What is the proposed project? Renee McKenna and Art in Every Classroom, Inc., have received approval from Ronnie Scott of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to create a two part, culturally inclusive, artistic beautification project for South Sunset Playground and South Sunset Community Center on Vicente @ 40th Ave. What are we doing? Creating and installing a Nature Stream tile mosaic of a river and forest scene with animal tiles created by community members and children. These ceramic tile mosaics would run the length of the two walls underneath the tennis and basketball areas and be visible from Vicente St. The mosaics would be 124 feet in length for one wall and 65 feet on the other. The walls range in height from 4 to 67 and are long, triangular shapes. The color scheme would be primarily blue and green, with bright yellow, red, orange and purple flowers, butterflies water creatures and animals throughout. Why should we do this? South Sunset is an urban playground. It is surrounded by chain link fence and cement walls. Art brings beauty, color and energy into the cemented space. The space will be more enjoyable, not just for those visiting, but also for those walking or driving past. Vicente @ 39th -40th Ave is a vibrant, busy area, located between Ulloa and St. Gabriel Schools and home to the much used Self Help for the Elderly. There are many small businesses nearby which create a lot of foot traffc, not to mention the athletic fields behind the playground which are in constant use. The mosaic will be clearly visible from the street. The mosaic will act as a stream or a visual path flowing the length of the low playground walls promoting interaction and wonder for a all ages. The creation of this project will not only engage and involve the community in its creation, it will celebrate the diversity of the many citizens who use the park and foster respect for their many cultures. Many community members will participate in the creation of the projects through painting ceramic tiles of creatures living in the mosaic, as well as tiling, grouting and painting. Self Help for the Elderly, the organization which served lunch and provides many programs for the Asian community, is very excited about this project. We have engaged many of their elderly patrons to create tiles at our Buy a Tile/Paint a Tile Parties and perhaps get some of them to volunteer to lay tiles as we install the mosaic. Some local classrooms have expressed interest in participating in the mosaic, which will give the children with the experience of having beautified their neighborhood park and brought their art to the public forum for all to appreciate. There is overwhelming community support for this project. It will be fun, have community involvement, bring about awareness of nature and the environment and be an overall great final product for the community to be proud of. Who is going to manage and create the artwork? The project would be managed by Renee McKenna, a local artist and art teacher at St. Gabriel School on 41st Ave. Mrs. McKenna is an experienced muralist and mosaic artist, with seven art installations in Sunset area schools. Funding for the project will go through Art in Every Classroom, Inc. About Art in Every Classroom, Inc. Art in Every Classroom, Inc. (AEC), is a San Francisco based non-profit dedicated to bringing art classes, programs and art supporting grants to San Francisco. AEC has sponsored the creation of 2 murals at St. Gabriel school, supported an after school art program at South Sunset Community Center and is in it s third year of supporting the art program at St. Gabriel school for 18 classrooms. AEC operates on grants and the generous donations of community supporters. AEC was created in 2008, incorporated in 2010 and gained 501-c3 status in 2011. We have a six member board which meets monthly. How will this project be funded? Art in Every Classroom hosted three main fundraisers, two Buy a Tile/Paint a Tile fundraisers; one on Sunday, November 6, 2011 was held at South Sunset Playground and Community Center with a second tile party was held on March 25, 2012. The third fundraiser was a Jingle Bell 5K/10K Fun Run held on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 8:30 to 10:30am. These events included members of the Sunset community of all ages and demographics, District 4 Representative Carmen Chu, representatives from Goodwill Industries and many more. We have also been pursuing local community grants. How will this project be executed? Renee McKenna will be the artist overseeing the project and doing the bulk of the mosaic creation and installation. AEC has gathered a long list of community volunteers who want to help with the mosaic creation. The Nature Stream ceramic tile mosaic would be created in 10 to 15 foot phases or sections. The mosaic tile design would be glued onto 3 foot lengths of polypropelene mesh in Ms. McKenna s San Francisco studio. When weather permits, the tile/mesh would be applied to the wall with thinset mortar, covered and secured for safety and allowed to dry overnight and grouted the following day with colored grout. Over 150 community created tiles of creatures and insects, sizes 2x2 and 4x4, will be included in the mosaic. The community tiles will be evenly dispersed across the 188 span of the