Cleanse Your Hearts Booklet Catholic Schools Week Chalk Day Today Show Dear Parents and Carers Palm Sunday 20 th March, is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because at the Church we receive palm fronds which we use to participate in the enactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. A week later, Christ would rise from the dead on the first Easter. Mr Mark Geerligs Principal St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Parish Parish Priest Fr. Catholic Schools Week What a busy week we had last week Catholic Schools Week. Monday started with a whole school prayer upstairs followed by each class presenting an item relating to their work on Literacy. The theme for CSW was I Belong, You Belong, We Belong. At catholic schools it is always about being part of a wider family group. Today Show Late on Tuesday afternoon the school was notified that the 8:10am Channel Nine Today Show weather cross over at Scenic World was going to change to 6:40am. Using Facebook, Skoolbag and by texting each family, 30 students and their parents arrived at Scenic World by about 6:30am with the live appearance of our school at about 6:40am. Although it was a very brief appearance on the TV, it was certainly an interesting start to the morning. It is great to see the promotion of the Blue Mountains throughout Australia. Our Facebook post of the video Mrs Byrnes took of the students working on their sculptural pieces while Steve Jacobs read the weather, has been shared by 11 other people, viewed by more than 1,200 people and reached more than 3,800 people. Canberra Excursion At 7:30am on Wednesday morning the Stage 3 students gathered with their parents to start their exciting Canberra excursion. It is always wonderful to hear from organisations when they compliment our students on their behaviour, manners and involvement. All of our students were very well behaved and the teachers on the excursion were very proud to accompany them for the 3 days. The Mint, The War Memorial, Parliament House, Old Parliament House, National Museum of Australia, Questacon, Electoral Centre and the CSIRO were all wonderful places to visit. The school acknowledges the funding and support of the Australian Government through the PACER (Parliament and Civics Education Rebate) contribution. Care in the Driveway Parents are reminded they are not to drive in the school driveway/ staff parking area under any circumstances during the times of 8am 3.15pm. This is to ensure the safety of all children, parents and siblings. In the case of the extreme weather as we witnessed on Friday, parents can call the school and ask for their child/ren to remain for a short period of time until the adverse conditions have passed. Parents are asked to collect their children from the school grounds at afternoon dismissal and supervise them out of the school grounds. Care is also required whilst walking along the school driveway and staff parking area as this is a shared driveway with our Priest Father Ted and delivery drivers who may need to come and go during these hours.
