COURSE INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course presents basic computational skills for either review or initial mastery by the students. 1

Topics include fractions; decimals, the solutions of ratio, proportion, and percent problems; operations with integers; and basic study skills for mathematics problem-solving and estimation. Topics may also include geometry, measurement, and basic algebraic concepts. COURSE PREREQUISITES Within two years prior to beginning the course, either successful completion of MATH 0900 with a grade of P or MCC placement test. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course each student will be able to: 1. Perform all operations of mathematics using fractions. 2. Perform all operations of mathematics using decimals. 3. Solve problems that involve ratio and proportion. 4. Understand percent notation and its relationship to decimals and fractions, and solve percent equations and their common applications. 5. Perform operations with integers. COURSE STRUCTURE The daily class period will consist of: Working on your individual study plan to complete the course in one quarter. You have the option of finishing early or progressing faster and going on to complete additional courses in the quarter if you demonstrate mastery as you progress. REQUIRED MATERIALS / SKILLS You must have computer skills. A Pre-Test will be given at the beginning of each chapter and students passing with an 80% may proceed to the next chapter. If an 80% is not achieved they will proceed to the first homework assignment. The problems in the homework will be based on the questions not answered correctly in the Pre-Test. MyLabsPlus Homework There is one HW assignment in MyLabsPlus for each required section of the textbook. These are tutorial assignments with the many help button resources available to help you learn. 3

Complete each HW assignment as soon as you have studied the specific section of the textbook and viewed the section video. You have unlimited time to complete each HW and you can resume numerous times until you complete it. For each question you can click on Help Me Solve This, View an Example, Textbook Pages, or Print. These buttons will not be available on quizzes or exams. Click on Continue to move on to the next question or click on the question number to navigate through the questions. Click Submit Work when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. Homework Exercises are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in MyLabsPlus Gradebook. To review a specific HW at a later time, go to Gradebook and then click on Review. If you missed a problem, your answer will be shown by rolling the cursor over the correct answer. Report to me if you think the computer did not score a problem correctly or if you do not understand your mistake. MyLabsPlus Quizzes There are periodic quizzes. A score of 80% must be achieved to demonstrate mastery on each quiz. You have a fixed time to complete quizzes. Once you start you must finish, and you must stay on that assignment. If you try to open another page, MyLabsPlus may close and you will not be able to continue. You will progress to the next homework assignment only after mastering a quiz. If a quiz is not mastered the first time, the student will complete a review module with questions based on the quiz results. When the review module is mastered at 80% the student can retake the quiz. This process continues until the quiz is mastered at 80%. Quiz scores are automatically graded by the computer and recorded in Gradebook. To review a specific Quiz, go to Gradebook and click Review. You can click on any question to view the problem and the correct answer. The red X means that you got the problem wrong. You can view your answer by rolling your cursor over the correct answer. Exams Six proctored, individually administered, closed book exams will be given. Each exam will be proctored in a designated testing area. Each exam must be mastered at 80% before moving on to the next Pre-Test. If a student does not master the exam the first time, they will be directed to a review homework assignment. The questions in the review assignment are based on the results of the exam. After demonstrating mastery of the review assignment, the student will be eligible to retest. This process continues until the student achieves 80% or above on the exam. Then they will proceed to the next Pre-Test. Maintenance of Student Records: All work done in Course Compass/Math Lab will be available for at least three quarters following the end of your quarter. This is in accordance with Course Grade Appeal Procedures outline in the Metropolitan Community College Catalog. Assessment of Student Learning Program: Metropolitan Community College is committed to continuous improvement of teaching and learning. You may be asked to help us to accomplish this objective. For example, you may be asked to respond to surveys or questionnaires. In other cases, tests or assignments you are required to do for 4

this course may be shared with faculty and used for assessment purposes. Final Course Grade: Means that the student has completed all modules for Math 0910, receiving an 80% or better on each of the P = Pass required Pre-tests or exams, and 80% or better on all homework, and 80% or better on all quizzes. Student should attend at least 80% of all scheduled classes. R = Re-enroll Means the student has not completed all Math 0910 modules with the percentages listed above. If the student wishes to reenroll in modular math, they must complete within one year of activating their code. Student should attend at least 80% of all scheduled classes. F = Fail Indicates failure. This grade indicates that significant progress has not been made toward mastering the subject matter, due to lack of effort and/or attendance. FX = Absence-related failure Indicates failure. This grade indicates that significant progress has not been made toward mastering the subject matter, and that the student has stopped attending class, and does not return. *** A grade of P or R will not affect the student s grade point average. An F and FX will lower the student s GPA. INSTRUCTOR S EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS Attendance: Students who attend no class meetings up to and including the Section Census Date published in the Class Schedule at www.mccneb.edu/schedule/ may be issued a WX. There is no appeal for this disenrollment. A student who fails to meet class attendance expectations may receive a final grade mark of FX, indicating an absence-related failure, or a failing (F) grade. STUDENT WITHDRAWAL: If you cannot participate in and complete this course, you should officially withdraw through MyWay at http://myway.mccneb.edu or by calling Central Registration at 402-457-5231 or 1-800-228-9553. Failure to officially withdraw will result in either an attendance-related failure (FX) or failing (F) grade. The last date to withdraw is noted in the CLASS IDENTIFICATION section of this syllabus. Students are expected to attend class each day. Attendance will be taken daily. A student who fails to meet class attendance expectations may receive a final grade mark of FX, indicating an absencerelated failure. Students are expected to be on time for each class. Classroom Behavior: The student should: 1. Take notes on the videos and read the e-textbook material. 2. Participate in class discussions with the instructor and ask questions. 3. Keep up with the schedule in order to complete at least one course in the quarter. This will require working outside of class at home, in the Math Center, or other locations where computers and internet access is available. Do not get behind! 5

4. Bring questions to class. 5. Be respectful of other students and the instructor. 6. Turn off cell phones and pagers and any musical device such as an MP3 player. There is no text messaging allowed in class. (If you need to keep your phone on for emergencies, please set it to vibrate, and take your call outside of the room.) When Help is Needed: The student should: 1. Contact the instructor as soon as there is a problem. 2. Use the materials in the Multimedia Library in MyLabsPlus. Visit a Math Center on any campus for help with specific problems. 3. Work with classmates, friends, tutors or Math Center personnel. Form study groups. The instructor is also available for help outside of class. Use all available resources. That is, keep up with the prescribed schedule to complete a minimum of one course in one quarter. Of course, you can proceed as quickly as you desire and complete up to three courses for no additional cost. Keep an efficient notebook. Students in this course are required to keep a notebook where they show the work they did to complete homework and quiz assignments in MyLabsPlus (MLP). Work should be kept organized and well labeled. Any notes from reading the text, watching videos, powerpoints, etc., should also be kept in this notebook. Work for completing exams will be recorded on special paper at the time of testing. Notebooks will be reviewed throughout the quarter.
