Title Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning Location St Joseph s College, Toowoomba Reports to Principal Classification Assistant Principal Directorate Teaching and Learning Tenure Fixed Term, Full Time (5 year contract) Purpose The Assistant Principal s role is to support the Principal in ensuring excellent teaching and learning in a faith-centred environment. The Assistant Principal works in collaboration with the Principal and other senior leaders to develop and monitor the school s vision and mission and to oversight structures that facilitate the work of both staff and students. The role holder assists the Principal in: Providing leadership in the school community. Providing leadership and management within the school. Providing leadership in any other areas delegated by the Principal. The work of the role holder will be guided by: Jesus Christ and his teachings as understood and passed on by the Catholic Church. Other Catholic Church teachings, principles and values. Relevant legislation, government requirements and best practice. TCS Strategic Plan, Mission, Vision, Policies, Procedures and Guidelines. School strategic plans, policies and procedures. Experience and qualifications Essential Hold or be eligible to hold, registration as a teacher in Queensland. Have a well developed understanding of, commitment to, and support for the values and ethos of the Catholic school and the mission of the Catholic Church. Relevant tertiary qualifications and experience relating to the position. Advanced interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated experience working with the Microsoft suite of products. Thorough knowledge of current and emerging syllabus in a Year 7 to 12 environment. Commit to maintaining currency of professional knowledge and skills, and participation in self and organisational renewal processes. A committed Christian with a strong commitment to Catholic education. Completed (or a commitment to acquire before completion of the first contract cycle), at least six postgraduate units in Theology. These may be in the field of one or

more of Theology, Religious Education, Scripture, Spirituality, Prayer, Liturgy, or Leadership in a Catholic context. (These units may be part of a Graduate Diploma or Masters Qualification). Current teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. Key result areas 3.1 Religious Leadership: 3.1.1 Gives example to the school community of living a Christian life evidenced both in the school context and in a local community. 3.1.2 Fosters the Catholic ethos and identity of the school community, integrating beliefs and values into all facets of school life and learning. 3.1.3 Contributes to spiritual formation of staff and students and leadership in religious education. 3.2 Educative Leadership: 3.2.1 With the principal and other members of the Leadership Team emphasises the centrality of learning and teaching in the life and work of the school. 3.2.2 Facilitates the development, implementation and evaluation of effective pedagogy and curriculum. 3.2.3 Supports and promotes collective responsibility and accountability for student achievement and wellbeing. 3.3 Staff and Community Leadership: 3.3.1 Develops an overall knowledge of the strengths and the needs of staff and organises appropriate professional learning which supports good practice and addresses prioritised needs. 3.3.2 Engages in the efficient and effective management of staff and workplace practices. 3.3.3 Facilitates pastoral care and behaviour support programs which build a positive culture within the school community. 3.4 Organisational Leadership: 3.4.1 Facilitates the alignment of school policies, processes and resources with strategic plans. 3.4.2 Assists with the establishment of efficient systems of data and records interrogation, management and retention. 3.4.3 Supports effective communication and decision making processes. 3.5 Strategic Leadership: 3.5.1 Participates in the strategic development and review of the school priorities and subsequent allocation of resources through school policies and procedures. 3.5.2 Promotes a systemic perspective in contributing to a culture of reflection, selfreview and improvement. 3.5.3 Facilitates quality change through strategic relationships and transparent processes.

