St Mary of the Crays Parish Church St Joseph s welcomes Father Brendan Carmody as the new Parish Priest. The children and staff look forward to working together. Thank You s Thank you for the generous donation of Harvest food. The Salvation Army will use your donations to support feeding the homeless in London. An amazing 78.50 was raised at the Macmillan World s Biggest Coffee Morning last week by staff and parents. Tea and cake were enjoyed by all. Winter Uniform Please be advised that after half term, winter uniform must be worn. Please remember to label all uniform. Earrings must not be worn in school. Open Morning Reception Intake September 2014 An Open Morning for prospective parents will take place on Friday 29th November 2013 from 9.15 am. Head and Chair of Governors talk at 9.30 am followed by a tour of the school. School Fund Contributions Thank you to those parents who have already paid the school fund. If you still need to pay, please send your 10 school fund contribution as soon as possible. We rely on parents to send this amount in at the beginning of the Autumn Term. The money collected is for the extra expenses the school has to incur during the year, this includes end of term treats, discos and subsidy for outings etc. Possible Industrial Action Thursday 17 th October 2013 Members of the NUT and the NASUWT teacher unions, who together represent 9 out of 10 teachers, are both in dispute with the government. Members of these unions feel that government initiatives are undermining quality education and are prepared to lose a day s pay for strike action. It is likely that a number of classes at St Joseph s will be closed for the day. I will be able to give at least one weeks notice if your child s class is affected. You will not be able to send your child(ren) into school on that day if the class teacher is on strike. However, unaffected classes will be open as normal.

Art Projects for Schools Christmas Card Project Later this month children will have the opportunity to design their own Christmas cards. Designs need to be returned to school and orders placed by Monday 21 st October 2013 at the latest. PTA Events Join other parents for a Michael Buble Tribute Night on Thursday 24 th October 2013 at Nicos Restaurant. Mrs Springall is selling tickets at the end of the school day. If you would like to get involved with school fund raising events, come along to the Annual General Meeting of the PTA on Monday 7 th October 2013 at 7.00 pm at the school. Love in a Box Following the success of previous years, St Joseph s is again taking part in the fundraising event for disadvantaged children in the world. A Love in a Box leaflet is attached. Please note that the donation needed in order to send your shoe box overseas is 3.00 (per shoe box). Please put your donation in the pre-printed envelope supplied with the leaflets. We urge all families to take part in this exciting Christmas appeal. Boxes need to be back at school by Friday 8th November 2013. Thank you in advance for your support. News from the Classes A number of clubs have started this term. Science Club is proving to be very popular in Key Stage 2. So far the Club have grown crystals, investigated what happens when corn flour is mixed with water and managed to make plasticine float! Archie in Year 5 thinks it s awesome because he got to do amazing and fun experiments. Other lunchtime clubs include netball and bench ball so encourage your child to get involved. A particular success this term has been the introduction of the theme day. Year 4 had a whole day devoted to time travelling back to Ancient Rome. Activities included making honey cakes and mosaic craft work. Over the course of the year all classes will have a theme day and staff are busy preparing a whole school theme week for the spring term.

School Council/Eco Committee Congratulations to all the students voted on to the School Council and Eco- Warriors Committee. The School Council have immediately set themselves a target of improving wet break times; with a greater range of play equipment/games available for each class. Parents are asked for any suitable board games or construction type toys that are still in good condition.
