CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Adult Continuing Education noncredit certificates at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago offer unique learning opportunities for adult students interested in pursuing an education in contemporary art and design. Programs have been designed to meet the needs of today s working adults interested in developing an art and design practice, exploring new areas of study, or preparing for a variety of educational pursuits. Students enroll in a noncredit certificate to explore a field of interest or prepare for the pursuit of a degree or other credit-based credential to achieve personal and professional goals. Certificate in Studio Art and Design Designed to support individual students immediate creative goals and long-term aspirations, the Certificate in Studio Art and Design reflects SAIC s interdisciplinary art and design curriculum. Requirements (6) Studio: Surface, Space, Time Four electives Critique and Exhibition The sequence of electives can take many forms to suit the individual needs of the adult learner, emphasizing personal enrichment, preparation for further study, and more. Drawing Certificate In the Drawing Certificate, students develop the skills and conceptual foundation necessary to cultivate their art practice, drawing inspiration and context from SAIC s many resources, including the Art Institute of Chicago, an encyclopedic museum that encompasses more than 5,000 years of creative expression from cultures around the world. Fashion Certificate The Fashion Certificate is designed for students interested in artistic and professional training in fashion. Classes are held in the Sage Studios for Fashion Design, where participants hone the technical skills necessary to realize their creative vision as they develop a portfolio of work that can be used for a variety of purposes, including preparation for further study. Inspiration and context are drawn from SAIC s Fashion Resource Center, a unique collection of late 20th- and 21st-century designer garments and accessories representing extreme innovation, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago museum and other SAIC collections and resources. Prerequisite (1) Sewing Techniques: Fundamentals Studio Courses (6) Fashion Medium: Embroidery, Embellishments, and Sewn Elements Figure Drawing for Illustration Sewing Techniques: Above the Waist Patternmaking and Construction: Above the Waist Sewing Techniques: Below the Belt Patternmaking and Construction: Below the Belt Elective (1) Graphic Design Certificate The Graphic Design Certificate is designed for students with an interest in exploring graphic design with an emphasis on print media. Participants employ analog and digital processes and may elect to work across disciplines as they develop a portfolio of work that represents their personal voice and demonstrates the technical, critical, and analytical skills required of the field. Note: Students enrolled in the Graphic Design Certificate should have access to a Mac or PC computer with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop installed. Before starting this program, students should feel comfortable navigating the directory structure and creating, deleting, renaming, and moving files and directories without assistance. Interior Design Certificate The noncredit certificate in Interior Design emphasizes the study of interior architecture, with requirements including Introduction to Architecture, Digital Design: Objects + Space, and Hand Drafting. The program also exposes students to contemporary design concepts, trends, and applications addressed in Design Matters and Introduction to Interior Design. While interior decor will be addressed, it is not the primary focus. This program is ideal for those interested in developing a portfolio to accompany college admissions applications, and individuals wishing to undertake personal projects. Students interested in making a career change may opt to pursue the noncredit certificate for the purpose of learning more about the field or in preparation for pursuing a degree. Note: Students enrolled in the Interior Design Certificate should have access to a Mac or PC computer.
