Preble High School 2018 Summer School Offerings Incoming Grades 9-12 Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to the Preble High School s Summer School Offerings. The 2018 Summer School booklet contains courses for high school students. Who is eligible to enroll? 1. Students who live within the Green Bay School District resident boundaries and meet the admittance requirements. 2. Students who are currently enrolled by choice, but not necessarily residency, in the Green Bay Schools and meet the admittance requirements. What are the dates for enrollment? 1. Applications must be submitted within the open registration window from March 26-April 30. The district retains the right to cancel courses if enrollment is too low. 2. Confirmation of enrollment will be sent to the parent/guardian by June 8th. Mark your calendar with the dates and times of the courses you requested, as no follow-up reminders are sent after the initial confirmation, nor if changes are made following the initial confirmation notice. 3. For students who have failed a course required for graduation, that is included in the 2018 summer offerings, the last registration date will be June 15th. Due to the late nature of these requests, written confirmations will not be mailed to families, so please show up for your requested course unless you receive a call from GBAPS that this class is not available. What is the enrollment process? 1. Submit the Summer School Course Request Sheet for classes during the priority registration window of March 26-April 30th. a. This form may be dropped off in the Preble Student Services office. b. If the number of enrollments exceeds the capacity of a particular offering, a lottery for entrance will be implemented. Your completed course request form must be submitted no later than April 6th in order to be considered for placement in a course that requires a lottery process. Questions? 1. Grades 9-12 Credit Earning Courses: This program supports high school students who need to complete an incomplete course, complete a deficiency, or gain credit to open up the regular year schedule. Classes will run Monday-Friday. All grades 9-12 credit earning classes (with the exception of Physical Education classes) will run the following sessions as indicated in the coursebook schedule: Session 1: (no class July 2-6) Session 2: July 23-August 17 Physical Education 9 and Personal Fitness extends over six weeks June 18-August 3 at Preble from 6-9 AM. Please Note: Course expectations for credit courses mirror those of the regular year, including assignments and final exams. State and local standards/benchmarks are covered. All school rules for attendance and behavior are enforced. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be removed from the class so the learning experience can remain positive for other class members. Attendance: Due to the compressed schedule, students enrolled in credit earning courses are expected to attend every day. Family vacations, trips, and camps are not considered excused absences. Summer school is not the best option if such plans are already in place. Students who miss more than 12 class hours (excused or unexcused) will be dropped without penalty from the course of which they are registered.
Physical Education Offerings Course Dates Time Location Description Grade in 2018-2019 Physical Education 9 June 18-August 3 6-9 AM Preble This course will incorporate team concepts and vigorous activity with fundamental knowledge concerning the effect of exercise on the body. Students electing to do a summer course should recognize the physical challenge of longer class periods compared to the school year. Completion of this course fulfills.5 of the physical education requirements for graduation. 9 Personal Fitness June 18-August 3 6-9 AM Preble This co-educational course is designed for the student who wants to maintain or improve his/her own personal fitness level. It is designed to meet the needs of the beginner as well as the more advanced student. Participants will increase their fitness knowledge and improve the level of their strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance. Conditioning activities may include weight training, circuit training, running, use of fitness machines, aquatics and the other aerobic and anaerobic activities. Each student will be evaluated prior to beginning each fitness component to determine individual objectives. Completion of this course fulfills.5 credits of the physical education requirements for graduation. Emphasis is placed on applying analytical and critical reading skills to a variety of texts and on introducing the writing process. The course will also work to enhance student s content specific vocabulary and preparedness. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize and use various patterns of text organization and compose effective paragraphs. 9 Social Studies 9 Semester 1 7:30-12:00 Preble This course is designed for students who attempted Social Studies 9: Geography, Civics and Economics, but were unsuccessful in semester 1. Students work on the state and local standards, but the work may differ from that done during the regular year. Social Studies 10 Semester 1 7:30-12:00 Preble This course is designed for students who attempted Social Studies 10: US History & World Affairs-Colonization to WWI, but were unsuccessful in semester 1. Students work on the state and local standards, but the work differs from that done during the regular year. Contemporary World Issues 7:30-12:00 Preble This course is designed for students who attempted their 11 or 12 grade Social Studies classi, but were unsuccessful. Students work on the state and local standards, but the work differs from that done during the regular year.
