In a recent Knight line message Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has called for making this bond even stronger. Our post secondary education scholarship, free throw competition and essay contests are some of the programs conducted by the Knights of Columbus. We as a council must continue to foster this partnership and find more ways in which we can support our parish school and catholic schools in general. Distributing vocations prayer cards to younger students thereby helping in the vocations to the priesthood and religious life is another program we should consider. April 29, 2007 marks the Church s observance of World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Let us then help in this initiative during our anniversary year and make it a special mission for our council in observing the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. God Bless you all. Your Grand Knight Kevin Pinto

CULTIVATING THE SEED Brother Jack McCaffery Charter member Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Recent gospels have made reference to SEEDS, and that they have to be cultivated to produce fruit. On meditating on these gospels, Archbishop Duke s Council came to mind. How the seed was planted and how it has been cultivated into one of the top councils in our jurisdiction. After much procrastination, I would like to give a brief synopsis of how this came about. After emigrating from Quebec in 1974, where I had received the four degrees of our Order, I was surprised to find that there was no council of our Order in Richmond, British Columbia. The nearest council was Council 1081 in Vancouver. St. Paul s had the Men s club, St. Joseph The Worker had Marriage Encounter. I cannot remember what St. Monica s had. I received permission from the parish priests to put a notice in their Sunday bulletins, asking members of our Order to contact me. Frank Kouwenhoven, Bert Mallon, Ed Clay, Peter Zacker and myself made up the initial Formation committee. District Deputy Bill Cahill was appointed by the State Deputy for guidance required. Many membership Blitzes at all parishes followed and on October 26, 1976 Archbishop Duke Council 6855 was granted a charter. The first council meeting was held at St. Joseph the Worker parish hall on 7th. Avenue with Frank Kouwenhoven as the inaugural Grand Knight. Since then, there have been 16 Grand Knights, 7 of whom became District Deputies and one became State Deputy. There are four other councils of the Order that have sprung up from this well planted and cultivated seed: St. Augustines #7916 Christopher Columbus #10681 Canadian Martyr s # 11916 St. Monica #12861. A visit to the trophy case at St. Paul s will show the results of 30 years of dedication and hard work by the officers and members of Council 6855. Jack McCaffrey

I wish you a successful membership drive. GENERAL MEETING Brothers, please do your best to attend the general meeting. Your input is vital. KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Our Council Knight of the Month for March 2007 is Brother John Koop. FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our Family of the month for March 2007 is Brother Kim and Gloria Ng. Brother John is a member of our executive and currently serves as the Deputy Grand Knight of our Council. John is one of our most hardworking knights. He makes up the backbone of our pancake breakfast team and is the last one to leave the premises, making sure that everything is put away. For our recent joint council St. Patrick s day dance, John helped in making this event a great success. His coordination and direction was greatly appreciated. As the chair of our membership committee Brother John does his best to recruit new members, which has proven to be very successful. On average the council has added to new members every month in the current fraternal year, thanks to his efforts. John is a 4th Degree Knight. John was given the Unsung Hero award for 1994-95 and the family of the year award in 1993-94. Congratulations Brother John on your selection as Council Knights of the Month for March 2007, and God Bless you and your family. Kim and Gloria are a couple who have always been active in council activities. In the month of March our council was given the responsibility of organizing the decoration of the hall for our Saint Patrick s day dance. Gloria willing accepted the task and spent many hours organizing and decorating the hall. Even though she had not been keeping well, having made the commitment she did not stop until the task was completed. Brother Kim is a past grand knight and a former district deputy. He is the Captain of our First Degree Team. He is also a member of the 4th Degree and is the current Faithful Navigator. Brother Kim is the chair of the philatelic exhibition committee which is being organized to celebrate the 125th. Anniversary of the Knights of Columbus. The event is being held in St. Paul Parish Center from 25-27 May 2007.. Congratulations Dear Brother Kim and Gloria and God Bless you both. To help defray Council postage expense, bulletins will be sent electronically to those with email. The remaining members should pick up their bulletin, which will be placed at the entrance to the church, usually when possible on the first Sunday of each month. Please notify the Financial Secretary Bro. Alberto Nisperos (604) 275-7426 of any change of address, telephone number or email. See you at the meeting! Fraternally Kevin Pinto, GK

Knights in Action Congratulations to Brother Americo Silva on being selected from over 17000 people across Canada to represent the Knights of Columbus at the Canadian blood services headquarters in Ottawa. This is a well deserved honor for our Council and for brother Americo in particular in recognition for the effort he puts into organizing the Canadian Blood Services Clinic and making it such a success. We wish Brother Americo and his wife Maria an enjoyable trip to the nation s capital.
