Awards Event Be sure to join us for the Linn County Awards Event on Saturday, November 17th at Franklin Middle School, 300 20th Street NE in Cedar Rapids. Watch for Clover signs. Arrive at 9:00 A.M. for breakfast snacks followed by the Awards Program at 9:30 A.M. Clubs will have a designated area to sit as a group. Don t forget to answer roll call loud and proud with your Club Cheer! Time to Re-Enroll! Now is the time to log on to 4honline http://ia4honline.com and re-enroll in 4-H! Enrollments need to be completed on line again this year. The deadline is December 1st. Remember, you are not completely re-enrolled until the E.O. receives your $35.00 annual fee. Fee for Clover Kids is $10.00. There is no need to send a paper copy of your health form. Brand new members will need to complete and return a paper copy of the entire enrollment form this time only. NOVEMBER 2012 4-H NEWS, OPPORTUNITIES, AND UPCOMING WORKSHOPS Beef Weigh-In Scheduled Beef project members, mark your calendars! Beef Weigh-in will be held December 15th at Tippie Beef Center, Kirkwood, starting with County only beef at 8:00 A.M. followed by County and State Fair beef at 10:00 A.M. Snow date is: December 22 same times. Beef Seminar Opportunity Beef Seminar scheduled for youth enrolled in the beef project on Saturday, November 17 at the Tippie Beef Center starting at 9:00 AM. Topics to be covered include clipping, nutrition, and cattle fitting. Lunch provided; door prizes; RSVP to Hillary Lynch at hmlynch@landolakes.com Heads up, Fowl Friends, Here s an Opportunity for You Linn County 4-H Poultry Project members are invited to show and to assist at the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association 142nd Annual Poultry Show to be held at Sharpless Auction in Iowa City on November 23-25. They have asked if any Linn County 4-H youth would be interested in showing in the junior classes and assisting with the show. This would be an awesome learning opportunity to meet professionals, see different poultry breeds, view and help with a much larger show (1500-2000 birds). Also to better your knowledge of breeding, raising and showing your birds. If you are interested in participating, call Jackie Bohlken at 319-854-6346. Entry forms and rules available at the E.O. Rabbit News Iowa and Illinois rabbit breeders are hosting a show in Maquoketa, Iowa on Sunday, November 11 at the Jackson County 4-H Fairgrounds. All youth between the grades of Kindergarten and 12th Grade can receive up to 5 discounted entries for the Maquoketa show if they present a coupon. Coupons can be obtained by emailing lynnerec1@yahoo.com 2013 Recognition Materials Available Application materials for State 4-H Project Awards, National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference and State 4-H Council are now available on line. Service Learning Trip to Omaha 9th 12th graders, here s your opportunity to make a difference! Travel to the Omaha, Nebraska area on November 30-December 1. Make an impact in a community unlike your own! Serve at a homeless shelter; help at an afterschool site; and much more, all in the Omaha metro area. Cost is $150/per person. (includes transportation, lodging and most meals) Registration deadline is November 16th first come, first serve with limited spots. Don t wait to sign up. Trip is open to any youth 4-H or not. Judges Training Registration New judges, experienced judges, volunteers, parents and staff are all welcome to attend the judges training scheduled on January 19, 2013 at the Linn County Extension Office from 1:00-5:00 PM. 2014 Citizenship Washington Focus Trip Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a ten-day trip for 4-H youth in 10th- 12th grades. The trip provides a setting to experience leadership and citizenship in a different way at the National 4-H Center. Participants may select either June 7-15 or June 14-22 to attend. 4-Hers and adult chaperones will travel by chartered bus to Washington. D.C. Some of the highlights of he trip include: Lincoln s Springfield, Gettysburg battlefield, Capitol Hill, Smithsonian Museums, Mount Vernon and Kennedy Center. In addition to tours and workshops there w ill be time for socializing and meeting new friends. Cost of the trip is $1,420 that includes lodging, transportation, our site admissions and most meals. Registration opens October 2012 and closes December 15, 2012. NOVEMBER 2012 WHAT 4-H ERS SAY..... I love 4-H because it allows me to meet a bunch of new people and do a bunch of things I never thought I would.. JD W. I love 4-H because of the countless opportunities it has provided me with over the years to make life long friends, and get involved in my community.. Tayler E. I didn t know how important 4-H was going to be to me when I joined eight years ago. I have learned, gained skills and made lifelong friends. My experiences now are going to influence the person I am going to be in the future.. Austin H. The 4-H program paves the path to the rest of my life.. Tymbrie S. Meet your 2012-2013 Youth Council Officers The Linn County 4-H Youth Council held their annual retreat and election of officers on Sunday, October 21 at Woodpecker Lodge, Pinicon Ridge Park. New officers are: Chase Grabau, President Josh Kettelkamp, Vice President Tayler Etzel, Secretary Austin Himes, Treasurer Be sure to attend the Awards Event to meet your new Youth Council Officers. 2013 Linn County Fair Kick Off Event Plans are already underway for the 2013 Linn County Fair! Join the fun and come to the Fair Kick-off Event scheduled on Saturday, November 17 at the Prairie Hill Pavilion in Marion. Tickets are $20.00 per person or $150.00 for a table of 8. The Linn County Fair Board has compiled The Linn County Fair 125th Anniversary Cookbook and it is available now. All proceeds of the sale of the cookbook will be donated to the Linn County Fair Lynn Dunn Memorial Fund building project. Cookbooks are $15 each and can be purchased from any Linn County 4-H member or fair association member. ~~~~~~ Volunteer Wanted to Help with School Nutrition Program Do you want to be part of helping kids make healthy eating choices? We need a volunteer to help with preparation for the week s school nutrition lessons. The lessons are taught by our Nutrition Education Coordinator to grades 1-3 in six Cedar Rapids schools and give kids the opportunity to learn about and taste a variety of fruits and vegetables in a fun, interactive format. A volunteer is needed to help with washing and chopping fruits and vegetables, and putting together bags of lesson supplies. There may be the opportunity to assist with in-school nutrition lessons if interested. Time commitment is 2-3 hours/ week. Days may vary. Detail-oriented is a must; passion for fruits and veggies is a plus!
