Section 3: Grading Each quarter, you will be graded in three areas. Activities 75% Assessments 20% Withitness ( With-it-ness ) 5% Our expectation for each student is mastery of each social studies standard covered. In order to prove mastery, students will engage in activities that require them to use skills and knowledge related to the standard. In this class, being able to identify vocabulary or describe what certain concepts look like will not be enough to earn an A. Each student will be tasked with turning their knowledge into actions, and their actions into evidence. That evidence, in turn, is used to prove mastery of the standard being studied. Knowledge=action=evidence (=mastery) Activities (75%): This will make up the bulk of what you do in class. Classwork, homework, projects all fall under this category. This is where mastery of each standard will be proven. Assessments (20%): Assessments will be used as knowledge checks as we make our way through the school year. On assessments we will look for retention of facts and practices associated with successful mastery of the standards. This is how you will show that you know how to prove mastery. Withitness (5%): Withitness or With-it-ness is the intangibles related to this class. Turning in work by the deadline, coming to class on time, being respectful to classmates, and following procedures and expectations will all factor into a one-time quarterly withitness grade. This is where your effort to keep yourself and others successful in reaching our goal of standard mastery is rewarded. Section 3: Policy for Absentees It is the student s responsibility to collect work upon returning from an absence. Teachers will do their best to keep all students up to date upon their return, but ultimately the student will assume responsibility for missing grades or zeros. 2
