TCDSB Schools that succeed in bringing issues related to cultural and linguistic diversity from the periphery to the center of their mission are much more likely to prepare pupils to thrive in the interdependent global society within which they will live. These schools will communicate to pupils and communities that their access to more than one culture and language is a resource that can enrich the entire school. J. TCDSB s International Languages Program (Elementary) In an increasingly interdependent and global world, bilingual or multilingual individuals are in demand and their skills can greatly benefit society. International Languages Elementary(ILE) Program, Ministry of Education, 2012 The Toronto Catholic District School Board takes pride in providing students with valuable opportunities to develop literacy and fluency in a third language. Currently it offers International Languages (IL) at the elementary level in two delivery models: Integrated Day International Languages Program and After-Hours International Languages Program. IL TCDSB Site: https://www.tcdsb.org/programsservices/schoolprogramsk12/internationallanguages/pages/default.aspx Integrated Day International Languages Program (Elementary) International Languages Program (Elementary) is provided during the school day when at least 67 percent of the parents of a school request a language program to be established during the school day. Parents do not need to register for this program, as all children attending an Integrated Day IL School, will take the third language offered. After-Hours International Languages Program (Elementary) After-Hours International Languages Program (Elementary) is offered outside of regular school hours, mainly on Saturday mornings, with some programs existing on Sunday mornings and Tuesdays after school. The program is offered for 2.5 hours every week, within the first and last class of the program. To establish a language class in an existing center, the regulation requires an enrolment of at least 23 students. This delivery model provides students with the opportunity to develop their first language and allows the heritage language to flourish. This can help students deepen their cultural awareness, facilitate communication with family and community, and strengthen their self-esteem and selfimage. The program also provides parents and the community of the target language, greater opportunities to be more engaged in cultural activities. Students with well-developed skills in their first language have been shown to acquire an additional language more easily and fully and that, in turn, has a positive impact on academic achievement.
