A LEVELS (2 years) ENTRY CRITERIA & OPTIONS 2018 Quick guide Between 4-6 GCSE grade 6 GCSEs depending on the A Levels you choose. Check each A Level on the subject-specific entry criteria. ENTRY CRITERIA Page 5 Read the rest of this booklet about different types of Btec National courses In 2017, 90% of our Btec grades were at Distinction/Distinction* with progression to Russell group universities ACCESS TO A LEVELS (1 trial year + 2 further years = 3 years) Five GCSE grade 4 including 4 in English Language and/or 4 in Mathematics. You can re-sit one but not both. ENTRY CRITERIA Trial year of AS & Btec in Year 1 followed by two further years of A levels and/or Btec Nationals. Page 8 Choose between two routes in Year One (1) Science route or (2) Humanities route (ie not science) Progress to a range of A Level or Btec National options the following year and study for a further 2 years. Typically, 75% of Access to A Levels students choose to stay on after the first year. Some continue to the second year of their Btec course or A Level (Biology, Maths and Sociology) whilst mixing with new courses. Many choose just the Btec route and others choose essay-based courses whilst a very small number opt for more science courses. NOTE Our entry criteria needs to be met to secure a place on your chosen course. Our decision in exercising judgement over the application of the entry criteria is final. Be aware that occasionally courses might not run if we fall below expected numbers at enrolment: though this is very rare indeed. 1

What you combine it with is the issue so you might not need. Students MUST choose one other science, Maths or Psychology. You cannot choose ONE science only. 6 6 Plus 6 in Geography/History or Sociology 6 6 6 (Chemistry) 66 (Double) Students are strongly advised to study Maths A Level if you choose Chemistry 6 7 7 in Maths We look for strength in Maths and sciences 6 7 You ought to be studying A Level Mathematics with Economics. Otherwise choose Business A level 6 4 6 in English Language 6 4 6 in English Language as well as Literature You need 6 in English Language. You need 6 & 6 in both English Language and Literature. We are looking at GCSEs which show a consistent strength in writing & evidence you enjoy reading novels independently. 6 4 6 6 in French 6 6 6 6 in Geography You need to enjoy both physical and human geography sides 6 4 6 6 in German 6 4 6 in Geography, History or Sociology 6 5 6 6 in History 6 4 6 in Geography, History or Sociology 3

OUR BTEC NATIONALS PROVISION 2018 Progress to university and apprenticeships BTEC NATIONALS ARE A WELL-ESTABLISHED ROUTE TO UNIVERSITY Universities and employers have recognised the value of Btec Nationals for over thirty years. Since A levels are no longer modular, the number of students choosing to study Btec Nationals has increased and is expected to rise even further over the next few years. Many of our Btec students progress to highly competitive universities and include Russell Group (top 24). Some go into degree apprenticeships, along with an increasing number of A level students such as Deloitte, KPMG and Capgemini. The rise in Btec Nationals 2010-2020 Students on Btec National courses are increasing these vocational courses are set to increase by 20%. The proportion taking A Levels is decreasing. The rise in students at university with Btec Nationals The proportion of students going to university with Btec is rising 5

BTEC NATIONALS & OVERALL ENTRY CRITERIA English Language Special Additional Entry Requirements for Btec Nationals Level Courses Mathematics Grade required in the subject at GCSE Additional information Requirements ART CERTIFICATE (worth 1 A Level) 4 4 4 in Art Key to this subject is your Art grade. Suggestions: A Level Photography, Media, Btec ICT, Btec Business Diploma (worth 2 A Levels) ART DIPLOMA (worth 2 A Levels) BUSINESS DIPLOMA 4 4 4 in Art Key to this subject is your Art grade. You can resit either Maths or English but not both. What you combine it with is the issue. This is worth two A Levels so you need one more. ICT DIPLOMA (worth 3 A Levels) ENGINEERING CERTIFICATE 4 4 Key to this subject is your English Language grade and Maths however you can resit either Maths or English. This is worth three A Levels so you do not need any more courses 4 4 Key to this subject is your Maths grade however you can resit English. This is worth one A Level so you need two more. Suggestions: A Level Photography, Media, Btec Business (worth 2 A Levels), Btec Art, Btec ICT Look at the specific A Level entry criteria if you wish to combine with an A Level 7

