On January 19th our school hosted over 30 principals from the greater Edmonton and area schools as part of a Principal s Community of Practice. It was an excellent event, where Principals got to see firsthand some of the leadership opportunities and exciting programs within our school. The focus of the morning was Developing and Facilitating Leadership, and the feedback received in relation to our school s opportunities was fantastic. The morning was highlighted by our Lighthouse Team students, who led the Principals through an informal tour of the school and programs. It was so great to see the kids shine! 9M participated in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program at Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert on January 11, 2017. P.A.R.T.Y. is based on the understanding that 90% of all injuries are both predicable and preventable. It s about learning through vivid and emotional experience, it s about learning from real people and their very real experiences. This P.A.R.T.Y. takes young people through the path of a trauma patient as they are rushed through the trauma room doors, into surgery, rehab and, if lucky enough, recovery. This P.A.R.T.Y. is about experiencing what happens when young people make a decision that changes their life forever. Students who participate in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program leave knowing that they have the power to make the right choice. Science Hands On Option-Frog Dissection Page 3 Lilian Schick School (780) 921-2200

Students in the grade 8 math class created 3D models and net models of famous building from around the world to explore the concept of surface area. Buildings show in this picture include Big Ben, The Las Vegas Trump Tower, The Eiffel Tower, The Simpson s House, and The Willis Tower in Chicago. Students enjoyed learning about surface area and famous landmarks while discovering properties of surface area. Outdoor Education Presentation Thank You Mr. Mercer and Alex for sharing your expertise and stories related to survival and essentials for survival kits. We learned a lot and were entertained by your real life examples. Page 4 Lilian Schick School

On Wednesday, January 18th the Outdoor Education class went on a field trip to learn about emergency fires. We built two types of fires. The fires were an emergency fire and a signal fire. Most of the groups were very successful and others had to much or not enough fuel. The fuel we used was dead spruce and grass. The most challenging part was to get the fire started but that was also the fun part. Another challenging part was trying to find spruce with dead needles. Another fun part was running through the bush. An emergency fire is so you don t get hypothermia and to keep you warm. A smoke signal fire is made of spruce and bush which smoke to signal planes or helicopters. Thank you to all the supervisors out helping us students. -Written by Tyson Lewis On Wednesday, January 18th the Outdoor Education class went on a field trip to learn about emergency fire. We learned how to build a small emergency fire using small dry branches. That would help us build a large fire in a state of need. We then lit the dry bundle to create a fire with a flame that would be as tall as our knee. After learning to build the emergency fire we learned to build a signal fire where three tall sticks and string held the fire off the ground. Around the small dry bundle we added green branches that would create a smoking signal fire. During this experience we had a small competition to create an emergency fire. I was very successful because I was one of the first people done. The most fun part of this experience was being able to learn survival skills with friends. Without our supervisors this would not have been able to happen. Thanks you Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius. -Written by Tatum Enns Page 6 Lilian Schick School (780) 921-2200

Thank You to the Bon Accord Community Church for their donation towards our Healthy Living Program. We supply fresh fruit, snacks and lunch items for students that are in need during the day. This donation helps us to purchase these items. Thank You! Caught You Caring Winners Caught You Caring is a program we have in place that recognizes the kindness and caring acts of Students. If students are caught caring by a Teacher or Supervisor their name is entered into a weekly draw. Three students are chosen weekly to win a prize of a $2.00 gift certificate for the school store. Both the Senior Boys' and Girls' basketball teams participated in the Power of 3 Tournament in Spruce Grove from January 26-28. Both teams had a great weekend, and after losing their first games, both teams won 3 in a row to capture the Consolation Championship. Both teams competed well at a very challenging 16 team tournament. Great job! Page 10 Lilian Schick School (780) 921-2200
