International Admissions was added to the division in October, 2012 and has begun developing a targeted international recruitment strategy. GEO is involved with special international initiatives at UNM including scholarships and special programs. Other activities of GEO involve linking the international population with the campus and Albuquerque community, planning activities and events, assisting international students and scholars in their transition to life in New Mexico, and providing the same assistance to domestic students embarking on a study abroad experience.

SECTION - I INTERNATIONAL STUDENT STATISTICS 3

International Student Statistics Fall 2017 International Statistics Background Information These statistics represent a snapshot of the international student population at the University of New Mexico taken in the Fall 2017 semester and are largely the same as those reported to Open Doors, the national survey published by the Institute of International Education (IIE). For purposes of this report International students includes 4 groups enrolled at UNM for the fall 2017 semester coming from abroad: 1) academic degree-seeking students on non-immigrant visas, 2) all intensive English students enrolled in the UNM CELAC program, 3) all full-time exchange/guest students here for a regular UNM semester pursuant to an agreement, and 4) non-degree certificate program students. Short-term program students who are not at UNM for a regular semester are not included in this report. Each student is only counted in one group in this report. For example, if a student is enrolled primarily as an Exchange/Guest student, but is taking intensive English classes, she is only included in the Exchange numbers and not in the intensive English numbers. Students on practical training are shown in the first chart only. These students have been authorized by an international advisor at UNM to engage in work in their field following completion of their program of study. Practical training students are still on F or J visas sponsored by UNM, but are typically no longer attending UNM as full-time students. Please note that these practical training students are not included in any other statistics in this report. A separate report on international students newly enrolling for Fall 2017 can be requested from the Global Education Office or viewed on our website at: geo.unm.edu. For more information, contact Linda Melville, Director, International Student and Scholar Services, Global Education Office, 2120 Mesa Vista Hall, Telephone 277-4032, E-mail: lmelvill@unm.edu. Observations The total number of enrolled international students decrease by 4.48% over fall 2016 Changes over last year (by level): Undergraduate students increased 9.52%; Graduate students decreased 8.37% (13.44% decrease in Master s students and 4.91% decrease in Doctoral students); Intensive English students - decreased 18.18%; Practical training students (students on post completion work permission) - increased 20.08%; Exchange/Guest students decreased 10%; Certificate students increased 50% (from 4 to 6 students) Over the last five years (Fall 2017 compared with Fall 2013), there has been 79.51% increase in the number of undergraduate students, 20.21% increase in graduate students (32.66% increase in Master s students and 13.60% increase in Doctoral students), 28.84% decrease in the exchange student population, 40.57% decrease in the Intensive English student population. Of all International students enrolled at UNM for Fall 2017, 53.91% were Graduates, 28.75% were Undergraduates, 11.95% were Exchange students, 0.47% were Certificate Program students and 4.92% were Intensive English students International students comprised 4.87% of the total UNM population (11.76% of all graduates at UNM and 1.95% of all undergraduates at UNM) International students at UNM come from 104 countries; the top 5 countries represented at UNM this year are: China, India, Nepal, United Kingdom, and Iran, respectively In terms of region of origin, Asia has the largest representation at 51.09% of international students 39.14% of international students receive more than half of their funding from UNM 60.86% of international students at the University of New Mexico receive the majority of their support from sources outside of UNM. Thus, international students who pay non-resident rates contribute a considerable number of tuition dollars to UNM each year. Based on reported sources of income and tuition-residency status, the total amount these students spent on tuition this year was approximately 19.4 million dollars. 4
