Canary Islands The ULL is located in Tenerife, one of the seven islands that integrate the Canarian archipelago, which can be found northeast of the African continent, in the Atlantic Ocean. The Archipelago is one of the seventeen autonomous communities that constitute the Spanish State and is divided into two provinces, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Tenerife is a volcanic island, originally formed in the late Tertiary Age, with a wide variety of landscapes (pine and laurel forests, semi-desert areas, volcanoes, beaches, etc.), climates and ecosystems, each with its own characteristic flora and fauna. The impressive cone of Mount Teide (3,78 m), which rises up in the centre of the island, over the Caldera de Las Cañadas, is the highest point of the island and, indeed, of the whole of Spain. The City of La Laguna San Cristóbal de La Laguna, popularly known as La Laguna, is a city and municipality of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in the extreme northeast of Tenerife, which forms, along with the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the most important urban centre of the island. The foundation project of La Laguna, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 999, dates back to the 5th Century and served as a model for the new cities built in America after its colonization. Moreover, as a university city, La Laguna has always been regarded as the intellectual hub and the cultural capital of the Canary Islands.
