STELLAR Language Learning Shared Book Approach (SBA) Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA) 9
Shared Book Approach (SBA) The teacher uses a Big Book in class to engage children and model reading aloud. Through questioning techniques, the teacher will get the children to respond to the books while also teaching grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and concepts of print. 10
The teacher organises a learning experience for the children. Modified Language Experience For example, she might have the class make sandwiches for a character in a story they have read together. This experience will act as a springboard for writing. Approach (MLEA) The teacher models writing using children s language. Children engage in writing together and in writing independently. 11
STELLAR is different because Classroom environment is: focused on children s interaction rather than on teacher talk filled with various reading materials for children s use
STELLAR is different because English language learning is achieved through: vocabulary learned in books expression of thoughts in oral and written forms discussions with other children and the teacher informal peer interaction
