Introduction Second edition This new edition of Objective PET is the result of extensive updating and revision in consultation with teachers around the world who have been using the book with their classes. For the second edition, the authors have also taken the opportunity to refer frequently to the Cambridge Learner Corpus (CLC), an electronic collection of Cambridge ESOL candidates scripts from all over the world. Currently containing more than 27 million words of data, around 3 million words of recent candidate writing are added to the CLC each year. This unique resource has given the authors a more accurate and fully up-to-date picture of the strengths and weaknesses of PET candidates. When you see the above icon in the Student s Book, it means that this language area has been identified in the Cambridge Learner Corpus as an area in which learners often need extra practice, and the exercises are based on actual examples taken from the corpus. Preliminary English Test Objective PET provides a course for Lower Intermediate students and preparation for the Preliminary English Test (PET), which is administered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Its level is based on the Council of Europe Threshold Level and is between the Key English Test (KET) and the First Certificate in English (FCE). The PET examination consists of three papers Paper 1 Reading and Writing, Paper 2 Listening and Paper 3 Speaking. There are four grades: Pass with Merit (85% of the total marks); Pass (70% 84%), Narrow Fail (65% 69%), Fail (64% and below). The results slip gives an overall score out of 100 as well as information about how the candidate performed in each paper. For more information about the content of the PET examination, see pages 8 9 of the Student s Book. Objective PET covers the language required for PET. The main units are designed to provide students with a good general grounding in English at the level and are not exclusively exam-oriented, whereas the Exam folders and Writing folders build on language learnt in the unit to focus on exam skills. Where material in the main units is particularly relevant to PET skills, this is indicated in the Teacher s Book. Unit structure Each unit consists of four elements: Introduction, Reading or Listening, Language Focus (including activities and pronunciation practice) and Exam Folder (with a Writing Folder in alternate units). The Introduction offers stimulating exercises encouraging students to use and add to language they already know and preparing them for the language and ideas in the rest of the unit. The second part of the unit consists alternately of a Reading or a Listening task with comprehension exercises. These tasks introduce target language in context. The third and longest part of the unit is the Language focus, which practises the target language in a progression of exercises and activities. New features of the second edition include: Corpus spots exercises focusing on typical student errors, with examples from the CLC (see above). Grammar spots interactive summaries of important grammar points which provide a reference for revision as well as a practical teaching aid. There is a Pronunciation exercise in each unit, focusing on one area which students at this level may find useful to practise. These exercises are offered as a way of raising awareness as well as to practise speaking. PET students are not expected to speak without a foreign accent, but they should be comprehensible to a reasonably patient listener. Exam folders after each unit progressively develop students understanding of the reading, listening and speaking tasks in PET. Each folder focuses on one or more parts of the exam, each part being dealt with three times in all, the third time giving students a chance to try an exam-level task. 8 introduction

There are Writing folders after alternate Exam folders covering the three parts of the Writing paper. The exercises practise the skills needed for each task type, progressing to exam level later in the book. Photocopiable sample answers are provided at the back of the Teacher s Book. Revision units contain a variety of exercises related to the previous six units. The Grammar folder is a new feature which provides a reference at the back of the book and is cross-referenced in each unit. Contracted forms of verbs are used here and throughout the Student s Book, except in texts where they would be inappropriate. Students should be encouraged to use contracted forms in their speaking and writing for PET. Suggested lesson timings for each unit: Introduction: 20 minutes Main part of the unit: 2 hours Exam and Writing folders: 40 minutes Teacher s Book Answers are provided for all exercises. Suggested answers are given where wording or content may vary. The symbol appears where the teacher will need to replay the CD track. There are five photocopiable Progress tests which can be used during and at the end of the course to diagnose any language areas requiring further attention. Photocopiable materials which accompany activities appear at the back of the book. Where materials need photocopying for an activity, there is a reminder at the beginning of the teacher s notes for that unit under Preparation. Photocopiable recording scripts are available for some of the Listening tasks and can be found on both the CD-ROM and the website (see below). The teacher s notes suggest how these can be used in the lesson. Group work is often suggested in lesson plans. It is occasionally essential (e.g. in some competitive activities). However, in very small or large classes, regular group work may be impractical and wholeclass or pair work can be used instead. Suggestions are given where appropriate. Workbook This has been revised and offers further practice in the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and exam skills covered in each unit. Some of the new exercises are based on the Cambridge Learner Corpus. CD-Rom With the second edition there is a new CD-Rom, which comes with the Student s Book. On the CD-ROM there are 90 exercises, six for each pair of units, giving extra practice in vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing and pronunciation, and there is a new PET Practice Test. There is also an interactive word game and additional resources for both teachers and students, such as wordlists and teaching tips for using these, and photocopiable recording scripts for some of the Listening tasks in the Student s Book. The CD-ROM also contains a number of exercises and illustrations from the Student s Book which can be projected onto a screen for whole class work. The Teacher s Book notes suggest how to use these.
