These could be for course info, assignments and forums. It would help if they had titles.

There is an inequality in the amount of information in different sections, reflecting different levels of tutor engagement.

These sections may have too much information. Trainee feedback would be interesting.

Another example of different levels of tutor engagement.

Appendix 6 Using Moodle to get feedback

Trainees had to be really pushed to contribute to these.

It was interesting to see the difference in opinion between the two polls.

Trainees were required to complete the questionnaire either alone or at the start of input.

I used a mixture of different question types to give them space to express their views.

Questions from the group interview put on Moodle in case anyone had anything to add.

Some of the forums were wellused, especially early on in the course.

A trainee s feedback. I edited the post, to encourage further reflection and comment. The same trainee s response.

We made changes to teaching rooms following these comments.

Appendix 8 Quotes from interviews with selected trainees Quotes from interview with CELTA trainees, 2 March 2010 Interview questions for CELTA 1. Have you found Moodle/Facebook to be a useful resource? Useful for printing off the information they need, organising their notes and resources and so that they catch up with what they missed 2. How/why? What have you used most? I like FB I think it s an easy way to talk to each other. Easier than Moodle (03.16) Moodle is quite useful for getting a group opinion. (03.39) Moodle s not that communicative, I don t find. It s a sort of resource, isn t it? It s like going into a library. (03.46) 3. Consider your level of engagement with Moodle/Facebook. If you have engaged, how do you think it has benefitted you? If you haven t really used Moodle & Facebook, what do you think are the main reasons that you haven t? How do you think they could have helped you? One trainee has an irrational fear of Facebook due to the fact that he s a secondary school teacher and he worries about making himself vulnerable (11.00) If you d have said to us, `You have to use FB, it s part of the course, I d have done it. (02.36) Because FB is not really a part of my life, I ve not made it part of this course (02.54) 1

So I m missing out on things on this course because I m not on FB (08.05) I don t [sic] really have the inclination to go onto FB but I regret it now I think why didn t I do that?. I could ve had my FB time in the week Now we re talking about it, I m thinking What have I missed out on? (09.22) I actually use FB quite a lot, but I haven t used it at all for the course because, for me, FB is a way of escaping from responsibilities. It s a social time and I don't want to associate it with work it s escapism, isn t it? (10.22) You can actually find out a lot of personal information some of us might not want to find out (11.22) That s a part of my life not necessarily the same as this part of my life If I add people as my friend, they ve got access to that chat Do I want other people to know about that conversation? (11.35) 4. In what ways do you think they could be improved? Discussion on the usefulness of email notifications on Moodle posts they will drag you back into it (04.08) Anonymity discussion 04.25 It really detracts from the conversation if it s anonymous it s pointless having a conversation with an anonymous person (05.49) The more people who are on these things, the more fun they are (09.03) it s a bit disappointing. I sometimes wished more people were there, then you could ask them questions (09.10) Sometimes what could be useful is having a video on there of how not to do it. (28.08) I think the information on Moodle is excellent. I think the forums bit that just needs tidying up a bit (16.09) The headings [on the forums] are a bit difficult to understand and I think What are we talking about now? The amount of forums: That s part of my confusion (17.30 I think it s sometimes disappointing as not enough people go on them. 2

There s not enough people on each forum to make it interesting and there s too many of them to find out what we re supposed to be talking about (17.50) Forcing people to engage: Put homework on there for people to comment on (18.10) We re creatures of habit so once you get more used to it then you can start going to it far more often. It s just building up those habits in the first place (19.39) I think you can incorporate it into an evening session, but it doesn t have to be every week every third week (19.48) 5. Do you think you would have benefitted from training at an earlier stage of the course? I d never used FB before I came on this course, nobody s told me how to use it and I ve not made the effort to find out so I stay away from it. (07.04) You ve got to have your FB meeting with students right at the beginning and those who don t know, you ve got to teach them. (13.45) Training on Moodle: I think so, yeah. I mean, it s relatively self-explanatory. (15.05) 6. What are your feelings about having 2 sites? If you could use one of them for everything, it would make more sense if it (Edmodo) can do everything then it would be much better (07.48) I don t like it (20.26) I think it s probably a sensible suggestion that there s only one site (20.28) Especially with things like discussions you have 1 discussion in FB and 1 in Moodle why not keep it together do everybody s contributing to one? (20.50) If you can put the videos on M, there s no real need to have FB at all. (21.20) 3