two mosaic walls. The larger, 8x8, community sponsor tiles would be placed in rows on the side wall adjacent to the mosaic, near the club house. Two community tile parties will be organized as weather allows, each bringing community volunteers to install tile and grout under the direction of Renee McKenna. How long will this project take? The mosaic installation will take 250 to 300 man hours. As this is a volunteer project, we expect the mosaic installation to take 2 to 3 months depending on weather. Preparation To prepare for tile installation, Cormican Plastering will apply diamond lath and scratch coat the two, long triangular walls to be mosaiced. Construction During tile installation, the work area would be roped off from the public. After the tile is applied, the tiled area will be covered with plastic, secured and marked with caution tape while the mortar dries overnight, to ensure the safety of the public and so that no one damages the work in progress. Grout would be applied the following day. Maintenance Art in Every Classroom staff will repair broken tiles and remove any graffti within 48 hours of the report. Materials needed We will need approximately 350 square feet of premium ceramic tiles, mirror pieces, glass tiles and ceramic specialty tiles. 20 bottles of ceramic glaze, 10 bottles of detail glaze, 20 bags of exterior grade tile mastic and 20 bags of grout for the Nature Mosaic. We also need to purchase kiln space for the 100 plus tiles created by community members, children and sponsors N a t u re St re a m Art in Every Classroom, Inc. in Every Classroom, Inc. Art Bringing Art Classes & Grants to San Francisco Schools About the artist Renee McKenna, MA Creating Public Art for Children Renee McKenna lives and works in the Sunset District of San Francisco with her husband, their 2 children and dog. Renee divides her time between her private hypnotherapy practice in her home offce, volunteering to teach art to the children of St. Gabriel School, working with Art in Every Classroom, Inc, the non-profit that she helped found and doing her own artwork nights and weekends. Though Renee is an accomplished painter and sculptor, her first love is public art. Renee began producing large scale outdoor works at Playmates Preschool on 42nd Ave @ Santiago, when her children were attending preschool there. Renee is currently working on the South Sunset Mosaic Project on Vicente at 40th Ave. She is currently fundraising for the 400 square foot mosaic to be installed at the playground in fall 2012. Her first mural was ABC Wall in 2007, at Playmates Preschool. This 100 x 4 mural of the alphabet has plywood cut outs of pictures matching different letters. The success of this 3d mural inspired Ms. McKenna to produce a larger, 3d mural, Bugs covering the entire back wall of the preschool school. Created in 2008 and visible from 41st Ave, the 60 x 16 mural includes 5 large cutouts of creatures, some of which appear to fly off the wall. The following is a list of Renee McKenna s other public artwork: Found Object Collage Mosaic with Children 2008. 100 x 30 tile and toy mosaic. Playmates Preschool, 2550 42nd Ave, San Francisco. St. Francis and the Animals (2011) 35 x 16 mural at St. Gabriel School, 40th Ave @ Vicente, San Francisco. About Art in Every Classroom, Inc. Art in Every Classroom is a nonprofit educational foundation based in San Francisco. We seek to provide complete art programs including comprehensive curricula, trained art teachers, and high-quality materials to San Francisco schools that otherwise would not have such programs. We also have a micro-grant program that provides funds to teachers and schools in San Francisco to support art in the classroom. (Contact us at artineveryclassroom@yahoo.com if you have questions or would like to apply.) History For several years a small group of parents (and artists) at a K-8 Catholic school in San Francisco s Sunset District have been volunteering to teach art to their children s classes. This was great for the classes that were being served, but most of the students did not benefit from these classes. In 2009 one of the parent volunteers decided to seek funding for a formal art program that would serve all of the school s students. The school administration supported the idea, and fellow parent who sat on the board of a local charitable foundation stepped forward with a modest grant to secure art supplies and pay small stipends to two parent teachers who would provide art lessons to the school s classes who did not have volunteers. The art program was born. In 2010 the art program s founders Renee McKenna, Kim Saccio-Kent, and Esther Lam, formed Art in Every Classroom, Inc. as a nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to bringing high-quality art education to other schools in San Francisco that lack a formal art program. Programs Art in Every Classroom continues to manage the Sunset District school s program and support volunteer teachers with high-quality art materials. The founders are continually seeking to develop and improve the art curriculum, which is based on the San Francisco Archdiocese Fine Arts Curriculum. The organization is also sponsoring a community-based mosaic project to be installed in South Sunset Playground (on Vicente between 40th Ave. and 41st Ave. in San Francisco).
