OUR PLACE ST AIDAN S SCHOOL Term 4 Week 6 17/11/16 STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2016 NO STAFF WILL BE ON THE SCHOOL SITE ON THIS DAY

If we teach today s students as we taught yesterday s. we rob them of tomorrow John Dewey 1859-1952

Using the inspiration of Rembrandt s Return of the Prodigal Son, the Diocese s Institute for Mission prepared a gift marking the 30th year of the diocese and as a gesture during the end of the Year of Mercy. The Mercy Year now sends us into the world as a people joy-filled and more convinced of what the Father wished his older son in the Gospel parable to know: All I have is yours!

All I have is yours! The parable in Luke s Gospel is unfinished. We don t know if the older son becomes vulnerable enough to really receive the truth of the Father s words into his heart: All I have is yours! But in Rembrandt s painting, that older son watches as the Father, having being so wounded by the reckless younger son, nevertheless images this ultimate truth of God s selfless embrace. Indeed, the returning younger son, in his deep need, is now able to receive all that the Father has and all that the Father is for him! It was both a pleasure and an honour to be part of the team that helped organise the Way of Mercy project. During last Sunday s mass at St Patrick s Cathedral, Most Reverend Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv DD, delivered a moving homily, which challenged each person to continue the legacy that Pope Francis held dear to his heart. Even though the official year of Mercy came to a close, we are encouraged to continue the acts of mercy for years to come.

Year of Mercy Prayer Dear God, Thank you for never failing to wait for each of us to come back home to you. You greet us with a loving embrace and you are always ready to forgive. Help me to be more like you; to really enjoy freely loving and being merciful to my family, friends and school peers. Like the father in the painting, you also tell each us All I have is yours. Teach me to see everything I have as a gift: my life, my house, my loved ones, my gifts and especially your love. Sometimes I am the prodigal son or daughter running back to you when I have done something wrong, and sometimes I am the older brother jealous of others. But you love me no matter which one I am, you love me as I am. I pray to remember that I am always loved by your strong and gentle hands, and your merciful heart. You are mercy and I hope to be a face of mercy in the world today. Amen

Parent Helpers for 2017 Are you interested in being a parent helper in the classroom in 2017? We would like to invite parents who would be interested in helping in the classroom to a literacy and numeracy training afternoon. A reminder to all parents in our community - if you happen to have any issue with another child in the school you must not directly approach the child. All issues must be addressed through either the class teacher or the school leadership team. This is for the protection of all of the children and yourself. Thank you. We all know the importance of reading for literacy development and the impact a prolonged break, like the Christmas holidays, can have on READING advancement, particularly for vulnerable readers.

These summer holidays, Greg Whitby, our Executive Director of Schools, will once again be launching the Summer Reading Challenge and encouraging all students to read, read, read! Students can read anything they like to enter the challenge, whether it s a comic, play, piece of poetry, book, e-book or graphic novel. This year we have made the challenge easier to enter by removing the minimum number of books to read and provided students with more chances of winning a prize. How to enter: It s simple! Students just need to read something they enjoy and write in 50 words or less why they loved it. The more material a student reads, the more times they can enter the reading challenge and the more chances they have of winning one of four ipad minis. Entries close at 5pm on 7 February 2016. Terms and Conditions can be found at www.parra.catholic.edu.au

2017 Parramatta Diocesan Team Sport Trials Currently the WINTER Sports of AFL, FOOTBALL, HOCKEY, NETBALL, RUGBY LEAGUE, RUGBY UNION & TOUCH FOOTBALL are open and registrations close on Friday 3 rd February as these trials will be held in early 2017. All SUMMER sport registrations are closed. Any Primary students enrolled in Year 5 and 6 in 2017 are invited to participate in the Parramatta Diocesan Team Sport Trials during Term One/Two in 2017. It is important to note that these trials are generally for those children who display an above average ability and/or have representative experience in their chosen sport. While teams are open in age it is strongly recommended that only children of a representative standard in Years 5 & 6 in 2017 be invited to attend. Parramatta Diocesan trials will be held in the following sports: *AFL (boys), Football (B&G), Hockey (B&G), Netball (girls), Rugby League (11yrs & Opens), Rugby Union (boys), & Touch(B&G). For the sports of Diving & Golf nominations are through the CSSS website. To be eligible for selection for these trials an Online Team Registration Form must be completed that can be accessed via the website www.primarysportparra.catholic.edu.au.this online form is an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST for the 2017 Parramatta Diocesan Primary Sport Team trials. Parents may complete this form to attend a selection trial. One form is to be completed per child, per individual sport. Each sport has its own criteria therefore, it is imperative that the correct form is completed. Please note that your online registration is an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ONLY and MUST be approved by the child's school. In order for the child to attend the nominated trial or event this may come down to the discretion of the school as to who is selected to attend the trial. In some sports only 2 students per school can be nominated. All fields and especially Representative Experience MUST be completed. Under no circumstances will a child be eligible to trial if the Online Registration Form has not been completed and approved by the school by the closing date. Kind Regards, Margaret Primary Sport Teaching Educator Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta

Attendance St Aidan s follows the Parramatta Diocesan guidelines in regards to attendance. School attendance is compulsory for every school age student. If your child is away a note explaining the absence is required. There is also provision on our school website www.staidansrootyhill.catholic.edu.au for absentee notes to be completed and then emailed to the school. Absenteeism Attendance Rate Educational Risk Days absent per year Long term absence (over 10 years) Regular 90% or more Low 20 days or less 1 year or less Emerging 80%-89% Medium Between 20 and 40 1-2 years Chronic 70%-79% High Between 40 and 60 2-3 years Complex 69% or less Severe 60 days or more 3 years plus The Catholic Schools Office Diocese of Parramatta has required an attendance target of 93% or higher for every student. If your child has had more than the expected number of days deemed acceptable then the following process will occur. The school office will contact you in regards to your child s absentee rate. This will be followed with a letter stating that you were contacted. If the attendance is still low you will be contacted for a student attendance meeting discussing how to improve your child s attendance at school. This is a government driven initiative and must be taken seriously. Each case is different and some children suffer from sickness and also parents take children for extended holidays. Please be aware that this will also mean the process needs to be followed. If you have any questions please phone the office for clarification.
