SEWANHAKA CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT OUR COMMUNITY NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK 2015-2016 AN OVERVIEW Established in 1926, the Sewanhaka Central High School District comprises the four suburban communities lying just east of the border between New York City and Nassau County, Long Island. Elmont and Franklin Square are located in the Town of Hempstead; Floral Park - Bellerose and New Hyde Park - Garden City Park are located in the Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. Roughly 135,000 people live within District boundaries. Though the income range is varied, residents are primarily homeowners who share a fierce pride in the quality of their individual schools. Nassau County, particularly in its longer established suburbs such as those that Sewanhaka serves, affords an interesting balance to New York City. Our residents have the advantage of easy access to New York's educational and cultural offerings, in addition to the experiences enjoyed in a suburban setting. OUR SCHOOLS The Sewanhaka Central High School District, covering some thirty-nine square miles, operates five junior/senior high schools - enrolling over 8,500 students in grades 7 through 12. The five schools include: Elmont Memorial High School, Floral Park Memorial High School, H. Frank Carey High School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School. The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education consists of eight members, two from each of the four component districts. The Board of Education meets once monthly to discuss concerns unique to the Sewanhaka Central High School District. OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM The instructional program places an emphasis on meeting the rigorous requirements of New York State and is supplemented by numerous enrichment courses and programs. Our students accumulate an average of 25 credits upon graduation. The district s 2015 graduation rate was 96%, with 97% of our students earning a New York State Regents Diploma. The Advanced Placement program in our five senior high schools has grown in scope and student participation through the years. Each school offers between 13-16 different AP courses yearly. Approximately 72% of district AP exams scored received a passing score of 3, 4, or 5. The District has been famous for over 80 years, not only for its academic excellence, but also for its innovative offerings in the fields of technical and vocational education. Additionally, numerous athletic and extracurricular programs continue to receive regional and national acclaim.
