting your research and submitting an annotated bibliography, and the full research paper will be due within Unit VII. For your first submission, you will need to choose a contingency theory of leadership that you would like to write about (see Chapter 13). Your choices are the following: leader-member exchange (LMX) the normative decision model the Situational Leadership model the contingency model the path-goal theory another contingency theory that you find from a creditable source Once you have chosen your theory, you will need to submit an outline of your preliminary research with at least two scholarly references. Within your outline, discuss why you chose your topic, possible subtopics for focus (at least two), possible research questions you could investigate, and the relevance of your two scholarly references to your research. Make sure that your topics, research questions, and references provide a description of the model, leader behaviors, follower behaviors, and any other elements of the theory you chose. Your outline should be at least two pages in length, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, with appropriate APA style writing. Unit III Case Study For the Unit III Case Study, you will answer the following three questions by explaining how you would respond to or handle the situations. You are an engineering office manager and one upper-level manager has repeatedly used the company credit card for personal expenses. How do you handle the situation? You are an engineer with authority over human resources and an employee comes to you and says, I want to tell you something about someone, but you can t tell anybody. He then reveals that someone pushed another employee in the company kitchen. What action do you take? BBA 3651, Leadership 2

You are an engineer in a firm and although you are not an accountant, company policy now requires you to sign off on the tax filings for the department you oversee. You have never been a numbers person and do not fully understand the documents. What do you do? You will answer all three questions in one Word document. Your response to each question should be roughly one-two paragraphs in length. Your completed Case Study should be a minimum of 500 words in length, not including a title or reference page, if included. Outside sources are not a requirement for this assignment; however, if you choose to use them, please cite and reference accordingly. Unit IV Annotated Bibliography For your second submission towards your research paper, you will expand upon the Unit I Research Paper Topic by creating an annotated bibliography. Your annotated bibliography will include five outside sources from the CSU Online Library that you can use for the research paper due in Unit VII. In the Unit I Research Paper Topic, you located two scholarly sources. You may continue to use these sources for this assignment or choose all new articles. Within your annotations, you will include a brief summary of the source. The summary should include answers to the following questions: What are the author s main points? How does this source fit into my research? Is this source objective, or does it have a bias? How could I use this information in my paper? Also, be sure to avoid including your own opinion on the contingency theory of leadership you selected and any information not related to your theory. Each of your five sources should include a 100-150 word annotation. If you would like some helpful tips on how to write the annotations or format the annotated bibliography, consider watching the Success Center s webinar located here. To see an example of a completed annotated bibliography, click here. Unit V Case Study After reading the Minicase entitled Integrating Teams at Hernandez & Associates on pages 436-437 of the textbook, write a minimum two-page response that addresses the following: Similar to many leaders, Marco has a team in place and does not have the luxury of building a new team to adapt to the changing business environment his firm now faces. Use the Team Leadership Model (TLM) to help Marco diagnose the problems faced by the firm and identify leverage points for change. o Consider the major functions of the TLM input, process, and output. Where do most of the firm s challenges fall? o What are the team s goals for outputs? Identify potential resources for Marco and his team in implementing a strategy to change the way they do business at Hernandez & Associates. Be sure to utilize APA style writing and include in-text and reference citations from the textbook to support your assertions. Other scholarly sources can be used if needed. BBA 3651, Leadership 3

Unit VI Case Study Review the introduction to Chapter 1 on pages 2-3. In a minimum two-page response, answer the following question: Given the description of the leadership situation facing the airplane crash survivors described on pages 2-3, how would leader-member exchange (LMX), the normative decision model, the Situational Leadership theory, the contingency model, and the path-goal theory prescribe that a leader should act? Be sure to utilize APA style writing and include in-text and reference citations from the textbook to support your assertions. Other scholarly sources can be used if needed. Unit VII Research Paper For the Unit VII Research Paper, you will use the outline from Unit I and research located in Unit IV to create a final paper. As part of the body of your paper, you will address the following points: How does this theory address organization change? What are the leader s behaviors and characteristics? What are the follower s behaviors and characteristics? What situational characteristics can this theory be applied? Provide two examples of this theory in action. (Provide two examples of this theory in a theoretical application or from your own experiences.) You are required to use at least five outside sources in your research paper from the CSU Online Library. Use the same five sources from the Unit IV Annotated Bibliography. Your research paper must be formatted according to APA standards and include the following and be a minimum of five pages in length (not including the title and reference pages): Title page Research paper body (at least five pages in length) Reference page (at least five outside sources) APA Guidelines The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading rubric when available. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide in the mycsu Student Portal by clicking on the Citation Resources link in the Learning Resources area. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Assessment (Written Response) and (2) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. BBA 3651, Leadership 4

Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Assessments and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Communication Forums These are non-graded discussion forums that allow you to communicate with your professor and other students. Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged, but not required. You can access these forums with the buttons in the Course Menu. Instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to these forums are provided below. Once you have completed Unit VIII, you MUST unsubscribe from the forum; otherwise, you will continue to receive e-mail updates from the forum. You will not be able to unsubscribe after your course end date. Click here for instructions on how to subscribe/unsubscribe and post to the Communication Forums. Ask the Professor This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content questions. Questions may focus on Blackboard locations of online course components, textbook or course content elaboration, additional guidance on assessment requirements, or general advice from other students. Questions that are specific in nature, such as inquiries regarding assessment/assignment grades or personal accommodation requests, are NOT to be posted on this forum. If you have questions, comments, or concerns of a nonpublic nature, please feel free to email your professor. Responses to your post will be addressed or emailed by the professor within 48 hours. Before posting, please ensure that you have read all relevant course documentation, including the syllabus, assessment/assignment instructions, faculty feedback, and other important information. Student Break Room This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Communication on this forum should always maintain a standard of appropriateness and respect for your fellow classmates. This forum should NOT be used to share assessment answers.
