Online Assignments for Teachers ii

Online Assignments for Teachers Teachers have the ability to make an assignment available online in Student Access. To enable an Online Assignment, the teacher needs to enter the assignment questions and answers and mark the assignment to be shown online. The student can then work on the assignment in Student Access. Upon completion by the student, the teacher grades the assignment within the Gradebook. Note: Teachers will need security access for this option, in addition to the setup below. Creating an Online Assignment 1. From the Gradebook Main Screen, click Assignments dropdown and select Add Assignment. 2. Complete the main Assignment information, just as you would for any assignment. 3. Verify the Post to Student Access is checked. 4. Next select Create Online Assignment from the Options dropdown. 5. Enter Assignment Setup Options, as desired: a. Enter the Default Points per Question. b. Optional: Enter any additional Description for the Online Assignment. c. Optional: check Randomize Questions - orders questions in a random order for each student. d. Optional: Check Override Multiple Choice/Matching Answer Lettering allows a user to alter the letter schema from A-J to user-selected options. 6. Enter Student/Family Access Options, as desired: a. Check Do not make Available in Student Access Online Assignments if you do not want the assignment to currently display in Student Access. b. Enter the Start Date and Time. c. Enter the Stop Date and Time. d. Enter the number of Questions per Page. e. Enter Do not Show Results until Date and Time. f. Check Auto Score and Post to Gradebook, if only Multiple Choice, True/False, and Matching questions will be used. g. Check Show Correct Answers, if you want the students to see the correct answers for the questions they answer incorrectly. 7. Click Save and Add Questions. a. Select the Question Type Multiple Choice, True/False, Matching, Short Answer, or Essay. b. Enter the Question. Note: Use the View Style Toolbar to access options for Font Style and Size, add images or links, and use other customizable options. c. Optional: Enter Extra Content additional information that will assist the student in understanding and answering the question. Note: The View Style Toolbar features are also available here. d. Modify the Points for Questions, if desired. Note: The Points assigned to a Matching question will be split among the number of matches created. e. Optional: Add an Attachment(s) to the question. f. Enter the Answer or Answer Choices for the Question. i. Optional: Add an Attachment(s) to the answer choices available for Multiple Choice, and Matching Choices and Matches questions. g. Click Save and Add Another to continue adding questions, or Save and Back when all questions have been entered. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 2 of 15

8. If Standards Benchmarks are attached to this course, the user can attach standards to each question. a. Expand the arrow next to the first assignment question. b. In the Benchmarks section, click the Add Benchmarks link. c. Check the box(ex) for the desired Benchmark(s). d. Click Save e. Expand the arrow next to each additional assignment question, and repeat steps b d. 9. When finished adding the Online Assignment, click Save and Back. 10. Click Save and Back to save the assignment and return to the Main Screen. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 3 of 15

Identifying an Online Assignment in the Gradebook An Online Assignment can be identified in the teacher s Assignment List by a checkmark in the OA column Path: Main Screen\Assignments dropdown\list Assignments. Hovering over the Assignment Header information on the Main Screen, the fly over will also identify an Online Assignment: Hiding an Online Assignment from a Student Assignments that are made available online for a class can be hidden for specific students. To hide an Online Assignment for a specific student: 1. Click on the header of the assignment. 2. Click Score Online Assignment. 3. Highlight the desired student. 4. Click Hide Assignment for Student. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 4 of 15

5. Click Yes to the confirmation message. Once it is hidden, when the student or guardian logs onto Family/Student Access, they do not see the assignment. To make a hidden Online Assignment available for the student again, click on the header of the assignment, click Score Online Assignment, highlight the student, and click Show Assignment Online for Student. The system displays a confirmation. Click Yes. 6. Click on the header of the assignment. 7. Click Score Online Assignment. 8. Highlight the student. 9. Click Show Assignment Online for Student. 10. Click Yes to the confirmation message. By selecting the Reports button, the user can choose to print a Hard Copy of Blank Online Assignment for students for whom the assignment is hidden. Taking an Online Assignment In Student Access, each student will be able to access and complete the Online Assignment within the date range set on the assignment details. Note: Guardians in Family Access are able to see that an Online Assignment exists and see the results, but will be unable to take the assignment for the student. Once the student has selected Save and Complete Assignment, they can view the results from the Past Assignments hyperlink, if the assignment is set to auto-score or the teacher has scored the assignment and posted the results to Student Access. Scoring an Online Assignment Auto Scored Online Assignments Auto Scored assignments will automatically populate in the Gradebook after the student selects Save and Complete Assignment. The teacher has the ability to modify the score, if desired, by manually scoring the assignment. Manually Scoring Online Assignments Short answer and essay assignments will need to be scored by the teacher. The scoring options for short answer or essay Online Assignments are only available by clicking the Assignment Header on the Gradebook Main Screen for the desired assignment. The teacher now has access to Score Online Assignment. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 8 of 15

