COURSE DESCRIPTION IET 51500 Facilities Planning and Management Description The overall planning process for facilities is presented including: space planning; facilities layout; engineering systems integration; site selection; OSHA and EPA compliance; and compliance with ADA requirements. Additionally, topics related to management or organization of the facility function will be discussed including: management functions; how facility management fits into the organization structure; professional conduct and certification of facility professionals; and risk management. These areas of planning are presented in an integrated manner along with different modeling and simulation approaches. COURSE FORMAT MEETING TIME: This course is being delivered completely through the use of Canvas. The course will progress in the same fashion that a classroom course would, with weekly scheduled lectures, homework, etc. so please carefully review the schedule to identify when assignments are due. There may be a few times throughout the semester when we will meet as a class online these times will be announced well in advance and every effort will be made to provide the most accommodating times. Introduction 7 COURSE FORMAT COURSE WEEK: The course week will officially begin on Monday at 8:00a and end at 8:00a on the following Monday. Readings and lecture materials have been assigned for the various weeks the lecture materials are available via Canvas. Assignments for a given week must be submitted via the respective Canvas assignment link before 12:00 midnight EST on the due date. This course syllabus details the material that will be covered by the course and the course schedule. COURSE INFORMATION It is the responsibility of each student to manage their time effectively to meet the schedule requirements and submit coursework on time. Introduction 10 COURSE INFORMATION BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES FOR WEB BASED CLASSES 1. Visit the classroom Canvas website every week. 2. Follow the syllabus, reviewing the learning units and readings in the texts as specified. 3. Complete the homework and/or projects by the specified due dates. 4. Participate in the class by contacting the instructor with any questions or clarification of the material. 5. Take exams within the time frame specified. 6. GRADING Graded work for this course will include: (3) Exams 60% final grade Homework 15% final grade Research Paper 25% final grade Grading Scale: Letter Grade A+ A A B+ B B C+ C C F Minimum % 98 93 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 0 Introduction 13 GRADING Grading philosophy: A grades will be given for outstanding, exemplary and exceptional work depicting over and above what is required of the respective project or assignment. Student demonstrates the ability to evaluate, critique and/or design work of exceptional quality. B grades will be given for good work, depicting an above average understanding. Student demonstrates the ability to revise and synthesize work or tasks. C grades will be given for average work or work that solely meets the project criteria without an obvious effort to exceed expectations. Student demonstrates the ability to apply and reproduce work or tasks. Introduction 14 GRADING Grading philosophy: Work that is lacking or deficient will receive an F grade. Students will be given an automatic W (withdrawal) if they drop the class on time according to the Schedule of Classes. No automatic "W" grade will be given after the date specified in the class schedule unless the student is in passing status. An incomplete (I) grade will only be given in exceptional circumstances where the student is in passing status but not able to complete the course requirements due to an excuse which must be formally documented and be acceptable by the University administration Introduction 15 5

GRADING LATE WORK POLICY Late work will be downgraded one letter grade immediately following the due date and time. No work will be accepted 24 hours after these times and dates. Exceptions are given to only those who have pre arranged with the instructor and have provided acceptable documentation. Early communication is imperative and encouraged! Introduction 16 COURSE WORK Ownership of Work Produced in IET 51500 In taking this course you are permitting the instructor to use your work produced in IET 51500 as an example of work done in this class for the purposes of IFMA accreditation, teaching resources, research, publication and promotional material. This may involve the reproduction of your work as well. Should you not be in agreement with this, please notify the instructor immediately. This curriculum for this course and Facilities Management program is based on Learning Objectives from the International Facility Management Association (IFMA). This is the professional organization that accredits top programs in facilities management. The school will be applying for IFMA accreditation during this academic year. Introduction 17 COURSE OUTLINE First week materials will be posted to Canvas on Monday August 24 th Each Monday morning the next week s resources will be posted. No new material will be covered during the week of an exam to allow you to complete homework assignments and prepare for the exam. Exams are online with availability Thursday through Sunday of the exam week. Assignments will be due by midnight on Monday of the week following the text material. Introduction 18 6

COURSE OUTLINE Homework will not be required when we move into the later portion of the semester. You will have a research paper due on a topic related to facilities management which will be due the last week of the semester. The last exam will occur during finals week.
