ATRIUM STUDIO Balland Lane Ashburton Devon TQ13 7EW Designing the future together Tel: 01364 655399 Website: www.atrium-studio.co.uk Email: enquiries@atrium-studio.co.uk Principal: Matt Messias 3rd March 2017 Issue 21 ATRIUM STUDIO SCHOOL NEWSLETTER One of my favourite easy read books is Rhinoceros Success by Scott Alexander. It claims to unlock the secret to charging full speed towards every opportunity! Rhinos are passionate, intense and focused. Rhinos are able to see where they want to go and start charging, knocking down any obstacles that get in their way. Rhinos get things done. Whilst we do not want students snorting furiously, stampeding around the school smashing into tables and knocking over other students and staff, we do encourage them to take risks, develop leadership qualities, take the initiative and focus on everything required to become a success. One way that we do this is through our projectbased learning approach within many subjects, where students learn to problem-solve and deal with real-life scenarios. We also do not allow students to graze - no milling around, watching life pass them by, and hoping that their mediocrity will not be noticed. When students do underachieve in subjects, teachers often provide opportunities for them to improve their learning and understanding via intervention and support sessions. A number of students improved their recent Maths test result after lunchtime support sessions, and students in English will be given a similar opportunity. We hope that you will continue to support us in our endeavours to enable your children to get the best possible examination results that they can; providing them with a springboard to future success in whatever careers they choose. Success is not easy - it requires lots of hard work, adaptable thinking, desire and persistence. Let us charge forward together through the jungle like a Rhino, overcoming problems, running full speed into opportunities! All charging together. Updating Contact Details We try to maintain accurate records of parent and carer contact details, so we can communicate with you as easily and swiftly as possible. We are only able to do this, however, if you inform us of any changes to your email/ home addresses and telephone numbers. 1. You will always find me in the past. I can be created in the present, but the future can never taint me. What am I? 2. What is harder to catch the faster you run? 3. How can the number four be half of five? Answers in the next Newsletter! If your details have changed recently, kindly let us know by emailing mtaylor@atrium-studio.co.uk. Parent View gives you the chance to tell Ofsted in complete confidence what you think about Atrium Studio: from the quality of teaching to dealing with poor behaviour. The survey can be completed at any time - you don t have to wait until the school is being inspected. Visit https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/ It s easy to register and answer the survey. Just click on Give your views now, enter your email address and indicate whether you are a parent or carer. Then select the school - and complete the survey. You ll also have an opportunity to do this at our Year 9 Parents Evening on Thursday 16th March. Answers to previous Brain Teasers: Q. What number should appear next in this sequence: 2, 6, 14, 30, 62, 126,? A. The difference in between the numbers is 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. The next number must therefore be 128 bigger. (254) Q. Rearrange the letters of the name SOCRATES to give two other words. All eight letters must be used in both words. What are they? A. COARSEST and COASTERS Year 9 Enrichment Week 17th - 21st July Our Year 9s are already getting excited about all the fun activities we ve planned for them during Enrichment Week! These include trips to two adventure parks and an open-air museum, two nights full-board accommodation in the beautiful city of Bath, an entertaining (and not too scary!) ghost tour and a day at Westonsuper-Mare beach. We re very grateful to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for their generous funding, which has enabled us to reduce the total cost for each student to 135.00. Please note that the non-refundable deposit of 40 must be paid either via ParentPay, cash/cheque or over the telephone by 31st March. If you have any issues about payment for Enrichment Week, please contact Reception as soon as possible.

Coach s Corner Here are some more helpful tips from Mr Westaway. This week, he shows us how to establish a Growth Mindset. Have you ever said, "I can't do this?" The answer is most likely Yes. Is this thought pattern limiting your potential? Holding you back? Establishing a Growth Mindset will help ensure that you are making the most of your opportunities and allowing yourself to grow. Try this: INSTEAD OF I give up It s good enough This is too hard I made a mistake I ll never be that smart Plan A didn t work My friend can do it - I ll copy from them THINK... I ll try a new approach Is this my best work? This may take some time Mistakes are a key part of learning I will learn how to do this There s always a Plan B My friend can do it how can I learn from them? Stover School 3-2 Atrium Studio School Football Report Stover School VS Atrium Studio FC 28/2/17 On a blustery February afternoon, Atrium Studio FC travelled to Stover School for their first Football Friendly of the season. In their white and green strip, Stover kicked off the first half up a sloping pitch. Atrium Studio FC s team, in yellow, began with Adam in goal; a back four of Michael, Harry, Bernard and Will; Alex, Archie and Beck in the midfield; Morgan and Luke as wingers; and Reuben upfront. Aiden and Jude made up the squad, starting as subs. The sides looked equal from the beginning. Stover scored first, with some intricate passes cutting through the Atrium defence and finishing in the bottom left corner. 1 0 to Stover! Atrium responded within minutes, and Beck placed the ball in the top left corner. With some outstanding finishing by the attacking midfielder, the score was 1 1 after 13 minutes. Atrium s second goal was soon scored again by Beck: a terrific kick which swept the ball past the Stover Keeper, who had no chance to keep it out. Atrium now in the lead, 1 2. Just before close of the first half, Stover scored again. During the second half, with the score at 2-2, Atrium FC were challenged but undeterred by the wind and sloping pitch. They threw themselves wholeheartedly into the last few minutes, but Stover scored again. The game finished with a very respectable score of 3 2. However, Atrium undoubtedly triumphed with many good performances and two great goals. Our thanks go to Stover School for hosting, and welcoming us for this close and competitive match. I can feel a rematch in the air Mr Westaway

Please report all absences by 9am at: absencereporting@atrium-studio.co.uk. Thank you for your co-operation. Atrium Studio Endeavour Award for Student of the Fortnight We believe it s important to celebrate achievements. Every fortnight, a member of staff nominates a student who has shown impressive levels of commitment, progress, willingness and consideration for others. This week Mr Axford, our Teacher of History, has chosen Olly from Year 9. Well done, Olly! Students share fragments of their learning - aka Love Our Learning (LOL): LOVE OUR LEARNING (LOL) I ve nominated Olly for his unflinching enthusiasm for the subject, his positivity, great effort with his recent project, and his understanding of the course so far. I love our Art lessons because they re fun and I get to work with mediums I haven t experienced before. We can also build and create models from our own designs. Bethany, Year 10 Olly Contact Us We hope you ll always feel free to contact us with any queries, concerns or feedback. Our Reception office is open from 8am until 6pm (4pm on Fridays).