Algebra 1 Semester 1 7:30-12:00 Preble Students who wish to earn a higher grade or who may have failed the 1st semester and wish to raise their grade to higher than a D (as in the Continuous Progress Math) should choose this option. Students who choose this option will receive whatever grade they earn during this 90 hour class. Should a student in the Advanced pathway choose this option, the word Advanced will be removed from their transcript and the grade for the summer school class will replace whatever grade they received during the first semester of their Advanced course. Myths/Legends/ World Literature 7:30-12:00 Preble The World Literature course is designed to develop a collaborative, self-directed learner who is college, career, and community ready. This course aligns with the Common Core State Standards. By tracing thematic and literary connections, students will examine how authors from different cultures and eras approach universal questions. As they explore identity, culture, and meaning in literature, students will ultimately develop an understanding of their responsibilities to others. Semester 1 Biology Semester 1 7:30-12:00 Preble This course is designed for students who attempted Biology but were unsuccessful in semester 1. Students work on the state and local standards, but the work differs from that done during the regular year. Nutritional Science 7:30-12:00 Preble This course is for students who have previously attempted their third credit of science and had been unsuccessful at passing. Students work on the state and local standards but the work may differ slightly from that done during the regular school year. Health PFL 7:30-12:00 Preble This course emphasizes total wellness including physical, mental and social well-being. The goal of the course is to encourage students to move towards wellness by taking responsible actions and making well-informed decisions. Content includes eight major areas: human growth and development, alcohol and drugs, environmental health, nutrition, mental and emotional health, first aid and safety, disease prevention, and communication. Completion of this course fulfills the health requirement for graduation in Green Bay. 7:30-12:00 Preble This is a required course in which each student applies decision-making and problem-solving skills to real-life personal and financial situations. Course content will include financial planning, legal rights and responsibilities as consumers, resources to support families and community, and trends of the workplace. 9-12 Career Research And July 23-August 17 7:30-12:00 Preble This is a 1.0 credit offering. This course will provide opportunities for students to refine their career interests, define personal goals, and develop skills and knowledge for education beyond high school. Students will align what they are learning in the classroom with career expectations and requirements. Students will research at least three occupations, investigate post-secondary educational options, and plan for life after high school. Special Education Students with an IEP.

Freshman Forward--9th Grade Orientation Course Dates Time Location Description Grade in 2018-2019 Freshman Forward Session 1: August 6 & 7 Session 2: August 6 & 7 Session 3: August 8 & 9 Session 1: 8-11 Session 2: 12-3 Session 3: 8-11 Preble High School should be approached as an adventure! This workshop will enable incoming freshmen to experience what high school is all about. From learning their way around the building, understanding credits, hearing about exciting activities, walking through a typical day, making new friends, and learning useful insider tips from those in-the-know (high school special guests), prospective freshmen will have a head start on their high school career before the start of school in September. An added bonus will be getting a sneak preview of their new schedule. Sessions 1, 2, 3, 4 are two-day sessions offered both days from either 8:00-11:00 or 12:00-3:00 for both days. This offering is open to students who have failed approximately one half of one semester s content (45%-59%). Either semester of those courses are available to students. Students will work independently, under the direction of a language arts instructor, using both online and textbook assignments on content assigned by their regular classroom teacher. Students must complete all work assigned by their teacher to be eligible for completion. Some students may need the entire two weeks and others could possibly complete this offering prior to the end of the two week period. Course Dates Time Location Description Grade in 2018-2019 Summer Reading Fun June 18 - August 3 9:00-12:00 Preble Students will have an opportunity to choose their own reading medium. This medium may be a book, magazine, comic book, or online text. We also actively engage in group reading activities in addition to reading books independently and reflect on the stories both orally and through short journal entries. Technology will be utilized to publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. This is for the student who loves to read or even for the student who may be a struggling reader and wishes to become a better reader. We will enjoy the summertime weather too and will spend time reading outdoors as often as possible. This is an engaging and enjoyable offering where students will be exposed to a variety of pieces of literature and genres, light writing activities, and discussions. 9-12 Individualized Education Plan Students (IEP). Math & Science Concepts in Action June 18 - August 3 8:00-12:00 Preble Designed to introduce concepts vital to enhance success for freshman in a physical science course. The focus will be on metric conversions and the ability to interpret labs and data received from experiments. 9-12 Individualized Education Plan Students (IEP)
Social Media Success Camp June 18 - June 22 8:30-10:30 Preble During this fun and creative course students will participate in classroom work centering around success skills such as: Social Media Tips, Designing a Social Media Pledge, Job Interview Techniques, 21st Century Skill Work Skill Enhancements, and Soft Skill Understanding and Enhancement. Guest Speakers will range on topics from college success tips to how to succeed in an office job environment..students will work on designing life goal maps and work on presenting their work to peers. At the end of the class, students should have an appreciation for living a positive and engaged life. Summer Art Studio-Portfolio Development June 18- July 13 (no class July 2-6) 9:00-12:00 Preble Are you considering a career in art? This course will focus on developing an art portfolio to use for college admission. The portfolio is the single most important component of an art school application. You will learn what colleges require for an art portfolio and have an open art studio to work on creating artwork. This class will help you develop observational drawing skills. You will work with still life, landscape, interior, and figurative subject matter as you explore the fundamentals of a good drawing; composition, structure, value, line, and expression.