Statement of responsibility Functional Responsibilities 4.1 Assists the Principal in providing leadership of the school community. 4.2 Provides significant leadership as part of a dynamic educational ministry and plays an essential role in the learning and development of students. 4.3 Supports and develops staff through regular monitoring, professional learning, collaborative practices and enacting effective employee relations. 4.4 Develops and maintain processes to manage physical and financial resources which effectively deliver the educative programs of the school. 4.5 Works collaboratively and transparently in assisting with the creation of strategic plans and the allocation of resources to enact these. Other Responsibilities The incumbent performs the role cognisant of and in harmony with the vision and mission of TCS. The incumbent will work cooperatively with other key stakeholders both within TCS and external agencies to ensure that services are delivered in a planned, coordinated and strategic manner. The role holder will engage in performance reviews in accordance with TCS policy and procedure. While at work the role holder must: o take reasonable care for his or her own health and safety o take reasonable care that his or her acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons o comply, so far as the role holder is reasonably able, with any reasonable instruction that is given by the person conducting the business or undertaking to allow the person to comply with the Work Health and Safety Act o co-operate with any reasonable policy or procedure of the person conducting the business or undertaking relating to health or safety at the workplace that has been notified to workers Authority limits Authority to act within the role and enact the duties as outlined above is delegated through the School Principal from the Executive Director: Catholic Schools. Reporting and other relationships The Assistant Principal is responsible to the Executive Director: Catholic Schools through the principal or nominated delegate. Significant relationships also exist with other members of the school Leadership Team, teachers and support staff. Duties Statement Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning The following areas list a range of activities in which the Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning might engage while realising, the Principal may add or delete areas of this job description which can enhance the role of assisting the Principal. 3.1 Religious Leadership: Foster the Catholic ethos and identity of the College community, integrating beliefs and values into all facets of school life and learning; Witness to and be active in Parish life; Implement Diocesan guidelines, policies and directives; Support opportunities for Christian community service and social justice; Support staff spiritual and theological formation. 3.2 Educative Leadership: Articulate the College s vision and direction for teaching and learning to the College Community educational vision with a focus on the student as a learner and person. Facilitate the alignment of all teaching and learning initiatives with the College strategic plan. Ensure all teaching staff are informed about contemporary evidence-based pedagogies and lead teaching staff in their development in determined priority areas. Be active in classroom observations and walk throughs and relay appropriate feedback to teaching staff. Analyse student outcomes (academic, engagement and well-being) to determine school-wide priority areas relating to teaching and learning. Develop close working relationships with each Middle Leader to support them in planning and implementing the Academic Programs and school-wide teaching and learning initiatives in their department. Support the development of a contemporary, holistic, high quality curriculum. Support the successful planning and running of programs for the senior school according to QCAA Syllabi and Policy. Support and promote collective responsibility and accountability for student achievement and well-being. Support high expectations and standards and the systematic monitoring of student learning. Ensure that students receive appropriate recognition for their academic achievements. Support appropriate assessment, reporting and evaluation processes. Support the Assistant Principal Curriculum with the Subject Selection process involving staff, students and parents and the establishment of elective lines for Years 9 12. Work collaboratively with Assistant Principal Curriculum and Middle Leaders.

Keep the College Principal informed about curriculum matters affecting staff. 3.3 Staff and Community Leadership: Work in close collaboration with other leadership team members to form an effective team. Contribute to a culture of reflection, self-review and improvement. Support and foster effective employee relations. Provide pastoral support to students and staff. Engage in effective staff developmental learning and performance management, including monitoring, review and appraisal. Support appropriate learning programs for staff to affirm good practice and address needs. Work collaboratively with the Staff Mentor to develop teachers and manage teacher accreditation through the AITSL proficiency/accreditation process. Work collaboratively with the Middle Leader of Student Services as required. Support Student Services with the implementation of special programs. Work with Principal in the process of performance appraisal of Middle Leaders and their re-appointment. Communicate expectations to staff and provide support and guidance when necessary. Maintain a presence at school occasions and functions and a highly visible presence around the school. Work closely with staff members to enable them to apply their strengths, gifts and talents to enhance the school through the setting of appropriate goal setting ensuring staff growth. Develop partnerships and ensure appropriate communication with parents. Conduct academic interviews, particularly for students not experiencing academic success. Communicate effectively and resolve issues in a positive manner though the use of the Positive Psychology framework. Support pastoral care and behaviour support programs which build a positive culture within the College community through the embedding of Positive Psychology initiatives. 3.4 Organisational Leadership: Support quality change processes to create an innovative, visible learning environment and positive Teaching and Learning practices. Oversee the use of relevant data to review and renew systems within the school in response to changing needs and contexts. Accept responsibility for specific tasks associated with being a Visible Learning school and links with other school teaching and learning initiatives. Lead the Visible Learning processes and work collaboratively with Visible Learning coaches.

Promote the embedding of the Professional Learning Team culture at the College. Through the use of data, work with staff at all levels to maintain a high quality curriculum, effective instructional practices and effective and just classroom management strategies. Work with Middle Leaders Curriculum and Pastoral, in monitoring students academic performance and well-being. By analysing data, ensure that appropriate Positive Education strategies are engaged to remedy student issues and keep parents informed. Assist the Principal to develop and maintain processes to manage physical, human and financial resources in order to deliver effective educational programs within the College based upon the College Strategic Plan and Annual Action Plan. Coordinate the development of the College timetable. Coordinate efficient systems of data and records management and retention through the College administration system. Support the organisation and running of the QCAA internal and external assessment requirements and transfer of data. 3.5 Strategic Leadership: Work with the Principal and Leadership Team in establishing, implementing and reviewing the College s strategic directions. Use data to inform strategic planning to grow Teaching and Learning practices across the College as well as develop a professional learning plan for all staff.
