Autumn 2017 Accounting & Finance Departmental Newsletter Welcome to the 2017 Autumn edition of the Accounting and Finance Newsletter. Despite an extremely busy term of teaching, members of the department have been very active and productive in their research activities. Colleagues have completed PhDs, published in highly reputable journals, and successfully attracted research funding. In particular, staff within the department s three research centres have been instrumental towards the success of the Accounting and Finance Seminar Series. This series has showcased the wide range of research that our staff have been involved in and has also attracted a number of high calibre external speakers. Our research efforts and outputs will continue to grow, given our current recruitment drive. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new colleagues and hope that they find this department a supportive and stimulating environment in which to teach and carry out research. I would sincerely like to thank everyone who has contributed to this edition (particularly the editor Dr Yan Wang). I hope that you find this publication interesting and that it encourages you to engage with the department s research initiatives. Professor Emmanuel Adegbite. Head of Accounting and Finance. Editorial We are delighted to present the autumn edition of the departmental newsletter at Leicester Business School, DMU. In this newsletter you will find stories that highlight the achievements of the department, research groups, staff and students. Detailed information includes: Departmental News Success Stories Publications (Journal and Professional Publications) Conference Papers and Presentations Guest Speakers and Keynote Addresses Book and Journal Reviews Research Students News Other Scholarly Activities New Staff in A&F Department I hope you find this edition informative and enjoy reading it. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this edition. Dr Yan Wang (Editor)

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Professor Emmanuel Adegbite (pictured) was invited to deliver an Inaugural Lecture on 4 th May, 2017 titled Corporate Governance and Africapitalism Professor Adegbite explained the concept of a firm s governance is an integral part of the understanding, exercise and practice of Africapitalism. The existence of different national institutions means that increased global competition as well as the integration of financial markets will not express themselves in the same ways in different national governance systems. Since different systems of capitalism will produce different responses to similar pressures, a one size fits all approach to a firm s governance is unattractive. As a result, Africapitalism presents itself as an important and novel approach of conceptualizing private sector participation in Africa s socio-economic development. Professor Adegbite argued that the Africapitalism corporate governance model will allow African firms to deepen their commitment to confronting Africa s institutional, economic, and social challenges. Professor Adegbite also demonstrated that, in making a case for a philosophical shift, African business leaders need to think differently from the mainstream idea of capitalism in solving the many challenges besetting the continent. Study in this area is intended to facilitate the emergence of a workable, practical and useful corporate governance model to underpin the Africapitalism project.

SUCCESS STORIES The Department of Accounting and Finance has successfully achieved an NSS score of 90%, which is the most significant positive contribution to the University. The Department of Accounting and Finance has retained the Gold Status with the ACCA for our professional courses which is led by Dawn Davidson. Dawn said: members of ACCA were impressed by both the quality of our tutors and the material that the tutors produce. From student feedback forms they noted how committed tutors were to the students and this is a credit to the whole team. In addition, they were particularly impressed with our handling of complaints. They noted that student complaints were dealt with quickly and resolved in a positive manner. The Department of Accounting and Finance has successfully hosted a Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) team management game for Sixth form students from across the Midlands. Chris said: thank you so much for all your work in hosting the sixth form management team games once again, particularly Fred's work in rounding up lunch on the day and all Yvonne's organising in the lead up to the games, without which we simply couldn't run the game.
