This newsletter is our 4-H family newsletter which communicates important dates, events, and happenings. Remember, our website is always a great place for information; check it out at: <http://erie.osu.edu> If you have questions or concerns related to the 4-H program throughout the year, please don t hesitate to contact us at the Extension Office. We re looking forward to a great year of 4-H in 2018! Go to: http://erie.osu.edu click on 4-H Youth Development, then Project Info & Fact Sheets Remember, these project fact sheets include: information for project completion, judging dates and times, exhibit requirements, project check-in times and project check-out times 4-H Enrollment Deadline is April 2, 2018 (After April 2 nd but on or before May 1 st, $25 late fee in addition to $6 activity fee)

Parents: Key Leader Positions Available Are you a parent who wants to be a bit more involved with 4-H? Consider becoming a Key Leader. A Key Leader is a person who is knowledgeable in a specific project area and answers questions (usually a phone call) 4-H members may have about that project. Key Leaders are also asked to help set up the 4-H Youth Building prior to fair and assist during judgings and project check-in. Please contact the Extension Office if you are interested in volunteering with the 4-H program in the following areas: Welding, ATV, Horseless Horse, Vet Science, Robotics, Models & Rockets, and Self-determined. 4-H Activity Fee Reminder 4-H members (including Cloverbuds) are required to pay a $6.00 activity fee. Some clubs may ask members to pay this fee out of pocket and simply add it to existing club dues while other clubs may vote to pay this fee for their members from the club treasury. Club members should not bring individual payment to the Extension Office, but instead should pay their club treasurer, who will write one check to the Extension Office. Funds generated from this will help our office cover costs associated with various 4-H activities, such as camp, volunteer training, 4-H marketing, membership insurance, etc. DEADLINE DATE FOR 2018 ENROLLMENT Each club s enrollment is due in our office by 4:30pm on Monday April, 2nd. It is your responsibility to attend 4-H club meetings, choose your projects and return your enrollment information and fee to your advisor so they can submit it to the Extension Office by the April 2nd deadline. If you are unable to reach your advisor, you must contact the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. April 2nd to make enrollment!! Those who wish to enroll after the April 2 nd deadline (and compete in judgings and the Erie County Fair) can register until May 1 st but must pay a $25 late fee in addition to the $6 activity fee. Keep in mind; youth can join 4-H at any point throughout the year. The enrollment deadline is for fair participation. New & Discontinued Projects Please see page 2 of your Family Guide for the 2018 project revisions. If you haven t gotten a copy of the Family Guide yet, it is accessible online at erie.osu.edu. Click on 4-H Youth Development, and then click on Project Info & Factsheets. Erie County 4-H on Facebook Erie County 4-H has a Facebook page! We use our FB page to post information, announce event changes, and send messages or reminders. Join Facebook and search for Erie County 4-H. 4-H Camp on Kelleys Island Camp registration forms will be mailed to all eligible 2018 4-H youth around the 3 rd week of April. At this time, registration forms will also be available online. 4-H members will have priority registration through Monday, April 30 tj. Erie County 4-H Camp is Friday, June 8 through Monday, June 11.

Quality Assurance Training Every exhibitor of a market, dairy, or breeding animal MUST attend a Quality Assurance program with his/her parent or legal guardian to be eligible to bring the animal(s) to fair to exhibit, show, or sell. There are no exceptions. NEW in 2018: Youth must attend Quality Assurance at least 45 days prior to exhibition. Therefore, youth will no longer have the option of traveling to another county s Quality Assurance program a few weeks before the Erie County Fair to meet their QA requirement. Quality Assurance Programs will be offered again this year at the club level utilizing approved resource persons. Two county-wide programs will also be available this year. A Quality Assurance Program will be held at the 4-H Super Sunday Program on Sunday, April 22 nd at Margaretta Elementary. There will be one make-up session for anyone who missed the Super Sunday Quality Assurance program and their club program. It will be held on Wednesday, June 20 th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the Erie County Fairgrounds. This is a list of QA resource people who have been trained to teach the program: Mary Beth Albright 419-627-7631 Jodee Gennari 419-684-9045 Brett Kneeskern 419-684-5351 Kevin Kremer 419-684-5351 Doug Paule 419-202-6753 Carolyn Sayler 440-965-4112 Bruce Thayer 419-588-2109 Again this year, Junior Fair exhibitors ages 15 to 18 (4-H age) will be given the opportunity to test-out of the annual quality assurance program. Here is how the test-out option works: Youth can choose to take one of two tests: a large animal version (beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and goats) OR small animal version (rabbits and poultry). Youth have only once chance to take the exam each year. If they do not pass, they must attend a QA session for the current year with a parent or guardian. Tests can be taken at the Extension Office during normal business hours - Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. (office staff LEAVE at 4:30 p.m., so you must be finished taking the test by 4:30 p.m.). Tests can be taken from March 15 th to April 15 th. Please call in advance. If a youth passes the test, they are exempt from annual QA recertification for the remainder of their Junior fair career. Youth must receive a 70% or higher to pass the test. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions.
