The Modern Foreign Languages Department The department is led by the Director of Modern Foreign Languages, who is supported by a number of TLR holders in order to ensure positive outcomes for all students in the department. The department consists of seven teachers with a range of experience and includes colleagues who work closely with exam boards. Modern Foreign Language staff share six dedicated, air-conditioned classrooms occupying a complete floor of our building. All staff have access to a dedicated languages ICT classroom situated in the department, in addition to a number of ICT classrooms around school. Each language classroom has an inter-active whiteboard ans is equipped with all of the resources necessary to allow outstanding teaching to take place. We employ a topic based approach in all Key Stages based on a number of textbooks. In Y7 we primarily use Studio and Viva! and in Y8 and Y9 we use the AQA GCSE textbooks. Supplementary materials from Voilà and Así are used across the key stage. At GCSE our main resource is the Edexcel GCSE course book. At KS5 we follow the Hodder Education Dynamic Learning package. We subscribe to a number of websites and are constantly adding to our bank of resources. Four of our classrooms have a store room for resources and we also have a departmental workroom. We are a 'data-rich' department, and this plays a key role in tracking progress and raising attainment. Examination results at KS4 are consistently significantly above national averages and continue to improve. Outcomes at KS5 are strong and improving year-onyear. The department is keen to ensure even greater success in the future. The department is forward-thinking and is happy to embrace new ideas and approaches in our continued pursuit to raise standards yet further. The department is united in its desire to be the best. Staff involvement in the school s programme of International Dimension is a major strength. Student exchanges are shared with schools in Paraguay and France. There are annual, popular Key Stage 3 residential ventures to both France and Spain. This year a study visit to Madrid has been offered to KS4 and KS5 students. A range of additional extra-curricular opportunities embracing students from all three Key Stages also exist. The Modern Foreign Languages department is warm and welcoming and this post would suit a dedicated teacher with drive, energy, commitment and a firm belief that only the very best will do. In return, the Modern Foreign Languages department can offer challenges and rewards in equal measures - and the opportunity to work in a happy and well-respected school. If you would like to discuss the role or would like to arrange a visit please contact me on the school telephone number or by email (AAt@waleshigh.com). Message from the Headteacher Wales High School is a happy, popular and highly successful school which provides an excellent education for over 1,600 children and young people and I am immensely proud to be the Headteacher of this vibrant learning community. Our aim is for all of our students to achieve their potential and to prepare them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Pupils are valued as individuals and we are passionately committed to their achievement, personal growth and excellence in everything we do. We have a hugely talented and committed staff team, with a range of well qualified and dedicated professionals to make sure that our curriculum, guidance, care and support meets the different needs of every young person, and we pride ourselves on having high expectations which ensures that our students are well organised, caring and supportive of each other and also personally ambitious. Our strong tradition of success is built on a firm foundation of pastoral care, and we ensure a climate for learning which is well ordered, safe, calm, and focused on achievement and success. We are particularly proud of the care and guidance we provide for all of our pupils, from the most academically gifted who win places at Oxbridge to those who have significant additional needs. All of our pupils are expected and encouraged to become independent learners and to develop their leadership skills, so they can fully participate in our rich extra-curricular programme. Teachers and students work in a collaborative and orderly atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. This gives the students a sense of belonging and a pride in our school and in themselves. Above all, we are committed to working together as a team. We believe that by working together we can ensure opportunity and success for everyone. Every young person has unlimited potential, together we can make sure that this potential is realised and fulfilled.