The Status of Assignment column will assist the teacher to know who has Completed the assignment and is ready for scoring, and those who are In Progress or have not started the assignment. In Progress have answered at least one question, and either timed out or clicked Save and Complete Later Completed have finished the Online Assignment and clicked Save and Complete Assignment Graded have completed the Online Assignment, and the software has autoscored the assignment or the teacher has manually graded the assignment. Hidden a student for which the teacher chose to remove the assignment from Student Access. 1. Highlight the desired student, then select Score Online Assignment. 2. As questions are scored, teachers have the ability to write a 50 character comment regarding the question response. If the teacher chooses to display the results in Family/Student Access, the scores and comments will display for the guardians/student. 3. For Short Answer and Essay questions, the teacher can assess the number of Points Earned for the student response. 4. Select Post Score to Gradebook when finished scoring the assignment. 5. The software will now allow the teacher to add a Special Code, No Count or Missing designators, and a Comment attached to the overall Assignment. Be sure to check the Show Results in Student Access, should you wish the score results to be posted in Family and Student Access, in addition to the score. 6. Click Save and Close to return to the Scoring screen or Return to Scoring to continue scoring this student. Mass Post Scores to Gradebook After an Online Assignment has closed according to the Stop Date and Time, the teacher can use the Mass Post Scores to Gradebook utility to post scores for the Online Assignment for all students in the class to Gradebook. If an Online Assignment contains an essay or short answer question, you still have to score each student s assignment and assign a score for these questions before you perform this utility. If you do not assign a score for an essay or short answer question, it is treated as a 0 (zero) and will negatively impact the assignment grade that is posted to Gradebook. 1. On the Gradebook Main Screen, click the header of the assignment you wish to grade. 2. Click Score Online Assignment. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 11 of 15

3. Click Mass Post Scores to Gradebook. If you do not see this button, check to see that the current date and time is after the Stop Date listed on the top portion of the screen. 4. Mark the desired selections: a. Select Mark to Show Results in Student Access? if you wish to allow all students and guardians to view results for each specific question. b. Select Post Online Assignment Score to Gradebook? If this is unchecked, scores are NOT posted to Gradebook. i. Select Override Existing Gradebook Scores? if you wish to overwrite any existing scores in Gradebook that have already been assigned to the students for this assignment. ii. Select Score Uncompleted Online Assignments as 0 and Missing in Gradebook if you wish to post a score of 0 and mark the Missing checkbox for all students who have not completed the assignment. iii. Note: The Mass Post Scores to Gradebook utility does not affect students who have a status of Hidden for the Online Assignment. For hidden assignment students, you must assign a score for the assignment through another score method in Gradebook. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 12 of 15

5. Click Run. Allowing a Student to Resume an Online Assignment The ability is available to allow a student to resume an Online Assignment for which they have clicked Save and Complete Assignment. This option can be activated for a student that selected the Save and Complete Assignment by mistake, or for a student that needs to redo an assignment. 1. To activate this option for the student, click the Online Assignment header from the Gradebook Main Screen. 2. Click Score Online Assignment. 3. Highlight the desired student, click Allow Student to Resume. Note: Once this button is selected for the student, the assignment will appear again in the Current Assignments list in Student Access, rather than the Past Assignments list. Note: The assignment will only appear in the student s Current Assignments list if the current date is within the Start and Stop range. 4. The feature changes the student s Status from Completed to In Progress. A Word of Caution: Be cautious about when you decide to allow guardians and students to View Results. If given before all students have completed the Online Assignment, correct answers can be shared amongst the class. Online Assignments for Teachers Page 13 of 15

Online Assignment Reports There are four reports available for all Online Assignments. These reports are accessed by clicking an Online Assignment Header, then selecting the Report dropdown. Answer Key This report will provide a paper copy of the answer key for the Online Assignment. Answer Key options: Lines for Essay Questions (0-20) Questions Per Page (0 = fit to page) o Set to Same as Online Assignment Hard Copy of Blank Online Assignment This report will provide a paper copy of the Online Assignment. This would enable the teacher to give the assignment to a student with no access to a computer. Hard Copy of Blank Online Assignment options: Lines for Essay Questions (0-20) Questions Per Page (0 = fit to page) o Set to Same as Online Assignment Online Assignment Analysis Report This report will offer the teacher information on which students got answers to questions correct or incorrect. It will also list the students who have not taken the online assignment. Online Assignment Analysis report options: Only Print Online Assignments that have been Graded and Posted to the Gradebook Print All Students o Exclude Students who have not taken Online Assignment yet Only Print Students who got Answers Correct o Include Students who received partial points on an incorrect answer Only Print Students who got Answers Incorrect o Exclude Students who received partial points on an incorrect answer Only Print Students who have not taken Online Assignment yet Online Assignments for Teachers Page 14 of 15

Student Results This report will provide a paper copy of the Online Assignment, and the answers for the selected students. All students who have completed the assignment are automatically selected, however individual selections can be made. This would enable the teacher to view the student results for this Online Assignment, and provide an opportunity for oneon-one work on needed concepts. Student Results options: Lines for Essay Questions (0-20) Select Different Students Questions Per Page (0 = fit to page) Show Points Earned o Set to Same as Online Assignment Show Teacher Comment Online Assignments with Benchmarks Reports Benchmark Score Results This report will provide an analysis of the scores of students in this class or in all the classes you teach in which you are tracking specified Benchmarks. Student Results options: Print Benchmark(s) Scores for Term Classes to Print for Selected Students Print Benchmark(s) Scores for Date Range o Only Print this Class o Print Classes of this Course where I Benchmarks, select Benchmarks am the Teacher Show the Mean/Median/Mode Page Break by Student Online Assignments for Teachers Page 15 of 15