ACCESS TO A LEVELS PATHWAY You must achieve the same grades as for Btec Nationals COURSE DETAILS Access to A Levels is a one year course which was created to offer students who are not yet ready for A levels or need to trial A Level and Btec Nationals to test which route suits them best. Students choose from a range of science and essay-based AS Levels and complete these in Year 1. Success allows students to choose from the full range of relevant A levels the following year. Students also study a Btec National Certificate (equivalent to an AS Level) to see if Btec Nationals are the route to choose the following year. Around 75% stay on the following year and either choose A levels or Btec Nationals. Science route If you wish to take A Levels in Science and/or Maths then you will study AS Biology and AS Mathematics as well as English Literature and Language to help you improve your written work. If you do not wish to study AS Mathematics then may opt not to study this. Also you must choose either Btec Media or Btec IT. You will therefore start with four courses. SCIENCE ROUTE. You study AS Biology AS English Literature and Language Plus choose AS Maths if you wish to study A Levels in Maths or Physics Plus you MUST choose Btec National Media or Btec National IT HUMANITIES ROUTE (essay-based) If you wish to take A Levels in essay-based subjects then you will study AS English Literature & Language and AS Sociology to help you improve your written work. Also choose either Btec Media or Btec IT. You will therefore start with three courses. ENTRY CRITERIA The entry criteria is the same for Btec Nationals, students need at least three grade 6s at GCSE plus 4 in English and in Maths. Students studying a Btec in Year 11 will need a Merit. HUMANITIES ROUTE. You study AS Sociology AS English Literature and Language Plus you MUST choose Btec National Media or Btec National IT 8

ACCESS TO A LEVELS entry criteria ACCESS TO A LEVELS OVERALL ENTRY CRITERIA English Language Mathematics Grade required in the subject at GCSE Entry Requirements for Access to A Levels Additional information Requirements BIOLOGY (AS Level) 4 4 4 in Sciences SCIENCE ROUTE SUBJECT Key to this subject are your Science grades. MATHEMATICS (AS Level) 4 5 5 in Maths or 6 preferred You need to study this in order to take science subjects in Year 2 and 3. SCIENCE ROUTE SUBJECT Key to this subject is your Maths grade. Minimum of 5. SOCIOLOGY (AS Level) ENGLISH LITERATURE & LANGUAGE (AS Level) MEDIA Btec National (worth an AS Level) ICT Btec National (worth an AS Level) 4 4 4 in English, prefer 5 4 4 4 in English, prefer 5 You need to study this in order to take Maths and Physics subjects in Year 2 and 3. Otherwise do not take this. HUMANITIES ROUTE SUBJECT Key to this subject is your English Language grade. You can resit Maths You need to study this in order to take all A levels other than sciences ALL ACCESS TO A LEVEL STUDENTS TAKE THIS Key to this subject is your English Language grade. You can resit Maths This subject helps you continue to develop your written skills for essay-based A Levels and extended answers in sciences. 4 4 ALL ACCESS TO A LEVEL STUDENTS TAKE MEDIA or ICT You can resit Maths or English This subject helps you develop skills of managing coursework and it will help you have a plan B if you do not get minimum of a D in your AS exams. You need a Merit to take Btec courses in Year 2. 4 4 ALL ACCESS TO A LEVEL STUDENTS TAKE ICT or MEDIA You can resit Maths or English This subject helps you develop skills of managing coursework and it will help you have a plan B if you do not get minimum of a D in your AS exams. Triple Btec Courses = 3 A Levels Extended Diplomas ICT Health When you choose one of the above there is no need to choose any other courses unless you have a retake in English or Maths. You can mix Btec Nationals with A Levels as long as you meet the individual A Level criteria. You can study 3 or 4 courses. Choosing 4 allows you to drop 1 during or at the end of Year 12. If you start with 3 achievable A Levels then you might not need a 4 th. AS Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) & Sports Leaders (HSLA) can both be chosen in September. HSLA requires a week-long prep course 2 nd July-6 th July 2018.
