FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING PROGRAM ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM Fort Hays State University is the only university in Kansas which offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Diagnostic Imaging. The Medical Diagnostic Imaging Program is designed to provide radiologic technologists with competency in additional modalities. Many clinics and hospitals are seeking individuals with experience in more than on specialty area. The Medical Diagnostic Imaging (MDI) coursework will allow the student to increase their knowledge and skills in these specialty areas and expand their job opportunities. The following specialty modality areas are offered within the Medical Diagnostic Imaging major: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography (M), Cardiovascular Interventional Technology (CVIT), Bone Densitometry (BD), Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), and Quality Management (QM). As a student and as a technologist, you will be working very closely with physicians and other care providers. The MDI courses will emphasize a thorough understanding of patient care, system operation during routine and emergency imaging situation, image quality, and clinical experience. In all of the program courses, student enrollment is limited to ensure quality hands-on experience for each student and to encourage interaction between student and faculty. Students are admitted to the program through an application process and a selection committee. We encourage you to contact a member of the MDI faculty for additional information to familiarize yourself with the various modalities offered through the MDI Program. CURRICULUM Upon admission to the MDI Program, each student will work cooperatively with their advisor to develop a course of study tailored to individual interests. Students may also elect to complete a modality Preceptorship at an affiliate hospital or clinic to gain clinical experience. Upon completion of specific requirements, students may be eligible to sit for national examinations in the various specialty modality areas offered in the MDI Program. FACILITIES On campus, the Program has ultrasound and mammography equipment for students to gain hands-on experience. Students also have the opportunity to gain practical experience in CT, MRI, CVIT, mammography, PACS, and radiology leadership and management at affiliated sites. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Students enrolled in the program are encouraged to participate in an organization relating to their area of interest. Society activities may include meetings, student competition events, registry preparation seminars, fundraising events, and social gatherings. CAREERS Employment for you is abundant throughout our region and starting salaries are quite good. Competence and skill in more than one diagnostic imaging modality will enable you to pursue a wider variety of jobs and compete for higher salaries. Most of our graduates are employed to staff diagnostic imaging departments in hospitals, but you may seek employment in clinics, physician s offices, mobile diagnostic imaging units and industrial healthcare facilities. ELIGIBILITY FOR THE PROGRAM Students must be in good academic standing in an accredited Radiologic Technology Program to be considered eligible for the Medical Diagnostic Imaging Program. To be considered academically qualified, all prerequisite course requirements must be completed with a minimum grade point average of 2.75. Students may simultaneously complete the Associate of Science Degree in Radiologic Technology if admitted to both programs. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE In addition to general scholarships available, there are also scholarships offered to outstanding medical diagnostic imaging students. The forms for financial assistance are available through the office of Student Fiscal Services. B.S. IN MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Students are required to complete the prerequisite courses with a minimum grade point average of 2.75 before they will be eligible for the elective courses. The student will be allowed to enroll in one more MDI major course, and must earn a grade of C or above in order to be removed from probationary status. Due to scheduling conflicts, the student will not be required to enroll in the course they did not pass, but they must obtain permission from the instructor before enrolling in a course. If the student is unable to pass the probationary course, they will be removed from the Program.
