Parent Handbook (2018-19) Parenting is essentially an art of Loving, Caring & Guiding Atmiya Vidya Mandir International Residential School for Boys Dedicated to the Divinity in every child 1

2

Dear Parents, Namaste and Jay Swaminarayan, Welcome to Atmiya Vidya Mandir in the new school year 2018-19. Each new term brings renewed excitement and opportunities for learning and growth for students, faculty and staff. Every child is innately gifted special talents. Our mission at AVM is to continually provide the best environment where these talents are nurtured. We are committed to providing the best possible education for your son and creating a safe and healthy surrounding for each child making AVM truly a home away from home. In line with our commitment, this handbook shall provide you with important school related information and guidelines that we expect every parent to follow to assist the school to ultimately help your child excel. We thank you for entrusting us to nurture your child into a good human being and providing us such a tremendous opportunity to serve, love, and watch in awe these ignited minds growing into leaders of tomorrow. Dr. Vijay Patel Principal 3

Atmiya Vidya Mandir The concept of "Atmiyata" was first uniquely coined by His Divine Holiness Hariprasad Swamiji who is the Founder-President of Yogi Divine Society. The core philosophy of "Union of body, mind and soul" that forms the base of Atmiya Vidya Mandir is inspired and blessed by Param Pujya Swamiji. While an excellent education is essential, in the long term, quality of life is driven by one s inner-self for which a strong foundation of culture and spirituality is crucially important. The varied activities undertaken by the school thus have their roots in the timeless principles of knowledge and wisdom. Our efforts at AVM are driven by our founder Param Pujya Swamishree s vision: 'dedicated to the divinity in every child'. Atmiya Vidya Mandir is committed to the cause of promoting cultural and all round education and sound moral values. We encourage a scientific temperament, develop the overall personality of our students and help students realize their full potential. The focus of education in the school is the foundation of a strong 4

character and empowerment for life. To achieve this goal, the school lays stress on developing in our students, a sense of service towards their parents, good habits, behaviour, discipline, courtesy, honesty, national pride and unity, confidence and a cooperative spirit. We require and expect parents' role and guidance at all times along with your cooperation in matters related to your child's development into a progressive, balanced, morally strong and effective individual in and outside the school. Reading through the information given here will ease your interaction with school. Your cooperation in observing the school rules will be highly appreciated. 5

Leave Policy The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) expects the school to have a minimum of 180 days for teaching to complete the prescribed syllabus in entirety. Students of Atmiya Vidya Mandir get 11 to 12 weeks of vacation in a calendar year. Being a residential school, we consider parents to be an integral part of our extended family - our Atmiya Parivaar. We do our best to facilitate leave requests while balancing our academic responsibility. To fulfil the latter, we do require students to make up for the lost instruction time during sports and scheduled free time. Please read the following details of the leave policy carefully. 1. Unconditional leaves are granted for medical reasons and for marriage or death in the child's immediate family only. 2. For any other reason, conditional leave may be granted at the discretion of the Principal. School regulations limit the number of vacation days particularly for secondary and senior secondary classes. While we agree that you and your child have social obligations, your child's education is our foremost concern and responsibility. In order to minimize the impact of lost instruction time on your child's overall education, conditional leaves may be granted with the following clauses: a. Your child will need time to complete missed school work. This will be done during the sports and free time. Considering a day of 11

instruction is between 4 to 5 hours, your child may have to miss up to 3 days of sports for each missed instruction day. b. Graded homework and unit tests are part of your child's evaluation and count towards his final grade. The school will not provide grades for missed homework or schedule a retest for absences during unit tests. c. Conditional leaves cannot be sanctioned during the months of examinations. Ultimately the parent should be the best judge in balancing the social and educational needs of the child. Please consider the above mentioned points while applying for conditional leaves. For any queries please send an email to leaves@avm.edu.in 1. All leave applications have to be either sent by e-mail to leaves@avm.edu.in or by post. The leave decision will be conveyed at the earliest opportunity. 2. You are provided one leave for birthday during an academic year. You will be able to take your child out on any Saturday after 2.00 pm during his birthday week and it will be your responsibility to drop him the next day i.e. Sunday before 4.00 pm. 3. Absence without intimation for a week or more will be deemed as withdrawal from the school. Re-admission will solely be at the discretion of the admission committee. 4. Doctor's certificate will be required for students returning late due to illnesses. 12

5. All the parents are requested to drop their ward before 5:00 pm on campus on the day their approved leave ends. 6. If a student returns late after an approved leave or holidays, a fine of Rs. 1000/- will be imposed per day as late fee. Note: To complete pending work, he will inevitably have to miss his sports or free time until he finishes this work. 7. Medical leaves for routine check-up will not be granted on weekends. All doctor s visits must be scheduled during the afternoon of working days (Monday to Friday). Child should return to school by the evening of the same day. Under no circumstances the child will be allowed to stay overnight at home. 13

Phone Calls Parents/guardians can call as per the following schedule. Please note that these mobile numbers will be available only on the phone call schedules of students. Std 1 to 6 parents are requested to avoid calling during the very first month i.e. till 15 th July 2018. Std 7 to 12 parents are requested to avoid calling during the very first month i.e. till 9 th July 2018. This will help your child to get settled in the school and the hostel environment.
