TEACHING BIRTH-5 YEARS/ BIRTH-12 YEARS BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF QUALITY EDUCATION AND HELP TO NURTURE THE CRITICAL THINKERS OF TOMORROW. The School of Education at Western Sydney University is at the forefront of preparing teachers to work in the technologically rich and diverse environments that are the classrooms and early childhood settings of the 21st century. The Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years/Birth 12 Years) meets the requirements for teaching in prior to school and primary school settings. It has a strong focus on leadership, diversity and social justice, partnerships with families, and communities and research. WHAT YOU LL STUDY Combining practical teaching skills with contemporary approaches and theories, Western Sydney University aims to produce graduates with highly-developed critical thinking and problem solving skills, and the capacity to engage in reflective practice. Students study all curriculum areas and have a range of practical experiences across the early childhood and primary teaching contexts. Students will be required to demonstrate their suitability to teaching. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Master of Teaching (Birth 12 Years) provides you with a teaching qualification relevant to early childhood settings, such as preschool and long day care, and kindergarten to year 6 classes in primary schools. Should you choose to exit with the Master of Teaching (Birth 5 Years) you can work as a teacher or director in early childhood programs, including child care centres and preschools, take on professional roles in resource centres, family support programs and family day care schemes, and work as a consultant in the early childhood field. 2 Western Sydney University

MASTER OF TEACHING (PRIMARY) All children need teachers who have a strong understanding and knowledge of the theories and practices which can create high-quality and engaging classrooms. Our team also recognises that children from diverse and low SES backgrounds are often more in need of a caring, theoretically informed and creative teacher who can engage students in learning experiences of high intellectual quality. The Master of Teaching (Primary) degree brings together these ideas in a program that prepares teachers to be future focused, energetic and enterprising, and ready to work productively for the diversity of students in Sydney's Greater West and beyond. WHAT YOU LL STUDY The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a professional qualifying degree that capitalises upon the detailed subjectspecific knowledge developed through undergraduate studies in compliance with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) subject content requirements for teaching. It is a course that offers intensive and rewarding experiences with the focus on becoming a curriculum specialist teacher in primary schools. Our courses provide a strong background in the learning needs of individual children at different academic levels and from different social and cultural backgrounds. Students are involved in authentic learning experiences across all NSW Key Learning Areas in curriculum units and are encouraged to develop engaging teaching practices in pedagogy units. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Master of Teaching (Primary) is an accredited teaching degree which qualifies graduates to teach in primary schools. The combined degree qualifies graduates as teachers in primary school with a specialisation in an Arts major, such as: Cultural and Social Analysis English History and Political Thought Indigenous Australian Studies International Relations and Asian Studies Islamic Studies Language Linguistics Philosophy Psychological Studies. 4 Western Sydney University

MASTER OF TEACHING (SECONDARY) The Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree helps to prepare individuals with a passion for their particular subject area to be teachers who are confident and skilled education practitioners. Our teaching graduates are able to cater for the wide academic, social, cultural and linguistic diversity of young people in Western Sydney and more broadly throughout NSW, Australia and increasingly the world. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a professional qualifying degree that capitalises on the detailed subjectspecific knowledge developed through undergraduate studies in line with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) subject content requirements for teaching. It is a course that offers intensive and rewarding experiences with the focus on becoming a curriculum specialist teacher in secondary schools. WHAT YOU LL STUDY The Master of Teaching (Secondary) combines a variety of on-campus experiences with field-based and online learning opportunities. Students will be required to demonstrate their suitability for teaching. Units are delivered by highly experienced educators, researchers and practising teachers, who are all experts in their chosen fields. Our approach is to embed teaching practice in all our units, with opportunities for course participants to begin to practice and develop their skills and knowledge as teachers with a particular emphasis upon creativity and innovation. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The dual qualification of an undergraduate degree and postgraduate teaching qualification provides great flexibility. You will be qualified as a secondary school teacher, so you can teach in government and non-government schools in Australia and in most other countries. You could also pursue other career interests in the field of your undergraduate degree, education policy, curriculum development and education administration or even generalist positions, since many of the generic skills of your teaching degree teamwork and leadership, communication and organisation are highly valued by employers. Later on, of course, you could bring that valuable practical experience back into a teaching career. 6 Western Sydney University
