Our faculty. Our students. Our staff. We are here to innovate and explore. To make things better. We are here to shine a light. A light on the past, the present, the future. On society and the individual. On the great and the small. The University of California shines a light on what is possible.

uc system Ten Campuses No Boundaries For almost 150 years, the University of California has educated the brightest minds and helped California become a beacon of innovation. Our campuses routinely are ranked among the best in the world. But our reach extends beyond campus borders. Our people connect the dots, exchange ideas, make advancements and unlock the secrets and mysteries of the universe every day. They engage local governments and underserved schools, protect the environment and push the boundaries of space. And it adds up to an immense direct impact on the economy. UC supports 430,000 jobs, contributes over $46 billion to the California economy each year and matches every $1 of California resources with over $2.27 in out-of-state funding. at a glance uc berkeley uc davis uc irvine ucla uc merced uc riverside uc san diego uc san francisco uc santa barbara uc santa cruz On campus 10 campuses 16 health professional schools 150 academic disciplines 600 graduate degree programs Off campus 200 study-abroad programs 20,000 UC extension courses 200 Cooperative Extension agricultural advisers statewide 05

research The Research Behind Tomorrow California s world-leading industries biotechnology, digital media, telecommunications computers and semiconductors, environmental technologies grew out of UC-based research. And many of the marvels of everyday life, from sweeter strawberries to the shot that protects you from the flu, are the product of UC research. The California Institutes for Science and Innovation a unique research partnership between industry, the state of California and UC attack large-scale issues in information technology, nanotechnology, energy systems and more. Other multicampus programs focus on transportation and the environment, water, solar technologies, socio-economic issues, and the arts and humanities. And UC s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources transforms agriculture developing better produce varieties, fighting pests and improving farming techniques. at a glance Most patents of any U.S. university UC research produced an average of four inventions a day in 2010 More than 500 startups directly founded on UC technologies 06

people As Pioneering as California Itself A university is only as great as its people. And ours are Nobel laureates, Medal of Science winners, gold medalists, Oscar winners, MacArthur Genius Award winners. They are the drivers behind innovations in biotechnology, computer science, art and agriculture. And they bring that knowledge, that greatness, directly to the classroom. From all backgrounds, ethnicities and incomes, UC attracts the best and brightest. UC undergraduates have all worked to be in the top 12.5 percent of high school graduates. And for a lot of them, that hasn t been easy. Forty-one percent of 2011 s admitted freshmen are the first in their families to attend college. UC s graduate students who play a key role in UC s teaching and research mission go on to make up 7 percent of all Ph.D.s nationwide, every year. And more than three-quarters of the students have a job or postdoc placement by the time they leave our campuses. at a glance 1.6 million living alumni More than 190,000 employees 57 Nobel Prize recipients Nearly 235,000 students UNIVERSITY 11 OF CALIFORNIA 11

National Laboratories Beyond the Beyond Confirming the big bang. Protecting national security. Discovering dark energy. Creating a star. Managed by UC on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the national labs probe, explore and unlock the mysteries of the universe. Here on earth, they turn plants into fuel, reveal the good and bad of cholesterol, and unveil the secrets of the human genome. at a glance Lawrence Berkeley Federal funding: $853 million Economic impact: $700 million Los Alamos Federal funding: $2.2 billion Economic impact: $2.9 billion Lawrence Livermore Federal funding: $1.5 billion Economic impact: $447 million UC has managed Lawrence Berkeley National Lab since its inception in 1931. UC has also been involved in the management of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory since their inceptions and now is a partner in limited liability corporations that oversee those national security labs. 12

health A Healthier Future Our health sciences training program is the nation s largest. We train nearly half of California s medical students and residents. We re a key part of California s medical safety net 40 percent of UC patients are uninsured or covered by Medi-Cal. We re also doing the research in high-priority health issues like HIV/ AIDS, breast cancer and tobacco-related disease that will enhance the lives of people across the country and around the world. Added together it s an enterprise that s saving lives and improving health for all Californians. at a glance Five medical centers 10 hospitals 14,000 students 16 health professional schools 3.8 million outpatient visits 17

public value It s About Illumination We re helping prepare California s students long before they reach our campuses by enriching their grade school studies and training their teachers and principals. Our agricultural science equips farmers and gardeners alike with better ways to grow. The thousands of acres of pristine habitat we protect enable us to understand how to save our most precious natural resources. Our museums, galleries and concert halls showcase the world s best artists, performers and thinkers. Our botanical gardens inspire the greenest of thumbs. Aquariums and observatories offer enlightening glimpses of the ocean deep and the distant cosmos. Anyone everyone is welcome. And many cheer the Blue and Gold be they Bear, Bruin, Bobcat or Banana Slug. From the very first class in 1869 to this very moment, the University of California has provided the sparks of illumination that have fired imaginations, industries, California and the world. What is born here ensures our best days remain ahead of us. Let there be light. 18
