Gifted Programs November 19, 2015
Gifted Programs The role of the Gifted Programs Office is as follows: To provide a process for identifying students to be served in the Gifted Program To provide curriculum and instructional support to teachers of gifted students through professional development, modeling, collaboration and calibration To provide on-going support to school sites as they work to meet the needs of gifted learners
Why do gifted programs exist? Two words... Asynchronous Development Asynchrony is when advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm.
Asynchronous Development Gifted individuals have... More advanced development of the frontal cortical areas of the brain Increased coordination and integration between and within brain regions Social-emotional growth at a rate similar to their same-aged peers Therefore, they... Are able to think in a more sophisticated manner Can manipulate abstract information in their working memory Are known for their understanding of concepts well-beyond their age Suffer from expectations to act the age reflected by their intellect
Imagine... Having an in-depth understanding of extinction of a particular species and connecting it to your own life at age 5? Being able to manipulate algebraic expressions but unable to tie your shoes? Feeling as if your teachers are not credible because they tell you your work is good when you know it is not.
Identification Recent changes to the Washington Administrative Code require that school districts utilize a multi-disciplinary team to review multiple data points, including scores from State-approved tests of cognitive ability and achievement. Upon review of the multiple data points, the multi-disciplinary team is to determine which students show the greatest need for highly capable services. For this reason, BSD no longer utilizes a matrix or specific score criteria to identify students in need of services.