Links & access beyond the life of the course are these 2 things enough to justify running both of them? I don t think so. (21.40) It s been nice to have the opportunity to try them out (25.04) 7. What do you think are the dis/advantages of each one? Think about: familiarity ease of use your ownership of them in terms of adding resources and starting discussions etc. your access beyond the life of the course The thing it (FB) does brilliantly is those videos and those phonetic alphabet things we shared and you can t do that on Moodle (07.20) You can t put documents on FB FB is like extended reading but it s on video. So it s just like taking books out the library. (26.56) You can actually find out a lot of personal information some of us might not want to find out (11.22) I always find it a bit difficult to find my way round [Moodle] I never really know where to find things (15.17) The links were certainly helpful because they give you the information you need. (23.21) It s [Moodle] a bit like a big, untidy cupboard (15.22) I never know where to look for things on Moodle (15.30) 12.30 conversation about privacy settings I don't want too much information. I just want the information that s critical to me. (25.34) 8. Any tips for next year? If you d said that there is an expectation that you will participate in these [forums] that would be good (08.57) 4

Appendix 9 Final Questionnaire Results

Appendix 10 Quotes from interviews with CELTA trainers 1) I can see the enormous potential of these tools and think there is room for both. The main stumbling block has been consistency. If students (and teachers) don t engage, there is a knock-on effect in terms of motivation and enthusiasm. As we always struggle to get trainees to widen their reading beyond the requirements of the course, it s probably going to be the case that they won t watch videos or read documents on Moodle either if they re not that way inclined. I am certainly up for trying to drive this forward taking on the lessons of the project so we can be more consistent next year. 2) I ve really learnt a lot about using Moodle, especially to get feedback from trainees. It s been very interesting to see the vastly different levels of engagements among trainees, and to compare that level of engagement with what I see as trainees general attitude to and engagement with the course, and their progress. 3) It has been fun but challenging to run two sites and to contribute to and monitor them both equally. I think that, if we do decide to run two different sites next year, we need to decide at a very early stage of the course (or during course planning) what we re going to use them for. 4) I haven t really used either of them much. This is partly because I don t feel I have time, and also because I m not too confident with either of them. Sometimes I just think it s easier to do things on paper or orally as opposed to via a computer. 5) I have personally engaged with Moodle a lot more this year than in previous years and I think I ve really benefitted from it. I think it s been good for the trainees as well. They re learning skills they could use in their own practice, and have a variety of ways to give feedback and express their opinions. It s just a shame that some of them were so unwilling to use them (FB and Moodle). 6) I think that next year, we should maybe be less ambitious about how much we expect trainees to use Moodle and Facebook, and how they use it. I think that one thing we ve learnt is that quite a few of the trainees aren t willing to or interested in using the sites outside of class. This was reflected in the interview, where trainees said that they would ve used Facebook and Moodle if they d been vital to their success on the course. We need to look at ways to do this next year. 7) I feel much more confident about using them both, especially Moodle, and I m looking forward to finding more ways to use them in the next course.

Appendix 11 Results of questionnaire to trainers Questionnaire to trainers 5 respondents 1. How many times a week do you use Moodle? 0-2 3-5 6+ 1

2. How many times a week do you use FB? 0-2 3-5 6+ 3. Have you changed how much you use Moodle? More Less The same 2

4. Have you changed how much you use FB? More Less The same 5. Which do you prefer? Moodle Facebook Neither 3

6. Why? I m more familiar with Moodle and have been using it for longer. I think they both have clear advantages, but trainees seem to prefer Moodle. I ve never used Facebook before and don t feel very confident with it. Moodle is more familiar to me, but I like the fact that trainees can upload their own links to FB and start their own discussions. I find Moodle easier. 7. What do you use Moodle for? Starting forums/discussions 3 respondents Uploading links 4 respondents Uploading documents 5 respondents Other 3 respondents 8. What do you use Facebook for? Starting forums/discussions 2 respondents Uploading links 3 three respondents Uploading documents 0 (can t be done) Other 4 respondents 9. Do you have any suggestions for next year? Try and find ways to get all trainees on board Decide exactly how we re going to use them and have a team consensus Decide if we need two and why Be realistic about how much engagement we expect from all participants trainers and trainees Get everyone using it 4
