FOUNDATION and Academic Skills

Our Department Welcome to the Buckingham Foundation and Academic Skills Department. Our aim is to support you in your academic journey towards a degree at Buckingham in a diverse and encouraging learning environment. We work closely with all Schools to ensure our Foundation programmes prepare you with the necessary academic, intellectual and practical skills for your chosen programme of study, be it in Business, Humanities, Law or Science. You will become an independent learner who is prepared for university study, by experiencing all the teaching and learning methods used in British universities..

What We Offer If you study with us, you can bridge the gap between your current qualifications and the knowledge and skills required for undergraduate programmes. Whether you have yet to achieve the necessary academic qualifications, or your English language is not yet at the required standard, we will help you to identify your needs and direct you towards the right programme for you. Furthermore, with our unique two-year degree programme, you can come to Buckingham and complete your foundation programme and your degree in just three years. Our teaching methods Programmes last between one and four terms, depending on your existing qualifications. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of eight students for tutorial classes, assuring you of the close personal attention you need to help you to achieve your full potential. You will experience all the teaching and learning methods used in British universities, such as lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will develop your listening and note-taking skills and learn how to take part in seminars and gain practice and training in the different kinds of assessment that are common in higher education. These include essays, reports, individual and group presentations, learning journals, project work and examinations. All our programmes are taught by Buckingham s subject-specialist staff, so you will be part of university life from your first day. Classroom teaching is supported by a virtual learning environment which includes a wide variety of online learning resources. Pastoral care We put a great emphasis on the pastoral care of our students. You will be allocated a personal tutor to help you with academic and non-academic issues and guide you successfully through to your undergraduate programme. In-sessional support We also offer a range of Academic Skills modules tailored to help undergraduate and postgraduate students with writing skills, structuring course work, or with English language development, so that when you leave the Foundation Department you can continue to be supported with your academic work. 3
