Test Descriptions Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsed by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Cpation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice f the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) The SAT helps college admissions officers make fair and infmed admission decisions. Combined with a student's academic recd, it is a proven, reliable indicat of college success. Since its launch in 1926, the SAT has helped millions of students connect with college success and today remains the most reliable, effective measure of a student's college readiness. The SAT tests the subject matter learned by students in high school and how well they apply that knowledge the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in college. American College Testing (ACT) The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in, Mathematics, Reading, Science and an optional 40-minute Writing test. ACT tests results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. The ACT includes 215 multiple-choice questions and takes 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete (plus 40 minutes if you are taking the ACT with Writing). An additional 30 minutes is also required f test-related activities. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) The ASVAB sces are used to determine eligibility f the enlistment in the Army, Navy, Air Fce, Marine Cps. New Jersey Biology Competency Test (NJBCT) The New Jersey State Department of Education provides us with the New Jersey Biology Competency Test (NJBCT) aimed at assessing any student who was enrolled in a biology course during the school year. The test does not include students enrolled in AP Biology. The test is part of the NJ ASK program that continues the state s suppt of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. All students who were enrolled in a Biology course during the 2016-2017 school year will take the test. These tests are closely aligned to the New Jersey Ce Curriculum Content Standards in Biology and will measure your child s knowledge and skill in this area.
Advanced Placement Tests (AP) The AP Examinations are administered each year in May and represent the culmination of college-level wk in a given discipline in a secondary school setting. Rigously developed by committees of college and AP high school faculty, the AP Exams test students ability to perfm at the college level. The tests will be administered to students at Butler High School as follows: May 1 Monday 8:00 AM Chemistry May 1 Monday 12:00 PM Psychology May 3 Wednesday 8:00 AM Literature & Composition May 5 Friday 8:00 AM United States Histy May 8 Monday 8:00 AM Biology May 9 Tuesday 8:00 AM Calculus May 10 Wednesday 8:00 AM Language & Composition May 11 Statistics 12:00 PM Statistics Partnership f Assessment of Readiness f College and Career (PARCC) The Partnership f Assessment of Readiness f College and Careers (PARCC) is a constium of states that collabatively developed a common set of assessments to measure student achievement and preparedness f college and careers. The PARCC assessments are aligned to the Common Ce State Standards (CCSS) and were created to measure students' ability to apply their knowledge of concepts rather than memizing facts. The PARCC assessments require students to solve problems using mathematical reasoning and to be able to model mathematical principles. In Language Arts (ELA), students will be required to closely read multiple passages and to write essay responses in literary analysis, research tasks and narrative tasks. The assessments also provide teachers infmation on student progress to infm instruction and provide targeted student suppt. In 2014-2015, the PARCC assessments replaced the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in high school.
