How to revise effectively 1) No Cramming (spaced practice) a. Make a plan b. Small chunks of study c. Revisit topics 1 day/1 week/1 month 2) Switch (interleaving) a. Switch between topics in one subject when studying it b. Don t switch too quickly c. Change the order of the topics next time you revisit them 3) Ask, explain & Connect (elaboration) a. Make a list of ideas you have to know in your subject b. Create how and why questions for your topics & answer them c. Reread your class notes/revision materials to see what you can add 4) Examples (concrete examples) a. Take abstract ideas and turn them into something real/concrete you can understand b. Make sure your examples are accurate and relevant 5) Words & visuals (dual coding) a. Use words and images to reinforce learning b. Take class notes and turn them into a visual c. Take a visual and make notes from it 6) Recall what you know (retrieval practice) a. Write down all you can recall about a topic b. Do this some time after the lesson/revision session c. Check with your books/notes what you have missed out d. Focus your learning on what you don t know e.
